1 Shrine Herald May 29, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Graduation Congratulations to all those who are graduating at this time of year. This past week we celebrated the graduation of Shrine Catholic High School Seniors. In the coming weeks we will celebrate the graduation of the Shrine Catholic Academy eighth grade students and the promotion of the Shrine Catholic Grade School sixth grade students. Many other parish members are graduating from area Catholic schools, public schools, universities and colleges. Our best wishes to them all. Congratulations to their parents, families, and those who have supported them in their education. Ascension The Feast of the Ascension or Our Lord Jesus Christ in most of the United States, including the province of Michigan, is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Therefore here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower, the Ascension will be celebrated at the Masses on the weekend of June 4 and 5. Thursday, June 2, is not a Holy Day. Memorial Day Monday, May 30, is Memorial Day. As is our custom, Mass on legal holidays is celebrated at 9 am. There will be no Mass at 6:30 or 8:30 am. The only Mass on the holiday will be at 9 am. Pilgrimage Father Tomek Maka, Father Siaosi Patau, and I are leading a pilgrimage from October 6 to 21 this year. We will be going to Fatima, Santiago de Compostela, Assisi, and Rome. Along the way we will visit sites in Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Visits to significant churches, daily Mass, and hopefully a papal audience are all part of the pilgrimage. I am really looking forward to this pilgrimage. It is continued on page 3... We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Detailed information packages are available at the reception desk; they are a bright lime color. Parish Council Every year on Pentecost names are drawn from those submitted to fill the vacancies on the Parish Council. Members serve for three year terms. If you would like to nominate someone, please make sure they are willing to serve and submit their name and information to any member of the parish council or to the parish office. Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak Here is a little tip regarding Kodiak. DO NOT stare him in the eyes. If he is out in the yard, or out for a walk with me, pretend he is not there. Look past him or away from him, but do not look him directly in they eyes. It is good to have eye contact with people. Dogs on the other hand, especially dogs like Kodiak, interpret eye contact as aggression and it becomes an issue of dominance. Some people will come to the window by the dog yard and stare at him. This causes him to become agitated and people stare harder and he becomes more agitated. It is a vicious circle to be avoided. Come Support Our Teens! C.R.E.W. 5 May 29, 2011 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Early Birds: We Need You!!! I envy you. You are at your best when most of us are at our worst. You are bright eyed and raring to go when we don't even want anyone to turn on the lights. I'd like you to wake up a little early and spend some time with your best friend, Jesus. I have a few hours open at the Adoration Chapel that would be perfect for an early bird like you. You'll find that your Adoration Hour soon becomes the highlight of your week. Think of it, you and your best friend one on one, talking about the things that are most important to you. Life is a puzzle. Jesus has the answer. Fact is, Jesus is the answer and He'll show you how to put all the pieces together to make a heavenly picture. Stop by the Adoration Chapel any time to say, "Hello". Your best friend is waiting for you. Why not call me, Marie Lama, at , and make a commitment. There are special early bird hours waiting for you: Monday, 1 and 5 am; Tuesday, 4 am; Thursday, 4, 5, 7 am; and Friday, 4 am. With freedom comes responsibility. How have we used our freedoms? Have we used them to spread the Gospel of Life in a society where a human being only has dignity if they are convenient or wanted? Have we used them to protect those in danger of being aborted or killed by euthanasia? Have we used them to speak for those who have no voice? Have we used them to reach out to those in despair and feel no other option than to choose death? Have we used them to educate those who feel that we, not God, have the right to take the life of others? Have we used them to pray for the conversion of hearts; conversion of our politicians, doctors and educators who have the ability to influence laws and culturally sentiment on life issues? Have we used them to courageously witness our beliefs to our neighbors? From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more (Luke 12:48). God has entrusted all of us and our country with many gifts. Are we using these gifts as we should? Make Your World a More Beautiful Place this Spring! 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Roamin with Rosie This week, we join a game of hide- and- seek being played by Rosie, Kodi and their cousins, Howie, Charlie and Bella. Kodi has been it and every dog has been found except Rosie. The dogs search for 5 minutes. Let s listen in: Kodi (frustrated): Come on, Rosie. Where are you? We give up. Howie: Yeah, Rosie. Come on! Charlie: Where could she be? I knew she was good at the game and knows a lot about this building, but I never knew she was this good. Bella: I don t know, but I am starting to get worried. Carlito comes flying in with something in his mouth. Carlito: Hey! Which one of you hot dogs put an envelope in my cage? All: It wasn t us. What s in it? Carlito: (shreds open the envelope with his beak). It says here that if we want to find Rosie, then we need to go to the original mailroom of the church. Kodi: The old mailroom? Where was that? Carlito: I don t know, but it says that Father Coughlin used to get close to a million pieces of mail. It also says that the answer to last week s Roamin with Rosie question was St. Therese of the Child Jesus. Kodi: Is this some kind of joke? Did Rosie write this? Howie: Maybe someone dog knapped her! Bella: I don t know, but I m scared. Howie: Me too. And how are we going to find the old mailroom? Rosie is the one who knows all about this place with all the roaming she does! What has happened to Rosie? Is this just a joke? Or is she really in trouble? Will the dogs ever see their friend again? Can you help the animals by finding the original mailbox on the outside of the National Shrine? If you can, then the location to them at rosie@shrinechurch.com. Don t delay! They need your help right away! A Reminder Whenever your address, phone number, , or family status changes, please be sure to contact the parish office and update your information with us. It is critical that we keep our parishioner records up-to-date! Thank you!

But in reality it is much more than simply the absence of sexual relations. Chastity calls for purity of mind as well as body. If we are not working to develop a pure heart or a pure mind, then our bodily actions will reflect this. If we have no control over our desires or passions, then we cannot be trusted in either the big or the small things. We will remain slaves of our own passions and weak in spirit. If we cannot say no, then our yes will mean nothing. ~ Episcopal Commission for Doctrine, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Pastoral Letter to Young People on Chastity (January 2011)

Missionary Intention: That the Lord may grant the Church in China the capacity to persevere in fidelity to the Gospel and to grow in unity. Vocations The Spirit of truth is within you. You are not alone (John 14: 15 21). Reflect on how God is calling you at this time in your life. If you think God is calling you to be a priest, call Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations, at or visit A Family Perspective In today s Gospel, Jesus prepared his disciples for his departure. Family life is a series of departures. As we mature and grow older we constantly transition from the familiar to the new unknown. Today Jesus assures us we are not alone in these transitions: I will not leave you orphans.
