1 Knights of Columbus Council 6527 Minutes of Business Meeting Held March 14, 2019 At the Adult Lounge in the SJV Activity Center The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by Grand Knight John Garrison. Warden Joel Wilson vouched that all present were in possession of a current membership card. The opening prayer was offered by Deacon Dale Steffes and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by veteran Bob Sumicek. The opening ode was sung. Minutes of Previous Meeting - The minutes of the February meeting, as posted online and distributed for review, were offered for acceptance. A motion for acceptance was made and seconded and the minutes were accepted as written. Applications for Membership Warden Joel Wilson indicated there were no new applications. Chaplain s Report by Acting Deacon Dale Steffes: If you want your son to get into the seminary, talk to Deacon Dale. He urged participation in the Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharistic Adoration. He also mentioned Adoration by Candlelight at St. Mary s Seminary Chapel every 4 th Monday of the month at 7 pm. Grand Knight s Report by John Garrison: Dinner Henry Majoue was thanked for preparation of the meal this evening. Paul Case was thanked for providing the drinks. We will be cooking, serving and busing for the Lenten Dinner and are still in need of help. If anyone would like to volunteer, talk to Jay Campbell. On April 7 th is the SJV blood drive and volunteers are needed. An with details will go out this weekend. On Saturday, April `13 th, we will be hosting our Sporting Clays Tournament. Anyone who wishes to volunteer can talk to George Taylor. There will be a volunteer going out soon. On Tuesday, April 23 rd, our council will be cooking for the Holy Name Retreat Center s 24 th Annual Golf Tournament. If anyone would like to volunteer, talk to David Dettling. On Friday, April 26 th, we will most likely be helping at the Party on the Lot.

2 The 2019 Texas State Convention will be held in Corpus Christi on Friday, April 26 th to Sunday, April 28 th. I will be looking for two alternates to attend as our council representatives. The next Business Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 11 th. Our next Officers Meeting will be held on Monday, April 1 st. Treasurer s Report by Bob Hodgson: Balances at 2/28/19: Checking $47,068.19, Balance of CDs (3) $18,039.27, Total $65, February interest on CDs $10.06 Communications Read by Chancellor Charlie Moger: No communications to read. Financial Secretary s Report by Jack Stephens: Annual membership dues for 2019 are now due. They may be paid in one of three ways: In cash $36.00 at the meeting. Please do not send cash in the mail. By check at the meeting or mail the check to: Knights of Columbus Council #6527 P.O. Box Houston, TX Please make checks payable to the Knights of Columbus. One may go to the Memorial Council #6527 website and pay using a credit card. Using the credit card company (Cornerstone) there is a convenience fee of $1.50. Thus, the total fee to pay dues using this method is $37.50, $36.00 for the annual dues and a fee of $1.50. The link via the Council web site from where dues may be paid: For the month of February: There are no Receipts. Membership: Quota is 20; YTD Actual change towards quota is +14; total membership stands at 310. Net change is 12 2 have transferred out. Insurance: Quota is 7; YTD Actual is 2 (2 gains and 4 losses). 3rd Degree members needing a K of C badge may request one from Jack. Chancellor s Report on Vocations by Charlie Moger: No report. Committee Reports led by Deputy Grand Knight George Taylor: Church Deacon Dale Steffes There was a Pastoral meeting last night. SJV will participate in the Ignite fund raising for the diocese this fall. The goal is $4.3 million 2/3 for the diocese and 1/3 for the parish. A Facilities Director has been hired to manage the SJV property. Community John Collins (not in attendance) Council Sean Conti (not in attendance) Family Chuck Beck 6 Celebration of Life Picnic This is a new event, scheduled for Saturday, May 18. It is planned to be a family oriented event and with hopes to provide a gateway for attracting young new Council members. Membership John Garrison Our Membership quote for this year is 20. Currently, we stand at 14 new members for this year. We still have two candidates that still need to go through exemplifications. That will bring us to 16 with four moths to go. VA Hospital Visits Charles Pipkins, Jr. The next visit of the Council is on Sunday, April 14th. Please arrive by 8:00 a.m. at the north section of the SJV church parking lot for carpooling. 3 There are Lenten books available in the Narthex. Get one before they are gone. The answers to the Saints quiz were St. Patrick and St. Brigette. Get Out the Vote Bob Sumicek It is surprising that there is a lack of consistency among Catholics with regard to abortion. We need to practice our faith and vote accordingly. Talk to your neighbors about voting their faith. Public Relations/Historian Charlie Moger Celebration of Life Picnic This is a new event, scheduled for Saturday, May 18. It is planned to be a family oriented event with hopes to provide a gateway for attracting young new Council members. Sporting Clays Event in April George Taylor The event this year will be held Saturday, April 13 as opposed to being held in May in past years. It will be held at Westside Sporting Grounds, west of Houston, and will support the Houston Agape Alliance which supports Inner City Catholic Schools. The entry fee includes breakfast and lunch, sporting clays for the shooters, and access to the purchase of tickets for various raffle prizes and gun boards. Bob Menotti will lead the cooking crew. Please mark the day on your calendar, get the word out, and invite people to participate. Houston St Patrick s Day Parade Saturday, March 9. Parade starts and ends at Franklin and Smith. The Club needs some younger members ---the average age is currently about 88. The Club has a meeting one evening a month including praying the rosary. The Trustees will be presenting a slate of officers to be posted to the website in May, to be voted upon in June. If anyone is interested in becoming an officer, please talk to one of the current officers. Insurance Agent s Report Dwain Dungen, FICF Dwain asked the date the Knights of Columbus was chartered in Connecticut? The answer March 29, He also alluded to the bible reading from Esther saving us from our enemies. Our enemy is death. Life insurance and funeral plans are among those items geared toward helping those close to us in the event of our death. He has brochures outlining funeral plans, available with a personal visit. For our Council, 45% of members have a Knights insurance coverage product. With only a $300 annuity deposit, one can qualify for insurance which applies to our Council s goal for members obtaining insurance. Knights insurance assists the charity work coordinated by Supreme. Dwain is available to assist members with their insurance needs. This Church was damaged by the flood and financially assisted by the Knights of Columbus. Bob encouraged the Knights to attend the reopening. Drawings 50/50 drawing The winner of $35 was Dwain Dungen who donated it back to the Council.

The Good of the Order was read for the following individuals: Charles Pipkins, Sr., Charlotte Wade, Paul Case, Sr., Nancy Lechner, Don Marston and Peter Klein. Closing prayers Deacon Dale Steffes Deacon Dale led a decade of the Rosary to pray for those mentioned in the Good of the Order and for the Unborn.
