1 Shrine Herald August 29, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Summer? What happened to Summer 2010? When school ended last June, I was so looking forward to some down time to just slow down the pace of things and relax a little. Somehow or another that never seemed to happen. First my work with the Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Detroit demanded attention that had been deferred because we were involved with graduations and the close of the school year. Second, there were two important working groups for the Archdiocese that I was asked to participate in that have met, and are continuing to meet, every week. This has resulted in the fact that two days every week are consumed in work for the Archdiocese. The change of two associate pastors, 50% of the priests in the house, has also had an effect on many aspects of the running of a parish this size. Questions of who does what, and who is responsible for what, which were taken for granted, had to be revisited, evaluated and assigned. Gradually we are beginning to discern how and where the talents of the new members of the Pastoral Team can best serve the needs of the community. At the same time it is necessary to keep in balance what is best for the individual team member regarding their continuing formation and their future ministry. Here we are, a little past the middle of August and school has already begun with orientation days, programs are gearing up for the fall, and parish life continues as we continue our pilgrimage to the Kingdom of God. So where has the summer of 2010 gone? It has been a time of intense strategic planning and preparation for the year to come. It has been a very busy time and a We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time very fruitful time. It is a time well spent in the investment of the future of the Church of Detroit and the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Basilica With a suggestion to Archbishop Vigneron, the petition to the Holy Father and the Vatican to have the church of the National Shrine of the Little Flower designated as a Basilica has been endorsed. A Basilica is a church honored by the Holy Father because of unique architectural style and adherence to the norms of the Church regarding sacred liturgy. continued on page 3...

Victims of Discrimination, Hunger and Forced Emigration Missionary: That the Church may be a home for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger, or wars forcing them to emigrate to other countries.

3 August 29, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... The process for this to take place involves a formal petition that documents all of the requirements set forth by the Vatican. This petition is then endorsed by the local bishop. It must then receive an endorsement from the national conference of bishops stating that there are no serious obstacles to the petition. Finally it must go to the Vatican for approval. With the Archbishop s approval, the process has begun. The honors journalism class of Shrine Catholic High School will take the lead in preparing the petition and then follow through with the necessary media promotion and celebration involved in such a designation. This is a great opportunity for the students involved in this project. It allows them to be personally and actively involved in a multimedia event of historic proportions. It is also a great honor and a historic event for the entire parish. Rosie, Carlito & Kodi Rosie and Kodiak are getting along very well. Kodi is responding very well to classes and has acquired many good skills and habits. Both Rosie and Carlito are impressed with his progress. Rosie has decided that it is time for him to learn how to observe the discipline of Lent and how to pray. Well, we have until Ash Wednesday to teach him these things. 5 August 29, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "If you are nothing, you must not forget that Jesus is All...think only of this uniquely lovable All." - St. Thérèse of Lisieux "We should remember that we can practice humility of heart, even when we are not able to perform special exterior acts of humility, even when no one humiliates us and we are, on the contrary, the object of confidence, esteem, and praise. St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus said in like circumstances: 'The remembrance of my weakness is so constantly present to me that there is no room for vanity.'...we must humble ourselves within, the more we are praised by others. If humility of heart is practiced in this way, it will give us such a low opinion of ourselves to anyone; we will consider others better and more worthy of esteem, respect, and consideration that we are. Thus we will be in peace, undisturbed by the desire to be better than others, undisturbed by the humiliations which may come to us. - Divine Intimacy Open hours: Sunday, 9 am and 10 pm; Monday, 1 am, 5 am; Tuesday, 12 am; Thursday, 11 am, noon, and 2 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 5, 6, pm; Monday 5 and 10 am; Thursday, 10 and 11 am, 2 pm; Friday, 9,11 am ; the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7pm hour on Sunday. Call Marie Lama at if you are interested in a Holy Hour or are interested in subbing. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! Healing Service Emmanuel Healing Ministry invites you to come to a Healing Service on Monday, August 30 at the National Shrine of the Little Flower from 7 to 9 pm. It will consist of a Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick followed by the opportunity to be prayed over by any one of the several Healing Prayer Teams for any intention. Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM, will preside at the Mass. Confessions will be available before Mass starting at 6:30 pm. For more information contact: Margaret Williams What does being prayed over mean? Unlike the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick which is for the Catholic faithful, anyone can be prayed over. It means that you share your intention with the two partners of each Healing Prayer Team and they spend a few minutes praying for personal intention physical healing, healing of relationships, finding a job, growing in confidence to cope with life s challenges, knowing God loves you, etc. Jesus taught us that the sick upon whom they lay their hands will recover (Mk. 16:18) and how much more [than us humans] will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Lk. 11:13). Praying over people imparts the gentle healing of the Holy Spirit for any area of our life where He is needed. Unjust laws degrade human beings. King s willingness to go to jail, rather than comply with legal injustice, was exemplary and inspiring. Humanae Vitae is perhaps the most contentious and well-known papal intervention in the history of the Church. Promulgated at the height of the sexual revolution in the western world, Humanea Vitae reiterated the constant teaching of the Church on the duty of married persons to responsibly transmit human life and the incompatibility of contraception with that duty. Humanae Vitae spawned an explosion in theological discourse in defense of its teaching. This 10-week discussion and study group is part of the ENDOW (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women) series. Cost for the class is $60, which includes all materials. The course will be facilitated by Linda Rathburn. 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower A Family Perspective As in today s Gospel, Jesus often used a meal as the place to teach. Too often family meals are rushed, eaten in shifts or in the hypnotic glow of TV. Meals can be sacred times where we listen, share, appreciate and instruct one another.
