1 Shrine Herald March 6, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Lenten Fasting Regulations 1. Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, and on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence. Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat. The sick or infirm as well as pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt. 2. Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permitted according to one's needs, but they should not together equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast. Again, the sick or infirm, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt. Baptism and Penance in Lent Through the two-fold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and we the faithful already baptized to celebrate the paschal mystery at Easter. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. We the faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting Ash Wednesday Masses at 6:30 and 8:30 am, 12 Noon, and 7:30 pm ourselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew our baptismal promises. Prayer, Fasting And Almsgiving The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The key to renewed continued on page 3...

3 March 6, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... appropriation of these practices is to see their link to baptismal renewal. Prayer: More time given to prayer during Lent should draw us closer to the Lord. We might pray especially for the grace to live out our baptismal promises more fully. We might pray for the elect who will be baptized at Easter and support their conversion journey by our prayer. We might pray for all those who will celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation with us during Lent that they will be truly renewed in their baptismal commitment. Fasting: Fasting is one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent. In fact, the paschal fast predates Lent as we know it. The early Church fasted intensely for two days before the celebration of the Easter Vigil. This fast was later extended and became a 40-day period of fasting leading up to Easter. Vatican II called us to renew the observance of the ancient paschal fast: "...let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind" (Liturgy, # 110). Fasting is more than a means of developing self-control. It is often an aid to prayer, as the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. The first reading on the Friday after Ash Wednesday points out another important dimension of fasting. The prophet Isaiah insists that fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God. "This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own" (Is 58:6-7). Fasting should be linked to our concern for those who are forced to fast by their poverty, those who suffer from the injustices of our economic and political structures, those who are in need for any reason. Thus fasting, too, is linked to living out our baptismal promises. By our Baptism, we are charged with the responsibility of showing Christ's love to the world, especially to those in need. Fasting can help us realize the suffering that so many people in our world experience every day, and it should lead us to greater efforts to alleviate that suffering. Abstaining from meat traditionally also linked us to the poor, who could seldom afford meat for their meals. It can do the same today if we remember the purpose of abstinence and embrace it as a spiritual link to those whose diets are sparse and simple. That should be the goal we set for ourselves a sparse and simple meal. Avoiding meat while eating lobster misses the whole point! Almsgiving: It should be obvious at this point that almsgiving, the third traditional pillar, is linked to our baptismal commitment in the same way. It is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given to us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized. Rosie, Carlito and Kodiak As many of you already know, Rosie understands the word LENT very well. If you tell her it is Lent, she will not eat a treat without dispensation. Now that Kodiak is one year old, that is 7 people years; he has to learn LENT as well. This will be a challenge of gigantic proportions. 5 March 6, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "The goal of every human life should be the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament." - Blessed Charles de Foucauld "O my God, how precious is the union which the soul attains with You, after having established itself in submission to Your will. Oh, how much to be desired in this union in which we resign our wills to the will of God! Happy the soul that has attained to it, for it will live peacefully both in this life, and in the next, for, apart from the peril of losing You, O Lord, or of seeing You offended, there is nothing that could afflict it, neither sickness nor poverty nor even death, for this soul sees clearly that You know what You are doing better than it knows itself what it desires!" - St. Teresa of Jesus Open Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am (arrive at 9:45 for 9 am adorer); Monday, 1 and 4 am; Tuesday, 9 am and 10 pm; Wednesday, 10 am and 3 pm; Thursday, noon; Friday, 8 am; and Saturday, 8 am, 3 and 4 pm. Life Matters Fr. Euteneuer, former President of Human Life International, published Pro-Life Dos and Don ts for 2009 in his January 23, 2009 Spirit and Life newsletter. One of the Dos listed was: Take back the culture: Even if the anti-lifers hold the reins of political power, we must not sit back and allow moral anarchists to define all the terms of the cultural or social agenda. Whether it is though social activism for life (crisis pregnancy centers, pickets and prayer marches) or through touching hearts and minds one soul at a time (persuasion, formation, teaching, media), we cannot be neutral about the direction our American culture is heading. It is leading us to a certain spiritual death and no one can afford that. We need to fight for it and never give up the battle. We have an opportunity to not only take back the culture but spread the our Catholic Culture by participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign from March 6 to April 17 with a peaceful public witness outside the WomanCare abortion facility at Southfield Rd. (1/4 mile south of 12 Mile Rd). Join fellow parishioners during the designated National Shrine Days on Tuesday, March 29, Sunday, April 3 or Monday, April 11. Here the students receive help in reading and language arts. They learn reading strategies to help them when they come to an unknown word or one that doesn t make sense. They practice reading at their instructional level, determined through testing, and then progress from that point. Students also learn pre-reading and other strategies to help with comprehension. They often work on writing skills as part of their lesson, focusing on grammar, sentence structure, paragraph formation and spelling. Upcoming School Tours Mrs. Amell We had a wonderful Open House for New Families last week, but the fun doesn t stop there! Would you like to learn how to overcome temptation and eat the foods you enjoy, while you grow closer to God and lose weight? Prevention Magazine chose Light Weigh because it met their criteria for a safe and healthy faith based diet program. There are no weigh-ins. The Light Weigh Bible Study DVD series will have an Orientation on Saturday, March 19 at 9:30 am in National Shrine Conference Center room A. Any questions, contact Lori at or l.ten@sbcglobal.net.

16 Page 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Roamin with Rosie A big woof to my friends out there. Lent is almost here. You know what that means? It means no snacks from Monsignor between meals! Oh, a big groaning growl to that one. It also means that Kodi might try snacking on my ears again because he is hungry. If anyone has any dog sized ears muffs out there, please send them my way! So what exactly is Lent anyway? Lent is a time when we prepare ourselves for Easter. The word Lent actually means Spring, and the idea is that when we exercise prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we are dying to ourselves and becoming new in Christ. Lent is about 40 days long. Last week, I asked about special activities that your families do during Lent. One family mentioned that they make a cardboard cross. They take pieces of paper and each day, write the name of someone to pray for. The person s paper is glued to the cross and remembered throughout the next day. Another family has special seek-and-find books that have Christian images and reflections. They read these every day and talk about them. And finally, another family will do good deeds throughout the day and then the family will reflect upon them after dinner in special journals. Last week, I mentioned something about places to obtain Lenten resources. Vikki J mentioned to me that there is a cool bookstore named Faith@Work in Troy. It s a Catholic bookstore and coffee house. They take their profits and donate them to charities. You might want to check them out! I would go if I could drive, but I am only a dog! So, this Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. What is going to happen? What color will you be seeing in the church? Let me know at rosie@shrinechurch.com. Eucharistic Ministry Notice The Eucharistic Ministry at the National Shrine is in need of more people to participate in the ministry. This ministry is dedicated to the distribution of the precious bread and blood of Jesus Christ during the sacrifice of the mass. The members of this ministry experience the rare pleasure of handling and sharing Christ s body and blood while serving our fellow parishioners. The commitment asked is for the Minister to serve at whatever mass they attend. No special schedule or planning is necessary. If you are interested, please attend the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Training Session to be held in the church on Saturday, March 12, at 10 am. The training session will last for about an hour and a half. We will meet in front of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. A Reminder Whenever your address, phone number, , or family status changes, please be sure to contact the parish office and update your information with us. It is critical that we keep our parishioner records up-to-date! Thank you!
