1 Shrine Herald July 4, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Welcome This weekend we welcome our two new associate pastors, Father Anthony Camilleri and Father Beto Espinoza. Both are priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Father Lang and I are pleased to welcome them to their new home here at the National Shrine. They are both looking forward to becoming deeply involved in the faith life of the parish. Father Bogusław Migut also joined us this past week. Father will be with us throughout the month of July. We are happy to have him with us. He is both a gentleman and a scholar, adding much to our household and to the parish as well. July What happened to the month of June? It came and went so quickly. This weekend we already celebrate Independence Day. It is a good time for us to commit ourselves once again to the principals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all people. Let us pray for our great nation, that God will sanctify our country, protect our military, make us agents of peace and keep us always thankful for the gift of freedom. We pray that we may always remain true to the principles laid down by the founders of our nation and remain united under God. Since Monday, July 5, is the legal observance of the holiday, there will be one Mass at 9 am rather than the normal two masses. The regular schedule will resume on Tuesday. We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, and restful celebration of the Fourth of July weekend. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. continued on page 3... Healing Mass Vocations 2010 On Tuesday, July 13, there will be a Healing Mass at the Church of the Transfiguration, located at Code Rd., in Southfield. Mass will be at 7 pm with the Anointing of the Sick during Mass, followed by healing prayer over the people. Father Alex Kratz will preside. Revised Roman Missal A little over a year from now, in the fall of 2011, the revised English version of the Roman Missal will be introduced for common use in the English speaking world. Is the Mass changing? No it is not. The Latin Roman Missal that is the base for all other translations remains basically unchanged. There are additions made for the saints who have been canonized since the original edition in 1985, and the inclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs and Occasions. The Mass is not changing, and the third edition of the Roman Missal is not a new book. So why will the Mass sound different and why will we be using different words than we have now? The principles for the translation of the Latin text have changed. In 1969 rules were established for translation using the principle of dynamic equivalence that is the principle that when translating from one language to another the meaning of the original text should be emphasized rather than the word for word translation. In 2002, a year after Pope John Paul II introduced the third edition of the Roman Missal; the Congregation for the Divine Worship issued new instructions for the translation of the texts. They called for the translation of the texts to follow the principle of formal equivalency that when translating from one language to another, the word-for-word translation of the original text should be emphasized, rather than the meaning of the text. Personally, I believe this is much more accurate and brings us closer to the mystery of the Eucharist as God intends and not some meaning that we have ascribed to the Mass. It will take some getting used to. The end result will be an improvement. We have a year to prepare and will continually address the subject in a variety of ways. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak As I mentioned last week, Rosie taught Kodi how to swim. She was a very good and patient teacher. First she enticed Kodi into the water. She did not force him. She just demonstrated how much fun she was having in the water. Eventually, he couldn t stand it any longer and got off the dock into the shallow water. Wow, it was fun. He jumped around splashing the water having a really good time. Once he was comfortable. Rosie approached him with her tennis ball. She would let him play with it and then take it back, each time going a little further into the water. Then it happened. All of a sudden, Kodi realized that his feet were no longer touching the bottom. He was swimming. It was great. Now he was swimming with Rosie. Rosie is pretty smart. She can easily out swim Kodi anytime, leaving him in her wake. She taught him how not to drown, but not how to out swim a pro. We live in a country where we are blessed with many freedoms and we fight around the world to protect the freedoms of others. Yet, so many people in this country are stripped of the basic right to live every day. Will you fight for them? They are the unborn babies in danger of abortion, they are the embryos stored in labs waiting to be destroyed for their stem cells, they are the disabled and terminally ill who are made to feel they are inconvenient and their suffering has no meaning, they are the elderly who are told they are putting a strain on the health care system. Someday, they may be you. The history of our country has been forever changed by those who have not been given the right to live or whose life has been cut short. What do you suppose our forefathers would say about giving people the right to choose yet depriving others the right to live? Are we really independent and free? The Manhattan Declaration: The Global Christian Community As a Christian community, it is important to remember our brothers and sisters of all ages and of all nations, not just those close to home. Around the globe, cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing, the abandonment of the aged, racial oppression and discrimination, and the persecution of believers of all faiths, among other travesties, appeal to our Christian community s truly consistent ethic of love and life for all humans in all circumstances. The Manhattan Declaration was drafted to bring about a movement of Christians who will stand together alongside other men and women of goodwill to advance and defend the issues we hold dear. 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Religious Formation Family Activities Vacation Bible School 205 children had a great time at High Seas Expedition this past week. We learned that God s Word is true, God s Word is comforting, God s Word is surprising, God s Word is life-changing and God s Word is for everyone! We had live music, made crafts, played games, acted out Bible stories and watched the adventures of Chadder the Chipmunk. Watch for pictures next week of our journey on the High Seas! Preschool Religious Formation Register now for Preschool Religious Formation We are now accepting preschool registrations for the upcoming fall for those potty trained children who will be at least 3 by December 1 and will not be starting kindergarten yet. For more information or to get a registration form, please contact Janie Lynch at jlynch@shrinechurch.com or Elementary Religious Formation Register Now for the Religious Formation Year Registration forms have been sent home to all currently enrolled grades P-8 after-school Religious Formation families. Please return completed registrations by May 14. If you are new to the program or would like to register a new sibling, please contact our office at rcramer@shrinechurch.com or to get a registration form. Programs meet on the following days and times: Preschool (ages 3 & 4), Sundays during 9 am Mass in the Church Youth Room. Elementary (K-6), Mondays from 4:30-5:30 pm or 6-7 pm at Shrine Catholic Grade School. Grades 7 & 8, Mondays 6:15 7:30 pm at Shrine Catholic Academy. High School Youth Ministry (9-12), Sundays from 7 9 pm in the Church Youth Room. The Preschool Religious Formation and High School Youth Ministry programs are designed for all parish families while the K-8 programs are geared specifically to public school or home-schooled children. Sacramental Preparation Children ages 6-16 who wish to receive Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation must receive religious formation for a minimum of two consecutive years in a Catholic School or after-school formation program. Children who attend Shrine Catholic Schools or our after-school programs will automatically receive sacrament registration materials to complete before starting grades 2 and 7. All others must contact the Religious Formation Office at Examples of children in this group include students at other Catholic schools, children who are older than the typical age/grade, or non-catholics wishing to become Catholic. Youth Service Team Opportunities Angels Place Miracle League Mondays during the summer, 5:15 to 6:30 pm Miracle League Field, Evergreen, Southfield Come experience a summer pastime in a way you never have before! Volunteers are needed to aid Angels Place residents (adults with developmental disabilities) with their softball league. Confirmation candidates, along with a parent, are needed to assist and encourage the residents as they bat, run bases, and play the field. Bring the whole family and cheer the team on! Also watch for summer adventures including Cedar Point and a Tiger's Family Night. To help raise money for our mission trip and our trip to World Youth Day, Cross Connections is collecting old cell phones (no accessories) and used ink jet cartridges (no laser or toner cartridges please). He is so faithful and continues to pour His Spirit out on us at the Tuesday night prayer meetings. God encourages us to praise Him. On this July 4th weekend, Jesus cautions that power is easily misused to dominate or manipulate others.
