1 Shrine Herald June 6, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Corpus Christi This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In addition to the regular Masses, there will be a special Eucharistic Procession after the 6 pm Sunday Mass followed by all night Adoration of the Eucharist in the main church. Even if you did not have the opportunity to sign up previously, you are welcome to come at any time through the night. Adoration will be suspended during the 6:30 am Mass on Monday and end with Benediction prior to the 8:30 am Mass. The monstrance being used for the procession and adoration is one specially blessed by the Venerable John Paul II that is traveling through the United States in promotion of prayer for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. Priestly Vocation This past week, I attended the funeral of my classmate, Father Jerome Machlik. Jerry and I met in the sixth grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish on the east side of Detroit. We finished grade school together and then attended Sacred Heart Seminary High School and College and went on to study theology together at St. John s Provincial Seminary. Amazingly we spent 15 years in school together and then were ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Throughout those years of school and seminary life, we were a support to each other. In priesthood we each became more and more involved in our ministry and parishes. Father Jerry was the founding pastor of St. John Vianney Parish in Shelby Township in For more than 30 years when you count the development years before the actual foundation of the parish, he gave his heart and soul to the people We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Solemnity of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ and the parish. He will be missed by the parish family of St. John Vianney and by all of us who knew him. We need more good and dedicated pastors like Father Jerry. CSA Catholic Services Appeal With three weeks completed in this year s CSA, we are at 54% of our target, or about $107, with 382 contributors. I know I am part of that number. There are about 900 cards that were mailed out this past week and a number of cards that were picked up that are still outstanding. continued on page 3...

The purpose of the traveling monstrances was to encourage the faithful, parish by parish, prayer by prayer, to worldwide Eucharistic adoration for the intention of increased vocations to the priesthood and religious life. A Blessed Monstrance has returned to Detroit as part of the celebration of The Year For Priests. This image is one of the six Blessed Monstrances for vocations. It serves as a symbol of the connection between the Eucharist and priestly and religious vocations. Sacred Heart Major Seminary and The Fisherman's Fund originally hosted the Blessed Monstrance in 2008 in conjunction with the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. This year the National Shrine builds on that tradition with all night adoration beginning after the 6 pm Sunday Mass on June 6, the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin immediately following Mass with the Knights of Columbus Color Guard standing watch until 6:15 am on Monday, June 7. Mass will be as usual at 6:30 am with Benediction at 8:15 am before the 8:30 am Mass. Please join us for all night adoration to pray for vocations and to support our priests, seminarians, and all those who love and serve Our Lord, His Church, and each and every one of us. Archdiocese of Detroit 2010 Catholic Services Appeal donation cards can be returned to the Offices of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in a number of ways convenient to you: using the return envelope, you can mail your donor card back to the National Shrine; you can drop the card off at the administrative reception desk in Heritage Hall, or you could drop it off in the collection basket at any of the weekend masses. The most important thing is to return your card. If you haven t picked up your card and you would still like to do so, you can pick the card up in Heritage Hall. No gift is considered too small, but the benefits you provide the National Shrine of the Little Flower through your contribution are tremendous. Your contribution helps maintain the health of the Parish we love and care about.

3 June 6, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Please return your card as quickly as possible. You may put it in the regular Sunday collection. You may drop it off at the parish office. You may send it back to us by U. S. Mail. PLEASE return it with your gift of pledge. Even if you are unable to support the CSA at this time, please indicate that on the card and return it to us. It helps us to keep our records up to date. Matters of Finance I would like to comment on the direction and leadership of our Archbishop, Allen Vigneron. He has taken bold and difficult steps in bringing financial stability to the Archdiocese of Detroit. The staff of the central services of the archdiocese has been cut by about 30% while still maintaining critically important services for the parishes and schools of the archdiocese. Limits on spending have been carefully imposed. Budgets and expenses are carefully monitored. He has asked me and others to serve on a working group to set procedures and policies to safeguard the financial position of the loan deposit program of the archdiocese. Steps are underway to recoup investments in the Pope John Paul II Center in Washington. All in all, Archbishop Vigneron is doing a tremendous job in strengthening the Church in Detroit fiscally. More importantly, he is giving us strong moral leadership and deeper appreciation for our Catholic Faith. He has my complete and total respect and support. He is deserving of your support as well. Keep him in your prayers. It is not an easy task which he has been given. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak Rosie finds summertime to be bitter sweet. It is sad since school is out and the kids are not around as much. It is sweet, because it means time at the lake to go swimming. Kodi has not yet learned to swim, and I don t think Rosie is going to teach him any time soon. Once she is in the water where Kodi s paws can no longer touch the ground, she is on her own to swim in peace. As soon as she comes out of the water, Kodi runs up next to her when she shakes off all the water. He shakes right along with her. I suspect he thinks it is some kind of ritual dance and he wants to join in. 5 June 6, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Jesus, my God, I adore Thee here present in the Sacrament of Thy love." "From His tabernacle Jesus looks out with infinite longing for the souls so dear to Him. And what does He see? A world of creatures who have no time for their God! Men have time to eat and to drink, they have time to talk and to laugh, they have time for business and amusement, but they have no time for their God. The theaters are crowded, the halls of pleasure ring with the laughter of their thoughtless thousands, and Jesus in His prison of loves sees the hours drag by in well-nigh unbroken solitude. What cruel ingratitude! But what of myself? Let me pause and reflect and resolve. Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore; oh make us love Thee more and more." - Fr. J. B. Moffatt, Thoughts on the Holy Eucharist There are 168 hours in a week. Are you willing to give one hour to our Lord - in thanksgiving, in reparation, and in petition? Roamin with Rosie Cruisin with Carlito (and Kodiak) Psst!! Carlito here! But be quiet. I snuck into Monsignor s office without Rosie knowing. I managed to con that little furbrain, Kodiak, to be my lookout while I take over the column. But he agreed only if I put his name on the top! Last week, Rosie asked about the fountain outside. The statue is none-other than St. Thérèse. Around the border of the garden are featured the Stations of the Cross. The building directly to the left of the garden is the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. 24 hours day, there is someone in there praying before the Blessed Sacrament. (Woof!) I just heard Kodiak give me the sign that Rosie s coming. But remember, if anyone asks, you like my column better. Oh darn! I forgot to talk about September 13. I guess I ll get to that next week. Shoot! Rosie just walked in the door. 7 June 6, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library Now that school is almost out, and you might want to check out a book that would be exciting, and also instructive for your young children. The Squire and the Scroll: A Tale of the Rewards of a Pure Heart is a wonderful book, with intriguing colored pictures of dragons and a young boy who shares an adventure with a knight. The story will hold their interest, and there is also a moral that the children will be able to recognize. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot).
