1 Shrine Herald August 5, 2012 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Faithful Citizenship An important piece of Faithful Citizenship is to exercise your responsibility to vote. Participating in all elections with an informed conscience is at the heart of being a good citizen. When it comes to candidates or political parties, the Church will not tell members how to vote. It is the role of the Church to speak out with regard to issues of morality and justice. Many issues involve one or more of these moral issues; protecting human life, promoting family life, pursuing social justice, practicing global solidarity. All of them need to be taken into consideration when forming our conscience and determining the way we will vote. In brief terms: Protecting human life begins with our opposition to abortion and euthanasia, which are pre-eminent threats to human life and dignity, and extends to our opposition to cloning, assisted suicide, and the death penalty, and our efforts to pursue peace. Promoting family life focuses on support of marriage, parental choice in education, responsible communications, and moral and economic supports for families. Pursuing social justice requires working for a more just economic life with decent jobs and just wages, providing adequate assistance to poor families, overcoming a culture of violence, combating discrimination, and defending the right to quality health care, housing, and food. Practicing global solidarity addresses overcoming hunger and global poverty, reducing debt and promoting development, responding to the needs of immigrants and refugees, pursuing peace, and reducing regional conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and other parts of the world. All of these areas and a candidate s position on all of them must be taken into consideration when determining how faithful citizen will cast Sharing Christ in and through the Church GOAL: $204,640 TOTAL PLEDGES: $163,548 % OF GOAL: 80% # OF COMMITMENTS: 831 continued on page 3...

Operation Backpacks Again this year, Sr. Peggy Deveney, IHM, and the Oakland County Jail Ministers, as well as The Haven, the shelter for women and children from abusive situations, have asked us to help their 100+ grade school children get ready for school. If you are willing to purchase a new backpack, and fill it with needed school supplies is asked to bring those to the church. (Last year, we were one of four parishes that met this need.) At the weekend Masses, these supplies may be deposited in the wicker box near the entrance of the St. Thèrése Chapel. Weekdays or evenings, please bring your gifts to the parish reception desk. Backpacks and supplies are needed by Sunday, August 19. Cash donations are always welcome. Place these in an envelope marked for Operation Backpack. Thank You from the Belarus Sisters To each of you who offered hospitality, transportation and meals, thank you. To you who made donations at the table displayed with religious articles, thank you. Sister Elena and Sister Maria are grateful for your support, and so am I. God bless you! - Sister Noreen Thank You Gardeners! A big thank you to you for working so hard on the gardens this year. They look GREAT and we have received a lot of compliments. Also a thank you to those who have gone beyond and weeded others gardens while they were on vacation. Just a reminder that Dream Cruise is coming soon so just double check your areas for weeds because we are a popular spot for visitors that weekend. There was a gag trophy going around with the staff of Shrine who have gardens...no we really don't judge the gardens. This was just an inside joke. Just a word about the grotto garden. We are totally redoing that garden because it was filled with vine weed and creeping Charlie, two very invasive weeds. Please bear with us. It is a work in progress and it will be beautiful once again. Thanks again for all your help. - Kathie and Jeanette

The Church will not tell you how to vote, but the Church seeks to provide the necessary information and tools to help in the forming of one s conscience. Detailed information on all of these important areas is available through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Michigan Primary Election Tuesday, August 7 Vote Responsibly. Chapel Doors Because of the generosity of John and Iola Sobeck, the brass doors at the foot of the tower leading into Saint Thèrése Chapel are being refurbished. This time the doors are being removed so that they can be completely restored and protected. This is a very expensive and time consuming process. The doors will be removed and returned in stages. It will mean that the entrances will be closed one at a time over the next few months. Please excuse the inconvenience. I would like to express our gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Sobeck for their generosity in this regard. Rosie, Carlito & Lord Stanley Rosie is enjoying Summer and every opportunity she gets to go to the lake. Stachu is becoming quite the strong swimmer. Carlito met a girl cockatoo belonging to the Lynch family and is totally smitten. 5 August 5, 2012 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "This simple and constant Eucharistic contact with Jesus encourages us to strive to fulfill God's will in everything." "Knowing that Jesus is really present in every celebration of the Holy Mass, that He waits for us in every tabernacle, that He listens to hear a word of love, of thanksgiving, of affection-and also of expiation for the offenses he receives every day-should make us eager to take part in the Mass, to visit Him in the tabernacle, to go to Him in our thoughts. We should not haggle over the time spent keeping Him company. It is time never lost....jesus, present beneath the appearances of bread and wine, is the foundation of our hope, for here we see how ardently God wants to communicate eternal life to us, and here we are given the daily sustenance we need-'living bread', the 'bread of life'. Here we receive the daily bread for which He told us to ask for in the prayer He taught the disciples." - Bishop Javier Echevarria Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Thank you! Life Matters Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood (PP) director turned pro-life, has created a new ministry And Then There Were None. This ministry reaches out to current and former abortion workers by offering financial, legal, emotional, and spiritual support as clinic workers transition out of the abortion industry and into a new line of work. When Abby witnessed an ultrasound guided abortion and realized that she could no longer continue working at PP, volunteers from 40 Days for Life were there to support her. Abby s goal is to do the same for others and in the process reduce abortions from the inside out. The ministry will provide the following: Up to three months of financial support after a worker resigns Emotional support as often as needed during the transition time A spiritual advisor of the former worker s choosing Legal counsel who will protect the worker s interests at no cost during the transition So far, seventeen abortion clinic workers have contacted her wanting out of the abortion industry. One testimonial: "I don't know how to thank someone that saved my life. I never thought I would be able to leave Planned Parenthood, but I did. I gained so much courage and strength after talking with Abby and networking with the people in ATTWN. I knew that whatever was thrown at me lies, lawsuits, whatever I would be able to get through it." How you can help: Pray for this ministry If you are a sidewalk counselor, mention ATTWN to abortion workers you may encounter Support their efforts; learn more at their website: Rachel s Corner After I finally dealt with my abortion and allowed myself to grieve the loss, I was able to reclaim my broken maternity. - Testimony after a Rachel s Vineyard Retreat Come to a Rachel s Vineyard Retreat and find healing and peace. 7 August 5, 2012 Page 7 Lending Library Shadows and Images, A Novel is an interesting book, with parallel stories going on about a fictional young couple and how their lives intersect with the life of John Henry Newman over a long period of time. The author has tried to keep the Newman part faithful to his life, sometimes using words from his letters and other writings as part of his dialogue. It gives a real picture of the many difficulties that Newman faced in his life as a result of his conversion to the Catholic faith. 14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower A Family Perspective The apostles were afraid when Jesus was transfigured in front of them. CHANGE is often frightening, especially in relationships, but inevitable. The child grows up, a parent ages and people mature. The only constant is our commitment to one another. - Bud Ozar

15 August 5, 2012 Page 15 Dear Monsignor William Easton and the National Shrine of the Little Flower, In last Sunday s Gospel (17 th Sunday B) there was a boy, who understood the teaching of Jesus. He gave all his fish and bread teaching us the power of sharing wholeheartedly. The Lord loves a cheerful giver. Jesus recognized the boy s generosity when he blessed his gift to humanity. Because of his generosity, the boy started a miracle. All of us are capable of starting this miracle. It is the miracle of sharing. At the end of my stay at the Shrine, I would like to express my gratitude to you Monsignor Easton, to your associates, and coworkers, and to all persons I ve met here. I would also like to express my gratitude to my teacher of English Francille Burns. The whole Shrine has helped me to come in contact with the living Church and divine reality. It was to me a true miracle of sharing. May all God s blessings be upon you. Yours in Christ, - Father Bogusław Migut National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop.
