Royal Oak, MI Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Catholic Services Appeal Recently we completed mailing over 4,000 CSA packets to Shrine Parishioners who didn t have the chance to pick theirs up in Heritage Hall in May. This was the earliest we ve sent these packages out in many years. Thank you to all of the volunteers helping with the mailing, particularly the Ladies Guild. Some parishioners may have received a second package in the mail after making their initial payment. I apologize for this crossing of mailings, but the time needed to prepare this large mailing made it impossible to avoid some duplication. Also note that by sending mail in this bulk form, we save the parish close to $1,500 in mailing costs. The number of parishioners returning their gift commitments because of this mailing has been encouraging in comparison to prior years. But please keep in mind also to-date, only 586 parish families out of over 4,000 Shrine Parish families have submitted a gift. I believe that as a Parish Community, we can improve on our participation percentage. All gifts regardless of size are joyfully and thankfully received. Please take a few minutes to reflect in prayer how you can help. Please return your card, even if you are unable to make a gift. It is the only way we can keep our mailing list up to date. If there is no response from a member over a three year period, we mark them as inactive. Fortnight for Religious Freedom In an article, First Amendment, Not About Pill, But Bill Of Rights By Peter Feuerherd the author states: It s not about the Pill. It s about the Bill (of Rights). He comments on the statements of Martin Nussbaum, a Colorado Springs-based attorney who works on religious liberty cases. While the arguments over the health care mandate have taken center stage, Nussbaum argues that the most intrusive act the administration has taken against religious liberty so far was its stance in the Hosanna Tabor case, in which a Lutheran Church was accused of continued on page 3... The Archdiocese and Monsignor Easton are permitting two Sisters from the country of Belarus to sell their icons and other handmade wares on the weekend of July These Sisters serve those with special physical and mental disabilities who have no other means of care or support. The Sisters will be in Heritage Hall after all the Masses on the last weekend of July. Two years ago they experienced great generosity from the Shrine parishioners, including hospitality from the Hoolehans. They do speak Engish and are very sweet. Now, we need someone (or a few "someones") who can help provide overnight hospitality for at least two nights? a lunch or evening meal? Transportation to or from another parish in our area? The case touched on who decides who is a minister in the church, and the Court said the government could not make that decision since it involved an internal church matter. The administration had argued against the ministerial exception, which grants churches the right to select their own teachers and ministers, though the courts have long recognized that the government has no right to interfere in that process. The significance of this is impossible to overstate, says Nussbaum. (The administration) took the view that government can supervise who your minister is. It can order you to reinstate that minister. However, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 9-0 vote, rejected the administration s argument. Both Justices Antonin Scalia and Elena Kagan former solicitor general in the Obama Administration expressed astonishment during oral arguments at the administration s view. Attacks on religious liberty can spring from disparate issues, says Nussbaum. For example, he cited an Alabama law opposed by Catholic and Protestant church leaders that would have caused ministers and volunteers to risk imprisonment if they were found transporting and assisting undocumented immigrants. That would have made Good Samaritan work illegal, says Nussbaum, noting that the state of Alabama eventually backed away from that provision in the law. In New York City, religious groups have been banned from using vacant public school buildings on weekends for worship services, again a blatant violation of religious liberty, says Nussbaum. At the center of the issue is the question of who defines the Church and the mission of the Church. It is similar to the situation faced by Saint Thomas More. A member of the parish ed me the following and I pass it along to you. Monsignor, The English parliament had passed an act making Henry VIII head of the church in England. Placed on trial for treason because he would not publicly declare acceptance of the act, Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, was asked why he had refused. His reply was simple and direct. Parliament hath not the competence to make anyone head of the church. We stand on the same solid ground as Sir Thomas. We may suffer a like end with him on this earth, but if so, we, like John Fisher, would receive a like reward in the next world. First, More died because he loved God. Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church and had Parliament pass the Act of Supremacy (making him head of the Church of England) and the Act of Succession (making Anne Boleyn the queen). More refused to subscribe to the Acts. He tried to avoid a confrontation by resigning as Lord Chancellor, but Henry pursued him. And love for God and respect for the authority of the church compelled him to refuse the oath when it was forced on him. He died saying he was "the king's good servant, but God's first." Second, religious liberty is important. More's death was noble he became a saint. It's admirable to die for your religion if there is no alternative. But it would be a better world if we didn't make people take that course. We protect the freedom of religion because we think it is wrong to coerce belief. Thomas More's story shows what can happen when these protections break down. Rosie, Carlito, & Lord Stanley Little Lord Stanley (Stachu) is gaining about a ½ a pound a day. Shrine Religious Formation is looking for a Decorations Coordinator Volunteer for our 2013 Vacation Bible School. This person would be responsible for coming up with ideas for decorations that fit the theme. (This is where checking forums and pictures on the internet come in!) Then they would gather supplies and coordinate a team of ready-to-go volunteers to make the decorations for next summer. Are you interested? Contact Janie Lynch at or jlynch@shrinechurch.com. SKY Vacation Bible School We just finished another fun-filled week of Vacation Bible School. Watch for pictures in upcoming Heralds! Does your child need envelopes? Preschool Religious Formation Register now for Preschool Religious Formation We are now accepting preschool registrations for the upcoming Fall for those potty trained children who will be at least 3 by December 1 and will not be starting kindergarten yet. Did you know that two years of preparation is required before receiving First Holy Communion? Volunteers are needed to aid Angels Place residents (adults with developmental disabilities) with their softball league. Confirmation candidates, along with a parent (required), are needed to assist and encourage the residents as they bat, run bases, and play the field. Bring the whole family and cheer from the stands! Shrine Catholic Athletes Sports Physicals Attention those Grades 5 through 12 who will be playing sports for Shrine Catholic Grade School, Academy, or High School in the Fall, Winter or Spring. The Dads Club will have a pediatrician who will be doing sports physicals on two days this Summer. The physicals will be done at Shrine Catholic High School s Gymnasium from 3:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, July 18; and Wednesday, July 25. The Sheltering Arms program of Catholic Social Services of Oakland County has been providing adult respite care for elderly people for 29 years. Whether for a few hours or a few days, staff provides personalized care on a flexible daytime schedule, in a safe and friendly environment. Transportation, bathing and other personal care services are offered, as well as geriatric services, counseling, education programs, caregiver resources and referrals. 12 Page 12 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Special Needs Religious Formation Program For the past 2 years we have had the wonderful opportunity to bring the faith to children with Special Needs. This past year we were blessed with an amazing group of children and parents and we are hoping to welcome more into the program this upcoming Fall Our focus again this year is preparing the children to be ready for the sacraments. We welcome all Children, those with Autism, Cognitive Impairment, ADHD, and any learning impairment. We work to prepare lessons for each child's own set of abilities and learning capacity so that they will be engaged and be able to learn at their own pace. The primary focus is to make learning about the faith enjoyable and inviting to each child, helping them to grow in the knowledge they need to be prepared to receive the grace filled and life giving sacraments! We will begin this Fall in October, and classes will be on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 PM.
