1 Shrine Herald August 1, 2010 Father Migut Father Bogusław Migut joined us on June 27 and has been a wonderful addition to our parish for the past month. This week, Father will be returning to Poland, where he is a professor of theology at the Catholic University of Lublin. Father Bogusław is also an author, and is working on an international conference for priests that will take place in Rome next year. One of Father s goals during his month here was to become more familiar with the English language. He has certainly accomplished that. Personally I have found his homilies to be very insightful and deeply spiritual. We were most fortunate to have him with us for the past month. We want him to know that he always has a home here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. During the month of August, Father Jarosław Kowalczyk will be with us. Father Jarek will be on holiday from his parish in Poland and wants to practice his English in a parish setting. I am sure everyone will extend a warm National Shrine welcome to Father Jarek. Dream Cruise Here it is the first of August and Dream Cruise is only 3 weeks away. I have tried to explain what Dream Cruise is like to our new associates, but I think they will just have to experience it for themselves. The part I really look forward to is the Parish Party on Friday evening. It is a lot of fun and a good chance to talk with a lot of fellow parish members. Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton This year the Parish Party is on Friday, August 20. Mark your calendars and plan on attending. Feedback from Kids A number of youngsters in the parish have told me that they really miss reading Roaming with Rosie and Cruising with We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Carlito in the Herald. The 2 of them seem to have taken the idea of summer vacation very seriously. Their motto is No work and all play for the summer. Hang in there my children; they will be back at it sooner than you think. School will be starting before you know it as well. CSA We are so close to being over the top. We are only short about $7, and we will have made our target in pledges. Anything over our target will stay with the parish. There are still a number of cards outstanding. If you have not yet made your gift or pledge, please consider doing so now. continued on page 3...

We recently noticed that we are now missing two years of these publications. They are the years of 1957 and The 1957 book has been missing for a number of years, but the 1982 book has been missing for only a few months. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these books, please contact Jack Hoolehan at the National Shrine Office, , ext Holy Father s Prayer Intentions August 2010 The Unemployed and the Homeless General: That those who are without work or homes or who are otherwise in serious need may find understanding and welcome, as well as concrete help in overcoming their difficulties. Victims of Discrimination, Hunger and Forced Emigration Missionary: That the Church may be a home for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger, or wars forcing them to emigrate to other countries.

3 August 1, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... The CSA provides for the operation of a number of archdiocesan ministries that are beyond the scope of any one parish and yet are necessary for the work of the Church. I would like to thank all of you who have joined me in making a significant pledge to this most important work of the Church. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak Rosie is enjoying the peace and quiet of time alone with all of us. Kodi left this past week for Boot Camp. Our hope is that in the hands of a professional trainer for a few weeks he will become a much better behaved puppy. Much like when children go to summer camp, I am not sure for whom this was more difficult, him or me. I really miss his presence. I think that both Rosie and Carlito are secretly hoping that his absence is permanent. 5 August 1, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "If the heart is occupied with inordinate attachments to self or creatures, it is clear that it cannot love God with all its strength, which divided between God and self, between God and creatures." - Divine Intimacy "The Savior hangs before you with a pierced heart. He has spilled His heart's blood to win your heart. If you want to follow Him in holy purity, your heart must be free of every earthly desire. Jesus, the Crucified, is to be the only object of your longings, your wishes, your thoughts,...the arms of the Crucified are spread out to draw you to His heart. He wants your life in order to give you His." - St. Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) Open hours: Sunday, 3 am (starting in September), 10 and 11 pm; Monday, 1 am and 5 am; Tuesday, 12 am; Thursday, 11 am, noon, and 2 pm; Saturday, 4 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 5, and 6 pm; Monday, 5 and 10 am; Thursday, 10, 11 am, and 2 pm; Friday, 9, 11 am and 4 pm; the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Sunday. Call Marie Lama at if you are interested in a Holy Hour or in subbing. Please Note: Please do not readjust the thermostat in the chapel. Monsignor, I believe, wants it set at 74 degrees, which should be comfortable for all. If you have rosaries, holy cards, and religious booklets you have received in the mail and don't know what to do with them, please consider donating them for the "freebie"/ evangelization basket. Just put them in a bag with my name on it and place it in the cupboard under the sign in sheets or turn the bag in to the parish office. I like to think of all the souls those items may be touching, comforting, teaching, encouraging. Many thanks to all who have so generously donated thus far. May God bless you! Life Matters Due to term limits, Michigan has the largest number of seats open this election year. Open positions to be elected in November include the governor, attorney general, 38 state senators and 110 state representatives. However, the August 3 primary election, will in many cases, be the determining election. Please make time to vote in this important election. For sources on the pro-life position of candidates, consult Right to Life of Michigan ( and ) or Right to Life Lifespan ( and ) We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power. We must exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God's children who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable" (US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n. 34). No appeal to policy, procedure, majority will or pluralism ever excuses a public official from defending life to the greatest extent possible. As is true of leaders in all walks of life, no political leader can evade accountability for his or her exercise of power (Evangelium Vitae, 73-4). Those who justify their inaction on the grounds that abortion is the law of the land need to recognize that there is a higher law, the law of God. No human law can validly contradict the Commandment: 'Thou shalt not kill'" (US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n. 32). School Backpack Collection The National Shrine of the Little Flower Knights of Columbus Council #12408 again is collecting backpacks for the children that are helped by the Oakland County Criminal Justice Ministry. Sister Peggy Devaney, IHM, is the long-time chaplain of the jail ministry. Now through Sunday, August 15, there will be barrels in Heritage Hall by the door into the church and at the Northwood ramp door. During the weekend Masses, please place the backpack in the barrel and a member of the council will make sure it gets to the right place. During the week, the backpacks should be brought to the church office. We are looking for new backpacks only. Please consider putting pens, pencils, and other school supplies inside. 7 August 1, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library Louis De Wohl has a way of making the lives of saints and other significant Catholic historical figures come alive, and we have just added another of his novels to our collection, The Last Crusader: A Novel About Don Juan of Austria. He was the one who led the Christians to victory in the famous sea Battle of Lepanto, against incredible odds. It will hold your attention. De Wohl's novels about St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Augustine, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Joan of Arc, St. Monica and her son, Constantine, are good introductions to read before delving into the more scholarly works of some of the above figures. (Section 4, Fiction). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). Assisted Listening Device The National Shrine of the Little Flower Church is happy to offer Assisted Listening Devices to those who attend Church and are in need of listening help. For those who would like the use of one during Mass, all you have to do is ask an usher and they will bring you an Assisted Listening Device. We normally have seven Listening Devices in the church for use by parishioners. Today we have none and will have to go out and buy some more. I believe the problem is simply that when Mass is over, the person who borrows the Listening Device just forgets to return it to the usher. If you find one of these Listening Devices at home, please return it to the church so that the next time someone needs one at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish, we will have one to give out.
