1 Shrine Herald January 9, 2011 Apology Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Last week I mentioned the many different choirs and musical groups in our parish and I inadvertently left out one very important Holy Spirit allowed that to happen so that I could draw special attention to this very special group. The Resurrection Choir is made up of volunteers, both men and women, who sing and provide liturgical support for funerals at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. When a funeral is scheduled we can count on them to be there and provide singing for a fitting celebration of the liturgy. They are notified by phone and then show up. There are times when they have helped with more than one funeral on one day. Very often the grieving families are so overwhelmed they are not sure what to do. Sometimes members of the family are not sure how to respond. The Resurrection Choir is there to respond to the prayers, sing hymns, and sing the parts of the Mass. Both the families and the priests are very grateful for their presence and their most important ministry. The Resurrection Choir is always open to new members. Information is available through the parish office. The Baptism of the Lord In the revised liturgical calendar of the Church, the Christmas Season ends with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. We now enter into Ordinary Time until Ash Wednesday on March 9. Because of the end of the Christmas Season, the decorations for Christmas will be taken out of the church this week. Royal Oak, MI The Baptism of the Lord Jesus did not need to be baptized to be freed from sin because He is without sin. He was baptized so that we might be freed from sin. By His baptism we are made holy, the waters of baptism are made holy. As we are baptized in the waters made holy by Christ we are freed from sin and made holy in Him. Jesus models for us the way to the Father. We acknowledge our sins, repent, and rely on the mystery of continued on page 3...

There is a session in the morning and a repeat in the evening giving everyone 2 different opportunities. Home is A PRACTICAL series for parents about how to make faith more alive in your home. The first of 4 sessions is January 13, 9:30 am or 7 pm. The topic is: Breaking Ground: Will Our Children Have Faith? The highlyacclaimed presentation about the National Study on Youth and Religion and its implications for every Catholic parent. It is not necessary to attend all 4 sessions, but we think that you will want to attend. Our parish is only as strong and as holy as the homes of our families. These sessions should be a priority for all parents of children no matter what their age. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak All in the animal kingdom made it through the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Season in good form. All of the Christmas decorations are still intact. Nothing was destroyed. A few treats disappeared and no one is owning up to having taken them. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak would like to thank all who sent them greetings, cards, treats and gifts. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Priestly Vocations Office to strengthen vocations for men to serve as priests, deacons and brothers, and for women to serve as religious sisters. Next Saturday, January 15, the office will host a Day of Discernment with Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The day, for men ages 17 to 55, will feature prayer, reflection, instruction, discussion and fellowship about discerning the priesthood. A discernment weekend will also be held January to allow men ages 18 to 50 considering the diocesan priesthood to experience Sacred Heart Major Seminary firsthand. Throughout the year, the office works as a liaison to Consecrated Communities in the Archdiocese and plans events to promote vocations. Please take a moment to pray for the renewal and strengthening of vocations during National Vocations Awareness Week. Elementary Religious Formation and Sacramental Preparation Popcorn for Priests Monday, January 10, After classes On Monday, January 10 after the 4:30 and 6 pm sessions, we will be selling popcorn for only 50 Fund, a scholarship initiative to support the vocations of future priests, deacons and lay ministers. First Communion Parent Meeting Wednesday, January 19, 9:30 am OR 7 pm National Shrine Conference Center This meeting is for the parents of those children who are already registered as candidates to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist for the first time this spring. We will explore the Mystery of the Eucharist, cover a few important practical details and distribute materials to make individual banners for the first Communion liturgy. To accommodate busy schedules, two meeting times are offered: 9:30 am or 7 pm. At a time when our community needs it most, the Changing Lives Together Initiative will strengthen our parish, and most importantly, bring us closer to one another through fellowship and faith. 12 Together We Can Do More What difference can I make, I am only taken people of humble beginnings and lead them to do profound work in His name. A young virgin of little means became the Blessed Mother. A fisherman left all possessions behind and became an apostle. Over and over again, God has taken the least of us and done great and wonderful things. Think of what you can do with all that you have available to you now. Multiply what you can do alone by all the Catholics in our archdiocese and the results will be astounding. Together, if each of us contributes more of our time, talent and treasure, we can change lives all around us. We can make sure that Shrine is a beacon in our community, drawing those who thirst for redemption into the light of that every child who wishes is able to attend a Catholic school. We can make sure that more priests and lay leaders are equipped with the knowledge they need to bring the Word to those who yearn to hear it. Each person who gives of themselves adds strength to our vision for the Catholic Church in Southeast Michigan. Each who gives, receives so much in return. Not only are you changing the lives of others, you are enriching and changing your own life. strengthen parishes, schools, and the Archdiocese Archdiocesan Case The Archdiocese also has developed its case. Archdiocesan needs include the following: Catholic Education and Faith Formation ($15,000,000): This priority will further our goal of providing every child who wants a Catholic education the opportunity to receive one. The goal of $15 million will strengthen our existing endowment for tuition assistance for Catholic elementary and high school students. This fund has already provided over $50 million of tuition assistance in the last 15 years. In addition to these archdiocesan initiatives, the campaign includes a $13,000,000 allowance for campaign expenses. Strengthening Priestly Formation and Future Leadership ($8,000,000): Providing life-long faith formation, especially continuing opportunities for those who minister in the Church, is an essential duty of the Archdiocese. This priority of Changing Lives Together will help build a fund that will provide opportunities for the continuing education and formation of our priests. In addition, this priority will increase funding for the education and formation of our seminarians, as well as provide resources to assist lay men and women preparing for ministry. Church in the City ($4,000,000): A fund will be established with a mission of providing grants to underwrite parish ministries and programs that are viewed as vital to the ongoing witness, mission and presence of the Catholic Church in our inner cities. Innovative ministry designed to address the unique challenges of the city will be encouraged and supported.

13 Not Equal Gifts, but Equal Sacrifice We will be joining the other parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit as we explore the spirituality of stewardship together. Changing Lives and sharing His word in a way that impacts the lives of others as well as our own. In order to do this simple and profound work, everyone must do their part. Contributing your time, your talent and your treasure is not about giving gifts equal to that of your neighbor, but in giving equal sacrifice. teaching about proportionate giving and the blessings of sacrifice. No gift impresses God in terms of dollar amounts given, number of hours spent or amount of talent provided. God looks at gifts as an extension of the love and obedience with which they are given and proportion of resources from which they come. God, in other words, looks at the heart. Please join us in prayer, study and worship. Begin now to pray that God will guide the National Shrine of the Little Flower individual hearts. Ask God to keep us on the path of obedience and trust. Pray that the Changing Lives Together Initiative will accomplish what it is meant to do: to focus our aware of the privilege of our part in it. Please remember that your experience with personal sacrifice is not a one-time check or contribution, but a profound way of giving through your time, talent and treasure. Our Goals for the Shrine Parish The first priority of the campaign is parish needs. At least 70% of funds raised in the campaign will stay with the parish. The Archdiocese is requesting a target from Shrine Parish of $1.8 Million Dollars. This amount is divided with 70% going to Shrine Parish and 30% going to the Archdiocese. This means $1.25 Million Dollars will come to the Parish and $ will go to the Archdiocese. Once a Parish meets its goal, all funds in excess of the target will be set aside for the Parish. The Shrine goal is to raise $5 Million Dollars. If successful, Shrine would receive $1.25 Million Dollars of the first 1.8 Million Dollars, and then 100% of the next $3.2 Million Dollars, for a total of $4.45 Million Dollars. As a stewardship parish, we have many important priorities that we need to support. In order to lift our community, help those in need, support our Catholic schools and do all the good work we do, we also need to make sure we have a strong parish that is able to pay down our debts/meet our expenses. This will allow us to continue to do all we are doing in His name. With the Changing Lives Together Initiative, we will specifically strengthen the National Shrine of the Little Flower by: Revitalizing the Master Plan, which includes: renovation of the grade school building; construction of a Parish Center; capital improvements to all Parish facilities, including athletic fields; the establishment of a school endowment fund; and continued payments on the Parish bond which funded the construction of the field successful campaign will allow us many options as to how to proceed. Specific decisions on the priority of these needs will be discussed and decided upon as the fund raising occurs. Our Changing Lives Together leadership team is working to discern Shrine top priorities. Over the next few weeks we will be putting together a plan that makes the most sense for all of us and meets our most pressing needs. 15 January 9, 2011 Page 15 Welcoming the new ROMAN MISSALThird Edition The Liturgy of the Word Coming in Advent 2011 At the celebration of the Eucharist we are nourished at two tables: the table of the Word and the table of the Eucharist. Both are necessary. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself is speaking to his people and Christ, present in his own word, is The words of Sacred Scripture are a way God reveals himself to us, the means by which we come to know the depth of God's love for us and the responsibilities entailed in being Christ's followers, members of his Body. What is more, this Word of God proclaimed in the liturgy possesses a special power to bring about in us what it proclaims. At the celebration of the Eucharist God speaks and we respond. First, God speaks through the stories of the Old Testament. We respond with a moment of silence then a sung psalm, in other words, we use the Word of meaning and challenge of the first reading. We respond with a moment of silence. Then the Gospel is proclaimed. There are special honors which we give to the Gospel: for example, the Book of the Gospels has been carried in the Entrance Procession and placed on the altar; just before the Gospel is read the assembly stands and sings Alleluia to welcome Christ present in the Gospel as the deacon or priest carries the Gospel book to the ambo; the Gospel may be incensed before the reading and is kissed at its conclusion. Christ speaking to us. We are invited to open ourselves to the Holy Spirit who will reveal what in our life needs to change so that we could be more like Christ. The Word of God is living and active. Each of us individually, and all of us together, are called to make a response that affects our daily lives. Henri Nouwen tells a wonderful story that may shed some light on this process: A sculptor was chipping away a huge block of marble. A little boy watched him work for many weeks until, finally, he was amazed to see that the sculptor had created a beautiful lion. The little boy ran up to the sculptor with eyes wide with wonder, God is the sculptor. We are block of marble. If we allow the word of God to chip away at us, the possibilities that lie within us will come to vision.
