1 Shrine Herald November 13, 2011 We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton 2 Weeks And with your Spirit. As we are taken out of our routine with the change of the translation of the missal on the First Sunday of Advent, we will have the opportunity to ponder the significance of all that we say and do at Mass and rediscover the splendor. For example, consider the meaning behind one of the most noticeable changes found near the opening of Mass. It involves the people's response to the priest's greeting, "The Lord be with you." In the new translation, we will reply, "And with your spirit." This more adequately reflects the Latin text of the Mass ("et cum spiritu tuo") and the biblical language of St. Paul (see Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; 2 Timothy 4:22). It also more fully expresses an important theological point. When we say, "And also with you" in the present translation, one might get the impression that our response was merely intended to express an exchange of personal greetings or reciprocal good will: "May the Lord be with you, too, Father." But there is much more to this response. When a man is ordained a priest, the Holy Spirit comes upon him in a unique way, enabling him to perform the sacred rites of the Mass and consecrate the Eucharist. By responding, "And with your spirit," we acknowledge the Spirit's activity through the priest during the sacred Liturgy. We are referring to the "spirit" of the priest, the very core of his being, where he has been ordained to offer the sacrifice of the Mass. Indeed, we are acknowledging that since God works through the priest who is offering the Mass, ultimately it is Jesus Christ who is the head of the community gathered for the Liturgy, and it is his Spirit who is the primary actor in the Liturgy, regardless who the particular priest celebrating Mass may be. It is also an Epiclesis an invocation asking the Holy Spirit to be upon the priest and the Church assembled. It happens five times in the Mass: at the beginning, at the reading of the Gospel, at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer, at the greeting of peace, and at the end before the blessing. Each time we invoke the Holy Spirit to be upon us as we enter into an important part of the liturgy. The great continued on page 3...

3 November 13, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Epiclesis is when the priest asks the Holy Spirit to come upon our gifts of bread and wine that they be changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The greeting is much deeper than a Good morning or a Hi, how are you? It draws attention to the sacred work we are about in the liturgy of the Eucharist. Christ the King Next Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church Liturgical Year. It is the last Sunday we will use the current Sacramentary or Missal of the Church. In two weeks we begin the New Liturgical Year of the Lord 2012 with the First Sunday of Advent and the full implementation of the new translation of the Roman Missal. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak Kodi has found a new place to go walking. The roads and trails of Cranbrook Schools are wonderful and very dog friendly. Rosie prefers the lake over everything else. Carlito enjoys the confines of his cage. Kodi used to enjoy his crate, but now we have to leave the door open because he is too cramped if it is closed. 5 November 13, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Leading a Eucharistic life, then points to the unfolding of the divine love story...indeed it was a love to be shared, for the closer one is to God, "the more one has to go out of oneself to bring divine life into the world." - Saint Edith Stein: A Spiritual Portrait, by Dianne Marie Traflet "The attitude we take in our spiritual life depends greatly upon the idea we have of God. If we have a poor, impoverished concept of God, like the slothful servant in the Gospel, instead of being impelled to love Him and to give ourselves generously to His service, we shall be cold, indolent, calculating; and burying the talents we have received from the Master, we shall not trouble ourselves to use for God the benefits we have received from Him... When, on the other hand, our soul begins to understand that God is charity, when we penetrate even slightly the mystery of the infinite love that surrounds us, realizing God's love in the love which Jesus has for us, then everything changes spontaneously, because "love calls to love." - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Sunday, 4 pm; Monday, 1 am and 8 pm; Wednesday, 3 am; Thursday, 10, 11 am, 2 pm; Friday, 11 am, 1, 2, pm; and Saturday, 9 am. The following Holy Hours have persons who would like prayer partners with which to share the Holy Hours: Sunday, 9, 10 am and 2, 3, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 10 am; Tuesday, 9 am; Wednesday, 9, 11 am and 3, 11 pm; Thursday, 10, 11 am; Friday, 11 am and 1, ; and Saturday,. Please pray for the souls of Ann Seefeld and Kay Houston who passed away recently. Ann served as a captain and divisional leader for adoration for many, many years. She led the Rosary after daily Mass for many years, too. Her love for our Lord and our Lady was something she lived daily. Kay, also, was a long-time devoted adorer of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. I met her praying before an abortion clinic a couple of years ago. Both women lived their faith, and I am so grateful to God to have known them a little. May they, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in the peace of Christ. Nationally, 465 babies and their mothers were saved from the pain of abortion. Locally, we know of one mother who chose life for her baby. God used your presence and the words of sidewalk counselors to help these women understand that there is support available when they choose LIFE! A quote from Diane from NY posted on the 40 Days for Life website expresses what many have found as they got involved in 40 Days: Prior to 40 Days for Life, said Diane, I wanted to get involved in pro-life work but didn t know how or thought I didn t have the time to do so. The Lord changed that for me and opened a big door so that I am now able to be involved in 40 Days for Life and pro-life work. Through these 40 days, Diane has experienced changes in her life. I m willing to stand up for my faith and to be a witness, she said. I m willing to take a risk and share my ideas with people. I have the opportunity to pray with people on the street who need God s love and healing. I have new prayer partners and have made new friends. Even though the 2011 Fall 40 Day campaign is over, the organizers of the Southfield 40 Days for Life maintain an on-going prayerful presence at Womancare along with people who have been praying there for over 25 years on Saturdays mornings. There will be an online calendar at to sign up for times to pray from 7 am to 5 pm, Monday Saturday. Come and pray for Life! Lifespan Christmas Cards Right To Life - Lifespan Christmas Cards will be on sale after all masses on the weekend of November 19 and 20 in Heritage Hall. Ladies Guild Meeting Monday, November 14 at National Shrine Conference Center Just a reminder, please notify us when you have additions to the Military prayer list, or when one of our Military members can be taken off the prayer list. Thank you!

7 November 13, 2011 Page 7 Lending Library Immaculee Ilibagiza, the survivor of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, who wrote Left To Tell, has written another book, Our Lady of Kibeho, about the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to eight young people in the r e m o t e v i l l a g e o f K i b e h o Rwanda beginning in "Through these visionaries, Mary and Jesus warned of the looming holocaust, which (they assured) could be averted if Rwandans opened their hearts to God and embraced his love... [Mary] warned them that Rwanda would become 'a river of blood'--a land of unspeakable carnage -- if the hatred of the people was not quickly quelled by love...the prophetic and apocalyptic warning tragically came true during 100 horrifying days of savage bloodletting and mass murder." (of more than a million people). She tells this from the perspective of one who was alive and hearing about the visionaries before it happened, and then barely escaped being one of those who died. 11 November 13, 2011 Page 11 Grade School Happenings Fourth Grade There is never a dull moment in fourth grade! In religion, students have learned and practiced how to look up Bible verses. They also explored the fact that the Bible has books that addressed laws, prophesy, history, poetry, wisdom, and letters to others. With the Feast of All Saints, we ve explored traits of saints and how they led holy lives. All students researched a saint of their choice and then illustrated their chosen saint on a poster which we have hanging in the classroom and in the hallways, reminding us that we are all saints in the making. Recently we took a trip to historic Saint Anne s Church in Detroit, where Father Anthony celebrated Mass with us. Fourth graders then had a tasty lunch at Mexican Village, close to the church, and then traveled to Assumption Grotto. We prayed the rosary together there and received a special blessing from Father Bustamante and a lovely scapular. Our Michigan History lessons came alive when we visited the Historic St. Anne s Church, and now our lessons are taking us to 17 th century New France. We are peeking into the lives of the early explorers, fur traders and missionaries. This week we ll focus on the North American martyrs and how they gave their lives to bring the Catholic faith to the Huron Indians. Then we ll examine the life and adventures of another missionary, Father Jacques Marquette, who came to bring Christianity to Michigan s tribes in the Upper Peninsula. It must have been exciting to have lived back then! As fourth graders, the students are beginning to use their critical thinking skills for better comprehension of stories and texts. Critical thinking includes prior knowledge and context clues to help make real-life and relevant connections to our readings. They are quickly realizing that the answers are not always in black and white! The students have been reading a variety of genres including realistic fiction, historical fiction and fantasy. We recently studied Readers Theatre and followed the guidelines while performing various plays in class. We are becoming more detailed writers as we let our senses guide us. Recently, the students asked themselves how something looks, feels, smells, sounds and tastes in an effort to make their writing more vivid and interesting to the reader. Our SmartBoard interactive lessons have really helped us understand some difficult concepts such as possessive nouns and identifying subjects and predicates. Fourth grade science finds us learning about behavioral and physical adaptations animals have in order to survive. They created a crazy creature that was a blend of many animals that had physical and behavioral adaptations in order to survive. Now we are studying God s greatest and most-loved creation us! Systems of the body are the focus of our lessons. Our bodies rely on many systems to digest food, move us, help us think, and move our blood. Finally, in math we are studying algebra basics and learning to balance equations and use variables to solve for the unknown. We ve come to the conclusion that algebra is actually a lot of fun sort of like solving a mystery. Next we ll be diving into double digit multiplication. Mrs. Frechette Mrs. Gmeiner Mrs. Morrison Attention all Group and Ministry Leaders This Tuesday, November 15, is the Shrine Ministry and Group Leader s Catholic Culture Meeting at the High School Library (from 7 to 8:30 pm). At this meeting, leaders will have a chance to share about their groups and ministries, discover some new ways to promote Catholic Culture in their organizations, and network. It s a great way to learn more about the Shrine Community and the diverse Body of Christ. Please contact Steve Whitmore at or whitmoresj@yahoo.com with questions and to RSVP.

Lector workbooks for the upcoming liturgical year will be distributed at this meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Phil Clark at Thank you. Holy Father s Prayer Intentions November 2011 General Intention: For the eastern Churches, that their venerable tradition may be known and appreciated as a spiritual treasure for the entire Church. Missionary Intention: That the African continent may find in Christ the strength to fulfill the path of reconciliation and justice, indicated in the second Synod of Bishops for Africa. A Family Perspective As the man in today s Gospel entrusted his servants with his money, so God has entrusted our family to us. Like the good servants we are expected not to play it safe, but to selflessly and totally invest ourselves in each other. - Bud Ozar Vocations Well done, good and faithful servant How are you called to use your Godgiven talents? Is Christ inviting you to use them in faithful service as a priest? (Matthew 25: 14-30). If you think God is calling you to be a priest, call Fr.
