1 Shrine Herald February 26, 2012 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI First Sunday of Lent Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Lent 2012 Wednesday evenings during Lent a 7:00 pm Mass will be celebrated here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Immediately following Mass there will be a series of presentations on the Humble Servant. This Wednesday, February 29, the presentation will be made by Brother Richard Merling, director of the Father Solanus Guild. He will speak about Father Solanus Casey, The Porter of Saint Bonaventure's, his life and the cause for his canonization. Stations of the Cross will be held each Friday of Lent at 7:00 pm. A great Friday Lenten activity would be to come to the Fish Bake Dinner in the Grade School and then attend the Stations of the Cross. Together in Faith I hope that all of you have received the Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Vigneron regarding the future of the Church in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Please read it prayerfully and carefully. In the letter, the Archbishop calls us to continue to plan for the future of our parishes in light of the circumstances unique to each local situation. With such planning, we can address the realities facing us. We can look to the future, prepared to meet what serious challenges that inevitably arise in the life of our parish communities instead of reacting to crisis situations as they arise, or simply maintaining the status quo without looking forward. The Archbishop directs our attention to the mission of the Church to live the Gospel and to proclaim the Gospel to the world. All too often parishes become embroiled in maintenance or even survival mode. This prohibits us from carrying out our primary mission. Given the present situation with fewer people attending Sunday Mass, the economic downturn, fewer priests, and ever increasing expenses, it is clear that we as a Church must take measures to strengthen parishes so that we can be about the primary mission of the Catholic Church. Some of our neighboring parishes will be merged in the very near future. Our Lady of Fatima and St. James will become one parish. St. Justin and St. Mary Magdalene will become one parish. St. Dennis and St. Vincent Ferrer will become one parish. St. Alan and St. Columban will become one parish. continued on page 3...

SOCH Warming Center for the Homeless So many of you are doing what you can to help our two weeks of direct service in the overnight Warming Center. THANK YOU! To all of you who are coordinators, donors of food, supplies, meals, money, daily laundry and clean-up and a multitude of other things, may God reward your goodness! This is a perfect Lenten offering that involves prayer, fasting from rest, sleep, personal time, and other comforts, as well as almsgiving. For those who cannot help in other ways, we count on your prayers for this special ecumenical activity done along with the community of the Berkley Community Church to care for our area homeless brothers and sisters from March 4 through March 16. God bless you! Volunteers Needed for Southeast Oakland Warming Center for the Homeless Located in Berkley, MI Then they will answer and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? 3 February 26, 2012 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Parishes like ours will have to have a collaboration partner. In early 2012, National Shrine of the Little Flower, Guardian Angels, and St. Mary, Royal Oak are to identify collaboration partnerships to be submitted to the Regional Moderator no later than June 30, These should include plans for evaluating programs and determining areas for collaboration to be considered if the need emerges to implement a temporary cluster. In this way, the pastors and parishes will have already developed relationships, even though this would be a short term, temporary cluster in the event of an emergency vacancy of a pastorate. Our Parish Pastoral Council will begin working on establishing a collaboration partner. Rosie & Carlito Carlito looks forward to the conclusion of Evening Prayer around 5:30 pm each evening. After Evening Prayer Father Lang or Father Camilleri, and sometimes both of them, visit Carlito to make sure his food bowl is not empty and to make sure he has fresh water. He loves whistling along with them. Sometimes I am confused as to which one is most in tune. 5 February 26, 2012 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "O Jesus, I withdraw in spirit with You into the desert; teach me how to fight the triple concupiscence of the flesh, pride, and avarice." "Let us learn from Jesus how to conduct ourselves in temptations. Primarily, He teaches us to have great confidence in God....Those who will fully trust in God and who rely on His divine Providence, will not be easily enticed by the vain flattery of the devil, the world, or the flesh, because they know that only God can give true blessings and real happiness....if God permits us to be tempted, He does not permit us to be tempted beyond our strength, and, accompanying every temptation, there is always a special actual grace sufficient to overcome it. Therefore, instead of being disturbed by the violence of the struggle, let us use faithfully the grace God always gives and turn to Him in humble, confident prayer." - Divine Intimacy I want to take this opportunity to thank Rick Lowery and the ushers for their fine assistance when we had our Commitment Weekend for adoration. Know that we appreciate all the ushers do to assist us when we gather for Mass. Please call Marie Lama at if you can help with any of the following Holy Hours. Life Matters For over a year, Citizens for Pro-Life Society (CPLS) has been fighting along with Comfort Inn in Auburn Hills to prevent Planned Parenthood (PP) from building a mega-clinic on Opdyke Rd. On January 10, they lost a battle when Oakland County Judge James Alexander ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan. The Comfort Inn holds a deed restriction that limits the building purchased by PP to retail store, restaurant or office. The judge ruled that office may legally include medical office. Since PP, did not enter into the record what it actually intended to do with the building, the judge would not make a distinction between medical office and an outpatient surgical treatment center. The Comfort Inn Suites will take up this case on appeal. Things you can do: 40 Days for Life will be conducting a campaign outside of the PP office; join them if you can. CPLS will begin to speak with, and if need be, picket and initiate a boycott of Phoenix Construction Co. and the Hobbs and Black architectural firm both of which have been hired to build the interior of the PP clinic. Pray for the success of this strategy. Support CPLS with your prayers and your financial support. See Crisis Pregnancy? Mother and Unborn Baby Care can help! Call Hurting from an abortion experience? The flagstone sculpture depicts this teenage Saint writing her poems to the Lord as her words take flight as angels and rise to heaven. The angel s wings take shape as petals to form a rose, the symbol of love, beauty and this Saint s own miracles of leaving us flowers from heaven. This beautiful sculpture is (9 H x 5 W x 5 D) and comes in Flagstone only. We were able to purchase the last remaining sculptures at a reduced price. The former selling price of $40 is now just $15 and are available in the National Shrine Gift Shop. If you have any questions, please contact Jack Hoolehan at the Gift Shop on , ext. 418.

7 February 26, 2012 Page 7 Lending Library First Sunday of Lent! If you haven't yet planned any special spiritual reading for Lent, come over and look through the many available books. A collection of Catherine Daugherty's talks at the training center of Madonna House, in Combermere, Ontario, entitled, Season of Mercy, Lent and Easter, is one suggestion. In it she "leads us into the riches of God's boundless mercy as she teaches us the spirit, the liturgy and the customs of the Lent-Easter season. " She tells us, "We're in a fantastic world when we're in the world of Lent. We're in a world of repentance, of forgiveness. Now is the moment to repent of our own sins and to forgive everyone and everybody. Lent is a precious thing. A man went out and found a pearl of great price, and sold all that he possessed to buy it. Lent is one of those pearls." Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). Tonight we will explore the Catholic groups on many different campuses and how to stay involved in your faith. We will also talk about campus life and obstacles you will meet and how to live through college without losing your self. In Blessed John Paul II s On the Christian Meaning of Suffering (SalvificiDoloris) the late Pope explores the various ways we experience suffering, reflects on its origins and our quest for its meaning, and describes how it is only in Christ that we can hope to find any meaning or purpose in our experience of suffering. 17 February 26, 2012 Page 17 Holy Father s Prayer Intentions February 2012 General Intention: Access to Water. That all peoples may have access to water and other resources needed for daily life. Missionary Intention: Health Workers. That the Lord may sustain the efforts of health workers assisting the sick and elderly in the world's poorest regions. Vocations For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God (1 Peter 3:18). Is God calling you to the priesthood, to enter into His suffering, and by doing so bring others to God? If you think God is calling you to be a priest visit or contact Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations at birney.tim@aod.org or A Family Perspective Jesus went into the desert to put his life in perspective. This Lent, take a fresh look at a difficult relationship in your life. Concentrate on the positive things that person does, not just the negatives. Try to understand why their behaviors bug you. Can you honestly share your feelings with them without attacking them?
