1 Shrine Herald August 22, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Dream Cruise As I write, we are ramping up for the Cruise. As you read this, we are probably in the midst of it or looking at the aftermath. I do want to thank the literally hundreds of volunteers who help in so many different ways during this event. On behalf of the entire parish community, I want to thank the Sobeck family for their generosity. When we all work together, we can accomplish so much. It is great being part of such an active and generous community. School and Religious Education As soon as Dream Cruise comes around, I know that School and Religious Education classes are just around the corner. Already this week there will be a retreat for some of the staff. Things are ramping up for another great year. Remember to keep September 13 open in the evening for a very special event to mark the beginning of the Catholic Culture initiative in our parish. We look forward to everyone attending. It will be a great start for the beginning of another year in the schools of Shrine, the Religious Formation Programs, the Athletic Programs, RCIA, adult formation, service, and our very existence. Plan on attending. Parish Records At the direction of the Archdiocese, we have switched over to a new computer program to manage our parish census and records. The beauty of this is that there will be a standardized system for all parishes. Priests moving from one parish to another will not have to learn a new system every time they move. Parish members moving from one parish to another can have their records follow them. Hopefully it will help to We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time eliminate multiple registrations and help to keep records more up to date and useful. As with everything, there is also a little bit of a downside. Priests and staff must learn the new system. We are also looking at a general mail in, on line, and/or in the pew update to our records. Your help in responding when the time comes will be critical to the success of the project. Thank you in advance. Saint Thérèse Statue Some time ago, the Rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary, The Very Reverend Jeffrey Monforton, began a project to have a hand carved wooden statue of Saint continued on page 3...

This is most fitting, considering her love for priests and those responding to the call of priesthood. We here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower along with the parish of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux in Shelby Township have responded to the Rector s request to help make this happen. It is most appropriate for her image to be in the chapel of the seminary, and equally appropriate that we should have a part in it. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak Rosie was most appreciative to Kodi s trainer. In her thank you card, Rosie said, Thank you for making my brother a little more BEAR-ABLE. I most like the commands leave it, and ignore. She signed it with her paw print. Kodi is home for awhile, but I am convinced that training is a life long project. 5 August 22, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Our Lord wills to communicate Himself to your soul, to give Himself entirely; He wills to come and live with you: ' If any man shall hear My voice and open to Me the door, I will come into him and will sup with him and he with Me'. Oh! May you not lose this immense gift through your own fault, your own negligence!" "How long has Our Lord, the divine Sun, let the luminous ray of His grace shine upon your soul; how long has He knocked at your door: 'Behold, I stand at the gate and knock.' Each confession, each Holy Communion, each Mass, each occasion for the exercise of virtue, each inspiration, each command or request of obedience: are not these God, knocking repeatedly at the door of your heart? And what are you doing? Why do you still keep Him waiting? Wake from your torpor, open your soul!...do not be satisfied with opening the door half-way, or even three-quarters; open it completely. It is necessary to life up the gates, to remove every obstacle: your God must enter in." - Divine Intimacy Open Holy Hours: Sunday, 4 am, 9 am, and 10 pm; Monday, 1am, 5 am,; Tuesday, 12 am; Thursday, 11 am, noon, and 2 pm; Saturday, 4 pm. On her birthday, ask for her intercession that our country may grow in a deeper understanding of God s presence in each human being and that we may all have the courage to stand up and defend it. Here are some quotes from Mother Teresa to reflect on: "It is a poverty that a child must die so that you may live as you wish. The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted. "I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself." "We must remember that life begins at home and we must also remember that the future of humanity passes through the family." "Once that living love is destroyed by contraception, abortion follows very easily." Crisis Pregnancy? Mother and Unborn Baby Care can help! Call Hurting from an abortion experience? The recent collection brought in more than 55 backpacks most filled with school supplies and bags and bags of more paper, pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, etc. The National Shrine Knights of Columbus Council #12408 has delivered these items to Sr. Peggy Devaney, IHM, for the children that are helped by the Oakland County Criminal Justice Ministry. Thanks to your donations and caring, the families reached by Sr. Peggy and her volunteers will have one less worry as the school year begins for their children. May God bless you all! Just a reminder, please notify us when you have additions to the Military prayer list, or when one of our Military members can be taken off the prayer list. Thank you!

7 August 22, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library S e v e n S e c u l a r Challenges Facing 21st Century Catholics by Val Peter is "an upbeat book about a very important topic. Many of us enjoy the hustle and bustle of postmodern life: the medical advances that help us stay healthy, the communications revolution that includes the Internet, cell phones, the ipod, and so much more... However, at the same time one may be uncritical and unaware of some harmful elements... that may pose a threat to our spiritual lives. " (pp. v- vii) Those included are: diminished respect for authority; uncritical openness; cynicism; embracing an ideology; learned helplessness; anti-intellectualism; and political correctness. (Section 7, Current Issues) Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 9 August 22, 2010 Page 9 Healing Service Emmanuel Healing Ministry invites you to come to a Healing Service on Monday, August 30 at the National Shrine of the Little Flower from 7 to 9 pm. It will consist of a Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick followed by the opportunity to be prayed over by any one of the several Healing Prayer Teams for any intention. Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM, will preside at the Mass. Confessions will be available before Mass starting at 6:30 pm. For more information contact: Margaret Williams What does being prayed over mean? Unlike the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick which is for the Catholic faithful, anyone can be prayed over. It means that you share your intention with the two partners of each Healing Prayer Team and they spend a few minutes praying for personal intention physical healing, healing of relationships, finding a job, growing in confidence to cope with life s challenges, knowing God loves you, etc. Jesus taught us that the sick upon whom they lay their hands will recover (Mk. 16:18) and how much more [than us humans] will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Lk. 11:13). Praying over people imparts the gentle healing of the Holy Spirit for any area of our life where He is needed. Humanae Vitae is perhaps the most contentious and well-known papal intervention in the history of the Church. Promulgated at the height of the sexual revolution in the western world, Humanea Vitae reiterated the constant teaching of the Church on the duty of married persons to responsibly transmit human life and the incompatibility of contraception with that duty. Humanae Vitae spawned an explosion in theological discourse in defense of its teaching. This 10-week discussion and study group is part of the ENDOW (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women) series. Cost for the class is $60, which includes all materials. The course will be facilitated by Linda Rathburn.
