1 Shrine Herald July 31, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dream Cruise Our Parish Dream Cruise Party is only two weeks from this coming Friday. Already the dogs and I have seen people parking along Woodward in anticipation. Friday, August 19, the night before the Official Dream Cruise, we will once again have our parish party in the Woodward Grade School Parking Lot. It is a lot of fun. The meals are inexpensive primarily due to the generosity of Chicken Shack. There will be music, dancing, things for the kids to do, and the CARS on Woodward. Do plan on joining us for a great fun evening with fellow members of the parish. August 15 Solemnity of the Assumption Because the Solemnity of the Assumption falls on a Monday this year, the obligation to attend Mass has been abrogated. That means that we are not obliged to attend Mass. It is still an important day. The Mass of the solemnity will be celebrated at the regular weekday Mass times of 6:30 and 8:30 am. Father Beto Espinoza Please keep Father Beto in your prayers. He is presently investigating two different transplant programs beyond what he is already involved in. One of the programs is here in Michigan, the other is in Wisconsin. You will notice that he is not on the regular schedule. The other priests and I are trying to give him all the time necessary to investigate these programs and to make sure he has enough time to rest. Pray that he soon has the opportunity for a transplant and that he will have a swift and complete recovery. Father Boguslaw Migut Father Boguslaw has been with us since the Fourth of July. He will be leaving to return to Poland next Saturday, August 6. When he gets back to Poland, his first duty will be to organize a group of more than 2,000 scouts who will be doing service at World Youth Day in Spain during August. As soon as that is over he will resume his responsibilities as professor of Theology of Liturgy at the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland. It is always a joy to have him with us and we look forward to his return. He is a great cook as well. continued on page 3...

3 July 31, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak As I wrote two weeks ago, Father Boguslaw often joins Kodiak and me on our walks. It is our own little pack. I call it Walking with Kodi and Bogi. The hot muggy weather has inflicted a hot spot on Rosie. The prescription is to keep it clean and dry. Poor Rosie, no swimming till it heals. We don t want it to get any worse. Carlito retreated to the cage inside where there is AC. The 100 degree days were too much even for him. Looks like he can move outside again. 5 July 31, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "'Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.' Then He said, 'Bring them here to me,' and He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass." - from Matthew 14 "Our imaginations are easily misled into desiring a false infinity, when once we begin to long for 'wealth'. For 'wealth' and 'money' are things that appeal to the imagination, which is insatiable in its wishes. Real goods, such as those our bodies need, have not this quality: there is a narrow limit to the amount of food our stomachs will hold and when that is reached, we do not wish for more. Our Lord fed the five thousand in the desert with fish and bread, and all of them had their fill. But if He had given them, instead, $20,000 war bonds, no single person would have said, 'One is enough for me.'...like money, love and power can become ersatz religions: those who pursue these things as ends will never find satisfaction. Such men are all in pursuit of God, but they do not know His name, nor where to look for Him....But the poor in heart are rich in happiness. God gave us love enough to spend in getting back to Him so that we could find Infinity there; He did not give us love enough to hoard." - Bishop Fulton J. When donating to charities, always check if they are involved in activities contrary to Catholic Church teaching (e.g. abortion, embryonic stem cell research, gay marriage, etc.). Organizations like Life Decisions International ( Ph: ; ldi@fightpp.org or our local Right to Life Lifespan office ( ) are available to help answer questions. The Right To Life LIFESPAN Resource Book of 2011 provided a list from the Right to Life of Michigan Educational Fund of those organizations that support embryonic stem cell research. They indicated that information regarding the organizations support comes from policy statements, membership in coalitions that lobby for research and signatures on letters expressing public support for the research. The Resource Book lists four pages of organizations. Some of the most popular are: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Medical Association, Arthritis Foundation, Easter Seals, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and a large number of universities including the University of Michigan, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Yale and Duke. Hope you re enjoying the second half of summer. Cooler days must be ahead! Thank you and God bless your family. Mike Reece reece@shrineschools.com mreece@shrinechurch.com Grades 7/8 Religious Formation Thank you from Right to Life - Lifespan This thank you letter goes out to all the Confirmation Candidates and other volunteers who helped with the book sale earlier this month: I send you this warmest thank you, for all the hard work you did at our Book Sale last week. This project is very labor intensive and without your help we could not have been so successful. We made close to $7,000! Thanks to you, this will allow us to further the cause of Life. We will use this as part of the seed fund when organizing CIDER Walk in the fall. Our CIDER Walk not only educates the young just by their participation, but gets them involved with an activity that will save lives. Also, it is a fundraiser in order to continue our work with youth. In addition, this money will be used in supporting our outreach program, Wee Care. God bless you for helping us with this most vital work. Diane Fagelman, President Right to Life Lifespan Vassar Street Suite 545 Livonia, MI I hope all is well with you and summer has been both enjoyable and restful. We certainly can t say it wasn t a great summer for swimming and water sports. Hopefully, those of us who prefer the 80 s to the 90 s will see a little more of that as the weeks continue. Our new Catholic Connection handbooks have been ordered for the approaching school year. I ll bet our students are all as excited as I am about using these new books! Remember, this new book is used for both seventh and eighth grade Religion classes so seventh grade students must keep them in tip-top shape! No problem, right? Among, the many things you re doing this summer, be sure to take time each week to worship together at Mass and pray together as a family throughout the week. We always take a few minutes as a family to pray on our way to a beach (since everyone s in the car, anyway) or while sitting out in the yard in the evening after it s cooled off to 90. Pick a time to pray the Rosary together. What a great way to thank God for the many blessings we have received, especially throughout these summer months. Have a great week and may God continue to bless your family. - Michael Reece Youth Service Team Opportunities Focus: HOPE Food Distribution Saturday, August 13, 9 am, Ferndale Site Parents and youth are needed to unload the truck for the Focus: HOPE food distribution site. 11 July 31, 2011 Page 11 Legion Of Mary The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate; Mediatrix of all Graces, have formed themselves into a legion for service to the Church and Our Lady. The object of the Legion of Mary is the Glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary s and the Church s work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ. The Legionaries hope to render themselves worthy of their great heavenly Queen by their loyalty, their virtues, and their courage. The Legion is built on two masterpieces of organization the Roman Legion and the modern Society of St. Vincent de Paul. From the Roman Legion comes the call for loyalty, courage, and discipline. From Fredrick Ozanam s St. Vincent de Paul Society comes its spiritual, adaptability, fraternal charity, the personal report at the weekly meeting, and visiting in pairs during their assigned work. The Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff on the eve of Our Lady s Nativity, September in Dublin Ireland. Today the Legion is the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church carrying out a universal spiritual apostolate. The basic unit of the Legion of Mary is the Praesidium, a Roman army term indicating a frontier guard, a bulwark for defense, a symbol of courage. The primary obligation set by the Legion as a standard procedure is regular attendance at the weekly meeting, a brief weekly report, and accepting the spiritual work of bringing Christ to souls and souls to Christ. This work is assigned by the spiritual director or the president and is usually done in pairs. The National Shrine has a Prasidium called Our Lady of Victories. We meet every Monday at 7:30 pm in the conference center. The prayer meeting lasts 90 minutes. If you have any questions about the Legion of Mary or the Maria Legionis Magazine, please visit our website at National Shrine Career Network Presents: Career Workouts August 1, 7 to 9 pm, National Shrine Conference Center The National Shrine Career Network Presents, Career Workouts, a new addition to our line-up of our regular career networking meetings. Career Workouts are a great opportunity for professionals to come together to reevaluate, redesign, and rework their career. SCN s Career Workouts provides you with the ability to collaborate with others, as well as work individually on reemployment solutions. Every Workout is comprised of new work education topics such as personal branding or social media, organized discussion/sharing, diligent career development, and fun! Who: All are invited Where: The National Shrine Conference Center When: Monday, August 1 from 7 to 9 pm Why: Because lifelong employability is in the journey, not the destination! Questions: Do not hesitate to contact SCN s Career Workouts leader Gerard Baltrusaitis at or bubba1113@comcast.net. Would you like to offer your expertise to this group?
