Remember it is all for the kids! I am looking forward to spending the evening with you next Saturday. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Changing Lives Together This weekend at all the Masses, packets of information about the Archbishop s initiative Changing Lives Together will be available. The packets contain important information about the purpose and goals of the initiative for both the Archdiocese of Detroit and the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish and Schools. The primary purpose of Changing Lives Together is to strengthen our parish and schools as we move into the future and the accomplishment of our Master Plan. The secondary purpose of the initiative at the level of the Archdiocese is to strengthen all Catholic Schools, the priesthood, and ministry to the most disadvantaged. Together with Christ and one another we can do great things. To receive your packet, you are asked to fill out a card at the end of Mass. When you hand in your card at the door of the church you will receive your packet. We are asking you to fill out the card so that we can make sure our contact information is correct, and so that we know who has picked up their packet. Packets will be delivered or mailed to those who did not turn in a card and pick up their packet. continued on page 3...

3 February 27, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... This is a very important initiative to strengthen and revitalize our parish family. Please do your part. Together we can change lives. New Maintenance After a long and detailed investigation, and with the unanimous endorsement of the Parish Finance Council, we have entered into a contract with GCA Services Group for the maintenance and custodial services of the church and the public areas attached to it. GCA began on February 11. As of this point we are very pleased and favorably impressed with their performance. The change will provide considerable savings for the parish while providing improved services. GCA is a large national group that currently provides services to Holy Name Parish and a number of local school districts in the area. Because of their size, depth of experience, and bulk buying power, they are able to pass along considerable savings to us. As we develop we are looking to expand these services and savings to our schools as well. Rosie, Carlito and Kodiak With the thaw and tease of spring before our walloping with snow last Sunday, the yard had turned to mud. I took the opportunity to clean up after both Rosie and Kodi. The snow had covered about four huge bags of debris and other stuff. I will spare you the details. Kodi however took the opportunity to wallow in the mud. What a mess he was. Off we went to Scrubbers Dog Wash last Friday evening and presto he looked like a new dog, all fluffy, soft and clean just in time for the new snow. 5 February 27, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Let nothing disturb you, nothing cause you fear. All things pass; God is unchanging. Patience obtains all. Whoever has God needs nothing else; God alone suffices." - St. Teresa of Jesus St. Paul of the Cross advises us: "When you notice that your heart is moving away even the tiniest bit from that inner peace that comes from the living faith-experience of the divine presence in the soul, stop and examine what the cause of this anxiety might be. Maybe it is some worry concerning your house or children, or some situation you cannot change at present. Bury it in God's loving will." Remind yourself that nothing can happen without the Lord's knowledge and permission-and as a loving Father, He will never abandon or forget you. - Saintly Solutions to Life's Common Problems, Fr. Joseph Esper "He will never abandon or forget you." What is our response to Him? Do we forget Him, ignore Him, abandon Him? February 15 marked our 23rd anniversary of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration!!!! The love and devotion of our priests, all the adorers, the captains, and divisional leaders are what make this possible with the grace of God. We are a family who love our Eucharistic Lord and want to show thanks for the great Gift He has given us in giving us Himself. With Lent approaching, please consider 1 hour a week given in thanks to our Lord. Thanks to Mary Ellen Cavanaugh who helped update the adoration sub list!!! The sub lists are in the plastic pocket on the bulletin board. You'll also notice a sheet posted on the bulletin board for posting your Holy Hour when you need a sub. Hopefully, someone will be able to respond to your need when they read the posting. It's another avenue for finding subs. Hope it helps. Thanks to the donor of the children's prayer box in vestibule of the Adoration Chapel. Please feel free to ask you children to write down a prayer request that can be put in the box. Those requests will be prayed for by adorers. Please note!!! We have two new captains who will be starting this week: Gaby Valenzuela, , will be watching over the 11 pm hour for the week. Adorers on that hour, please make note of this change. Gaby is the Saturday, 3 am adorer. She has been very loyal to her Holy Hour and to the Lord. Thank you, Gaby, for accepting this role. I know God will continue to bless you!!! Ann Cole, , will be trying out the captain role at the 5 pm Holy Hour slot. 5 pm adorers, please note the change. Ann has been a loyal adorer and has a Holy Hour at 5 pm on Monday. Thank you, Ann, for being willing to try out this role. May God bless you for your generosity and kindness!!! Special thanks to Mrs. Linda Wignman for her generous donations to the freebie/evangelization basket!!!! May God bless you abundantly! Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us! David Wittla, US Army Life Matters Over the past 3 years that we have participated in 40 Days for Life at the Southfield location; I have had the opportunity to talk to many people about getting involved and coming out to pray in front of the clinic. Some responses are: I m praying at home to end abortion, I don t need to pray in front of the clinic or I m prolife, but standing in front of the clinic just makes it worse for the people going in. I ask you to consider whether these are really excuses out of fear of becoming a public witness to something others may disagree with. I ask you to consider whether the sacrifice God is asking for you this Lent is simply to be a witness of our Catholic culture and stand up for the unborn. While you may believe you will find ridicule or judgment on the sidewalk in front of the abortion clinic, you will find prayerful, people of faith who will offer you courage and inspire you to stand up for your beliefs. I ask you this Lent to consider: Trust God Take Action! Join the Southfield team in a 960 hour vigil a prayerful presence outside of WomanCare abortion facility at Southfield Rd. (1/4 mile south of 12 Mile Rd). Kickoff prayer vigil planned for Sunday, March 6 at 3 pm in front of the clinic. Volunteer to pray in front of the abortion clinic for an hour or more. No side-walk counseling is required; just a peaceful presence. 960 continuous hours are available. You can sign up at or contact Barb at Word of Life Crisis Pregnancy? 7 February 27, 2011 Page 7 Lending Library Bob and Penny Lord's book, Visionaries, Mystics & Stigmatists tells about the lives of 14 "saints and blesseds, religious and laity, who have received inner locutions, the gift of healing, reading men's hearts, prophecies, apparitions from heaven, and yes, the five wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ... whose messages have been affirmed by Mother Church with much of what they have foretold coming to pass." (Back Cover) (Section 5, Lord). Related to this, you might also be interested in reading, A Still Small Voice, A Practical Guide on Reported Revelations, by Father Benedict Groeschel. It offers "a brilliant investigation into a complex and fascinating subject in which the boundaries of mysticism, psychology and spiritual direction intersect. 11 February 27, 2011 Page 11 Grade School Happenings Good things are happening in the Computer Lab in addition to computer classes. This year I have been working with groups of students as a part of our Enrichment Program. The program works to provide students identified through top test scores and academic achievement an opportunity to work on creative projects which integrate many subjects. The first project we worked on was to create a commercial for the students favorite cereal. In the process we used the computer to research the various companies, barcode apps to check prices, calculators to figure unit pricing, and word processing to write the scripts. The students created the backdrops and designed their costumes. The final product was digitally captured by the students using our Flip cameras. The commercials provided a way for the students to present their reports in a creative way, and since the files could be saved on the server, they were able to share the information they had gathered with their classmates. Our current project is supporting the school wide Heritage Day Project. This year the theme is Looking Back to the 1930 s. The students have done research and are preparing presentations to share on March 4. They are creating murals that focus on various aspects of the time period. Others will dress as famous people from the 1930 s and stroll the halls telling all of the students about their lives bringing history to life. Some of the older students are using Photo Story to create multimedia presentations that will run throughout the day. The entire school will benefit from the work that the Enrichment Group is doing. - Mrs. Babbage Note: Parishioners, if you have any items from the 1930 s and would like to share them with the students please contact Mrs. Babbage at babbage@shrineschools.com or at We are especially looking for a flag, radio, telephone, toys, books, magazines. Open House for New Families - March 3 to We invite one and all to join us for our Open House. It s just around the corner! Also, we invite any interested families to come and see our kids in action by touring the school. Give us a call at or moon@shrineschools.com to set up a convenient time. We love to show all the good things happening at Shrine Catholic Grade School! Support The Shrine Catholic School Auction! You can buy your Shrine Catholic Auction Raffle Tickets after every Mass on Saturday and Sunday (February 12-13). Each ticket is $5 and comes with the chance to win $2,500 for first prize; $1,000 second prize and third prize of $500! (Drawing is the night of the auction, March 5. Need not be present to win.) You also receive a $3 coupon for Chicken Shack with each ticket you purchase. Please support our school s largest fundraiser of the year and buy some tickets after Mass. See you then! A Reminder Whenever your address, phone number, , or family status changes, please be sure to contact the parish office and update your information with us. 16 Page 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Roamin with Rosie So what was up with the snow this past week? I was just looking forward to jumping in the lakethen pow! We get a blizzard!!! I think we should move the National Shrine to some place warm like Florida! Last week, I asked if anyone knew where the first Shrine Catholic Grade School was and when it was opened. This appeared to be a stumper to many. The school opened on September 17, It was located at the Marion Burton Public School on Scotia Road in Huntington Woods. The Shrine Catholic school (grades 1-8) was in that building for five years. In 1939 (January 4), the school moved to its current location. The original school opened with four Sisters of Charity, two lay teachers and 230 students. Last week, Father Lang was running around the rectory and church saying, 17 more days until Ash Wednesday! Get ready!!! What is your family planning on doing special for Lent? Please let me know at rosie@shrinechurch.com. Is your family needing ideas? Then you might try googling Lent Family Resources. You ll find all sorts of cool stuff. If you want books or printed materials, try Creative Communications for the Parish (at: or check out a local bookstore like GA Fuch s in Madison Heights. There are so many resources out there to help families get into the spirit of Lent, so check them out. Meanwhile, what can you tell me about Lent? Why do we have it? What does the word Lent mean? Please write me at: rosie@shrinechurch.com. Attention National Shrine Parishioners! Many parishioners have requested that they receive updates and mailings via . We are working on implementing a more technology-efficient system to accommodate these requests. We would like to take this opportunity to gather and record a family address and update our parishioner records with this information. If you have an address, and you wish to have your parish record updated to include it, please fill out the form below and return it to the rectory or drop it in the Sunday offering basket in an envelope marked: Attn: Vicki Holtyn Update Last Name: First Name: Street Address: City/Zip Code: Home Phone: Address: NATIONAL SHRINE PARISHIONER UPDATE

17 February 27, 2011 Page 17 Eucharistic Ministry Notice The Eucharistic Ministry at the National Shrine is in need of more people to participate in the ministry. This ministry is dedicated to the distribution of the precious bread and blood of Jesus Christ during the sacrifice of the mass. The members of this ministry experience the rare pleasure of handling and sharing Christ s body and blood while serving our fellow parishioners. The commitment asked is for the Minister to serve at whatever mass they attend. No special schedule or planning is necessary. If you are interested, please attend the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Training Session to be held in the church on Saturday, March 12, at 10 am. The training session will last for about an hour and a half. We will meet in front of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Last Supper Sculptures The Timothy P. Schmalz sculpture of the Last Supper is being discontinued. We were able to purchase the last remaining 20 at a reduced price. The former selling price of $100 is now just $60. This beautiful sculpture is (6 H x 20.5 W x 9 D) and comes in Flagstone or Carrara White. Again, it is priced at only $60. If you have any questions, please contact Jack Hoolehan at the Gift Shop on , ext. 418.

19 February 27, 2011 Page 19 Holy Father s Prayer Intentions February 2011 General Intention: That the family may be respected by all in its identity and that its irreplaceable contribution to all of society be recognized. Missionary Intention: That in the mission territories where the struggle against disease is most urgent, Christian communities may witness to the presence of Christ to those who suffer. Vocations God promises never to forget us. If you feel distant from God, who has moved? Seek a closer relationship with God and all that you need will be given to you (Isaiah 49: & Matthew 6: 24 34). If you think God is calling you to be a priest call Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations, at or visit A Family Perspective Because we believe we can control and create our own world, we attempt to juggle multiple agendas and we pay a price of neglecting those closest to us. Too late we reach the point of asking Was it worth it? We really can t serve two masters. - Bud Ozar National Shrine of the Little Flower Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office and the National Shrine gift shop. With this enrollment, the person or persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a Mass once a month at the National Shrine on or near the first Friday of each month. The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The suggested offering for the enrollment card and a card suitable to be given to family or individuals is $25 per card.
