1 Shrine Herald January 27, 2013 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Catholic Schools Week There are 132,656 private and public schools in the United States, according to Department of Education statistics. Of those, 6,980 are Catholic elementary or secondary schools. What sets these Catholic schools apart from the pack? Three things, say educators, parents and community leaders: faith, academics and service. Children are taught faith not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, January 27 to February 2. Shrine Catholic Schools will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses and activities for students, families, parishioners and the community at large. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2013 is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards." Catholic schools are noted for their academic excellence and high moral standards. This year's theme celebrates the constant attention Catholic educators pay to increasing the learning and growth in faith of all students. The theme follows on the launch of a new initiative, the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, to ensure consistent high standards at Catholic schools across the country. Catholic educators are also participating in a nationwide education initiative for all schools called the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative. continued on page 3...

5 January 27, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "...And as we cannot become more one with Christ in this life than by uniting ourselves to Him in the Eucharist, so we can have no greater assurance of living according to His Spirit, of being directed and taught by Him, than by uniting ourselves to the Church and following her directives." "To be a 'Child of the Church' is the most glorious title for a Christian and second only to that of 'Child of God.' These two titles can never be separated one depends upon the other; for, as St. Cyprian has said, 'He who does not have the Church for a Mother, cannot have God for a Father.' Jesus wishes to save and sanctify us, but He wishes to do it by means of the Church. He gave His life and shed His Blood for us; He put His most precious merits at our disposal; He gave us the Holy Eucharist and left us the heritage of His doctrine, but He wished the Church to be the sole depository and dispenser of these inestimable benefits, so that all who wish to enjoy them must have recourse to her. Let us go, then, to the Church with the complete confidence of children, certain to find Jesus in her, Jesus who sanctifies, nourishes, teaches, rules, and directs us by means of His representatives....'we can think of nothing more glorious, more noble, and more honorable than membership in the Holy Roman Catholic Church, by which we become members of such a holy Body (the Mystical Body of Christ), are guided by one and so sublime a Head (Jesus Christ), are filled with one divine Spirit (the Holy Spirit), and finally, are nourished in this earthly exile with one doctrine and the one same heavenly Bread until we are permitted to share the one eternal beatitude in heaven." - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Monday, 8 am, 6 pm; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 10 am; Wednesday, 4 pm; Friday, 11 am and Noon. Captains and Divisional Leaders, make sure you have picked up your revised schedules of adorers. They are available in the vestibule of the chapel. I appreciate those individuals who have donated plants to the chapel; however, please get permission from John Faris or Marie Lama before bringing them to the chapel. Some have done that while others have not. I don't want the chapel to get too crowded with plants. Thank you and God bless you! Thank you for all the recent donations of items for the bookshelves and the "freebie/evangelization" basket!!!! The items are much appreciated and go quickly! Thank you! Life Matters Pro-choice advocates will argue that a developing baby in its earliest stages is just a clump of tissue. Yet, no one can deny that the clump of tissue is a human being; just in it s earliest stages. It s a fact proven by science, not something that can be argued. The clump of tissue will not develop into a cat, frog or duck. It can only develop into a human being. Therefore, since no one can argue that there is a human being developing in the womb, then the real argument has to be whether it is a human person who should be protected under the law. Who makes that decision? Based on what criteria? Using current laws as the guide, it seems to be based on whether the person is convenient and wanted. Their worth to someone else defines their worth as a human person. That may sound harsh, but that s what our culture is saying through our laws. Consider this, if someone can create a law to arbitrarily say when you become a human person, can t someone make a law to say when you stop becoming a human person? These laws may impact your mother, father or yourself one day. Isn t it our responsibility as soldiers for Christ to show the world another way HIS WAY where all human beings, regardless of their condition, have dignity as a person and deserve our protection, simply because they are God s children. 7 January 27, 2013 Page 7 Lending Library During this "Year of Faith", Pope Benedict has recommended that people read the lives of the saints to strengthen their own faith. The author, Louis de Wohl, has written a series of novels about some of the most beloved saints, faithful to the historic facts and living situations at their times, while also providing the enjoyment of novels. With this as background, you may then have your interest peaked to go ahead and read some of their own more scholarly works, with a better understanding of them. We have his books about: St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Joan of Arc, St. Francis Xavier, St. Ignatius, St. Helena and her son, Constantine. 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Religious Formation Family Activities Kids have Gifts and Talents too! It has now been one year since we started our Children s Offertory. The envelopes distributed at that time allows children to fill in their TIME, TALENT and/or TREASURE they would like to offer during Mass. The focus of this is not to raise money for the parish, but for the children to learn that they too have valuable gifts of time and talent to share. The envelopes are accepted at any of the Masses and may be placed in the baskets that are passed around. Also, during the Sunday 9:00 am Mass, a basket is placed on the altar steps for those children who wish to bring their offerings forward. If you would like a box of children s envelopes for your child, please contact Janie Lynch at jlynch@shrinechurch.com or Preschool Religious Formation Thank you, Fr. Anthony! For the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 13, Fr. Anthony visited the preschool religious formation class. He explained the Sacrament of Baptism with the help of preschool-aged parents, Godparents and a baby doll. We should all take time to reflect on how wonderful it is to become a child of God, baptized into His Church! Due to the generosity (and big popcorn appetites!) of the religious formation kids and the grade school kids, we will be sending a check for $ to the Fishermen s Fund! We especially want to thank our volunteer popcorn poppers who worked very hard to make sure we had enough popcorn for the big crowds: Megan Clouse, Lisa Fulgenzi, Katie Hanselman, Randy Husaynu, Molly Kristopik-Hartner, Marguerite Lampertius, Lori Leonard, Jen Losey, Angela Owens, Annmarie Proctor, Jill Szlezyngier, and Mary Lynn Williams. We went through about 55 pounds of popcorn kernels! Confirmation Due to a scheduling conflict, the date of the Parent Evening of Formation (originally scheduled for January 15) has changed!! The new date is Tuesday, February 12, 7-8:15 pm in the High School Student Center Parents who did not attend the November Evening of Formation or the speakers on Teen Depression and Suicide ARE REQUIRED to attend on February 12. In His love, Mike Reece, reece@shrineschools.com, mreece@shrinechurch.com Elementary Religious Formation and Sacramental Preparation Popcorn for Priests Thank You! In recognition of National Vocations Awareness week, Religious Formation sold popcorn to raise money for the Fishermen s Fund a scholarship initiative set up to insure that vocations to the priesthood, diaconate or lay ministry are not hindered due to financial need. These crosses travel to several churches in our area during the Spring and Summer. The Knights need families to help them clean these crosses. Each family that volunteers will be given 50 crosses to clean at home (families have the option of cleaning 100 as two service projects). The cleaning could be done at any time that is convenient to your schedule, but must be dropped off on the drop off date. High School Youth Ministry Vocations of Marriage and Single Celibate Sunday, January 27, 7:30 to 9 pm At our last C.R.E.W. night we talked about vocations and were unable to talk about Marriage and life as a celibate single as vocations because of time restrictions. These other two vocations are usually passed over since we figure that they are pretty self explanatory. Tonight we will take time to really discuss and learn more about these vocations that are not as easy a decision as they seem. We will be role playing and discussing the importance of these other two very important vocations. Rainbow Saturday, February 2 through Sunday, February 3 Our teens will be joining parishes from throughout the Archdiocese at Rainbow 31 for a weekend of faith and fun! 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Congratulations are in order for ten special students at Shrine Catholic Grade School. All fourth, fifth, and sixth graders have been working diligently for weeks preparing for the 2013 National Geographic Geography Bee. Some have even joined the Geography Club to add to their knowledge of world geography. Each grade level competed independently and from those three grade levels, the following students earned preliminary finalist status: Luke Cerone, Soli Evans, Dennis Graveline, Cal Liggett, Joe Lynch, Teresa Nunez-Desmond, Olivia Palm, Ryan Suchyta, Isaiah Thummel, and Jake Vogelheim. They then competed against one another in the Final Round. It was a nail-biting competition with outstanding performances by all of the finalists. Teresa Nunez-Desmond earned third place and Ryan Suchyta earned second place. By correctly answering Chile to a question regarding Argentina and Tierra del Fuego, Isaiah Thummel won first place and earned the honor of representing SCGS moving on to the next level of competition. Thanks are also in order to the families and all our teachers (particularly Mrs. Gmeiner, Mrs. Gilmour, and Mrs. Hazen) who helped the students prepare for the competition. Year of Faith Unitatis Redintegratio (Decree on Ecumenism) Churches and Ecclesial Communities Separated from the Roman Apostolic See, par 24 It is the urgent wish of this Holy Council that the measures undertaken by the sons of the Catholic Church should develop in conjunction with those of our separated brethren so that no obstacle be put in the ways of divine Providence and no preconceived judgments impair the future inspirations of the Holy Spirit. The Council moreover professes its awareness that human powers and capacities cannot achieve this holy objective the reconciling of all Christians in the unity of the one and only Church of Christ. It is because of this that the Council rests all its hope on the prayer of Christ for the Church, on our Father's love for us, and on the power of the Holy Spirit. "And hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us" (Rom 5:5). Question: What do you think is the greatest obstacle to Christian unity? What steps could help us to overcome that obstacle? Prayer: Eternal Father, we praise you for sending your Son to be one of us and to save us. Look upon your people with mercy, for we are divided in so many ways, and give us the Spirit of Jesus to make us one in love. We ask this gift, loving Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 13 January 27, 2013 Page 13 Lenten Fish Bake Fish Bake is seeking new leadership for the 2014 Year. The present chair people have been in place for over five years and with that continuity the weekly process is well organized including checklists from start to finish. This is a popular parish wide event to which 100 volunteers sign up to eagerly serve each week. Presently, only 3 chair people are in place to manage and organize this group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers and 2 of these chair people are retiring at the end of the year. Our volunteer organizer/scheduler is staying so management of that crucial task will remain in capable hands. We are, however, seeking 1-2 volunteers to manage the inventory and supplies placing weekly orders with Gordons and Superior Fish for delivery to the school each of the 6 weeks. We are also seeking 2-3 volunteers to fill Rick Lee s position. Rick oversees the entire Friday process from start to finish in addition to running the ovens and managing the kitchen crew, but his position could be subdivided into smaller segments. If the idea of running the Fish Bake perks your interest, please contact Betty Tomezak at btomezak@sbcglobal.net or Rick Lee at rmmmlee@wowway.com with your questions or to receive more detailed job descriptions. Calling All Bakers Help make our Valentine Bake Sale a success by contributing home made treats. Please drop off baked goods Saturday, February 9, 3 to 6 pm or Sunday, February 10, 7:30 to 11 AM Thank You! Exciting Nicaragua Adventure We are planning a Mission Trip to Nicaragua in February Planning and information sessions began last May. As a result 27 juniors and seniors applied to join the team. However, we can only accommodate 12 students and four staff so the selection process was thoughtful and difficult since all of the applicants would have been good choices. At this time we would like to announce the members of the 2013 Nicaragua Mission Team. Congratulations: Victoria Armenio 14 Mr. James Mio Maddy Bernhard 13 Sr. Jeanne Gamache Erin Butler 14 Sr. Mary Ann Wyllie Stevie Erwin 14 Mr. Mark Butler Elliott Free 13 Michael Guirey 14 Rosie Konczal 13 Addison Mauck 14 Matt Nadai 13 Clare Romano 14 Marin Smith 14 Maddie York 14 The team will be commissioned from the parish on Sunday, February 10 at the 9:00 am Mass. Please join us and wish them well.

"A recent study found significant interest among nevermarried Catholics ages in priesthood and the consecrated life," he said. "We estimate that over 600,000 youth and young adults have seriously considered a religious vocation in the Church. This is good news. The challenge is to pray for them and encourage them to take the next step as they discern God's call." On February 23, 2013, Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will conduct a Day of Discernment for men aged who are considering the priesthood. From 1:00 until 7:00 pm. Archbishop Vigneron will lead the men in prayer, reflection, instruction, discussion and fellowship regarding how to properly discern God s call to the Roman Catholic Priesthood. Please encourage someone you know to take the next step. Contact Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations for more information: or visit the website at:
