1 Shrine Herald February 7, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Archbishop Visits Shrine Archbishop Allen Vigneron will be visiting the National Shrine Parish twice in the next two weeks. The first occasion will be when the Archbishop will pay a pastoral visit to Shrine Catholic High School and Academy on Thursday, February 11. He will meet with the seniors, the faculty, and student representatives. He will tour the facility. The Archbishop will also celebrate Mass with the High School and Academy community. The second occasion for the Archbishop s presence at the National Shrine of the Little Flower will be the Kick-Off for the Lenten 40 Days For Life Campaign. He will be one of the keynote speakers at the rally. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. The Campaign Kick-Off takes place here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower from 7 to 9 pm on Fat Tuesday, the night before Lent begins, February 16. Everyone is encouraged to attend this important event. Mardi Gras The National Shrine Mardi Gras evolved from the Parish Council Christmas Party for Volunteers. Years ago, invitations were sent out to all parish members who had volunteered a significant amount of time to come to a special Christmas Party sponsored by the Parish Council in appreciation for all that the volunteers had done. Inevitably some people were missed or did not receive their invitation. This resulted in hurt feelings that were not intended. Since all parishioners support the parish through prayer, time, and donation, it was felt that the appreciation party should be open to all adult members of the parish. For a few years, invitations were sent out to everyone. Because the time before Christmas is so very busy, it was decided to have the party some time in early January. At one point it Royal Oak, MI Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time was a Valentine Party until it finally became a Mardi Gras on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. Now we have the Parish Mardi Gras Party sponsored by the Parish Council for all adult members of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish Community. It is your party. Come and join us next Saturday evening, February 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm in the Grade School Gym. It is a great opportunity to meet your fellow parishioners. continued on page 3...

3 February 7, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Fish Bake Speaking of opportunities to meet your fellow parishioners, the National Shrine Fish Bake is a super event in that regard. Beginning February 19 and every Friday of Lent from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, come to the Grade School Gym and enjoy a great fish or macaroni dinner while supporting the kids of the school. I look forward to seeing you there. South Oakland Vicariate The 31 parishes of south Oakland County for which I am the Vicar, have decided to call themselves the South Oakland Vicariate. We have had an initial meeting of the priests, deacons, and pastoral associates. We have also had a meeting of the Pastoral Council for the new vicariate. We will be having a meeting of the principals of the schools of the vicariate this week. There are also plans for meetings of the Religious Education Directors, Christian Service Coordinators, Youth and Young Adults, and the Spirituality and Peace and Justice Standing Committees of the Vicariate. Things seem to be off to a good and enthusiastic start. Rosie & Carlito Part of my New Year s resolution is to do more walking and lose some extra pounds. In these cold days I have resorted to a treadmill, and it is working out just fine. I get an early morning chance to walk, say my rosary, and clear my mind. Rosie is no help at all. She lays there looking at me through arched eyebrows as if to say, All that walking and you are going no where. On the other hand, since the treadmill is next to Carlito s cage, he marches back and forth on his perch whistling and shouting encouragement. He has become quite the little trooper in this regard. 5 February 7, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "I want only what He wills." -St. Thérèse of Lisieux "St. John of the Cross has said, 'God wants from us the least degree of obedience and submission, rather than all the works we desire to offer Him'. Why? Because obedience makes us surrender our own will to adhere to God's will as expressed in the orders of our superiors; and the perfection of charity, as well as the essence of union with God, consists precisely in the complete conformity of our will with the divine will. Charity will be perfect in us when we govern ourselves in each action-not according to our personal desires and inclinations-but according to God's will, conforming our own to His. This is the state of union with God, for 'the soul that has attained complete conformity and likeness of will (to the divine will) is totally united and transformed in God supernaturally.'" - Divine Intimacy Open hours: Sunday, Midnight, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Wednesday, 2 pm; Thursday, noon, 2 pm; and Saturday, 5 pm. Partners are needed for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 2, 5, and 6 pm; Monday, 10 am; Tuesday, 1 pm; Wednesday, 4 pm; Thursday, 7 and 11 am; and the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Sunday. (p. 1) "The range of this book is the whole of Catholic literary h i s t o r y, w i t h s t r e s s o n t h e 'literary", Understood in its broadest sense, literature is such writings as have excellence of form or expression, and expresses ideas of permanent and universal interest." 11 February 7, 2010 Page 11 Grade School Happenings Grade 4 Upon learning of the tragic earthquake in Haiti, the fourth grade students immediately initiated a bottle and can drive to raise money for relief efforts. With the aid of teachers, parents, and neighbors, 1,876 returnables were collected in just four short days, with the proceeds being sent to Catholic Relief Services-Haiti. As part of Vocations Week we began praying and doing acts of kindness for our adopted seminarians. We hope to send them a very prayerful Spiritual Bouquet for Valentine s Day. Along with vocations, we learned more about the Sacrament of Baptism and how it makes us a Priest, a Prophet and a King. We will now begin an indepth study of the Ten Commandments. Do you know what a river hog is? Ever hear of a shanty boy? Perhaps you didn t have your cup of black lead this morning. If you haven t already guessed by now, it s Lumberjack Week in the fourth grade. We ve had a great time learning about the entertaining (but dangerous) lives of these extraordinary men as we study Michigan s logging history. Oh, but that s not all. Michigan just celebrated 173 years of Statehood! We had to squeeze in a special birthday celebration recognizing this important day. Our social studies lessons will culminate with our long-anticipated trip to the State Capitol, Supreme Court and the Michigan Historical Museum in May. Long-division takes lots of patience and practice, but the fourth graders have successfully managed to master dividing and three and four digit dividends. Most students have found that they actually like longdivision more than they like multiplication. Mini meteorologists fill the fourth grade halls. We are studying the various factors and causes of weather. Each day we view our daily weather forecast and will begin comparing them to some of our friends and families forecasts from other parts of the world. Students will be weather mapping and participating in group weather forecasting. The balloon race to explain air pressure is highly anticipated! We ve recently studied the mystery genre by digging into Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys. In reading class we like to take advantage of cross curricular learning. Most recently the story, Marven of the Great North Woods, tied into our Michigan history study of logging. Next month we ll read, So You Want to be President? which is a great lead into President s Day. Last, but certainly not least, the fourth graders continue to improve their writing skills. Most recently they wrote about the similarities and differences between third and fourth grade. They also improved their descriptive writing and word choice by designing a vacation postcard. It s not hard to see that there s never a dull moment in fourth grade!
