1 Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI June 9, 2013 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Lourdes and Lisieux in October Father Tomek Maka and I will be leading a pilgrimage to Lourdes traveling through France to Lisieux, the home of Saint Thérèse the Little Flower and then on to Paris. The pilgrimage will have special celebrations of Mass along the way. We will also visit wine country and the beaches of Normandy. There is a great group going and it will be a very special time of fun, faith, and prayer. There are still a few (less than 10) places available. If you are interested you can check out the program online at or by calling Mrs. Vicki Holtyn at the parish office, , ext Summertime With sixth grade promotion this Monday evening and school ending this week, things change over into Summertime mode at Shrine. There are a couple of things I would like to point out regarding the church in the Summer. Please DO NOT prop the church doors open and leave them open. It only defeats the climate control system in the church and is very costly. Even though it is summer, be mindful of your manner of dressing when coming to church. This is especially true for those exercising liturgical roles as lector and extraordinary ministers of communion. Parish Office We have recently changed the schedule for the parish office. The office is closed from 12 to 1 for lunch each day. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 8:30 pm with the exception of the lunch hour. The office is open on Saturday from 9 am to 2:30 pm. The office will now be open on Sunday morning from 9 am until 12:30 pm. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Corpus Christi Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time I would like to express my gratitude to the First Communicants who came last Sunday, the Feast of Corpus Christi, to lead our Eucharistic Procession. They were an inspiration to us all. It was a wonderful event for all who attended. The ice cream social after the procession was a big hit. Thanks to the Youth Group for helping to put it on. The most common comment heard that evening was, This is great, we should do it more often. continued on page 3...

My experience of bringing Holy Communion to homebound parishioners is that they find the visit very nourishing and helpful in their journey to remain faithful to God s will as they experience sickness or frailty. Some parishioners bring Holy Communion in a pyx to a homebound family member after Sunday Mass each week. It is wonderful for couples or families to pray together in this way. We are grateful for these National Shrine Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who have been faithfully serving the frail and homebound on a weekly basis: Rita Areddy, Lou Lim, Jamie Kelly, Joan Fernane, Patrick Messing, Tom Dolf, Kevin and Barbara Norris, Bruce Bauer, Sharon Hoolehan, Mary Butler, Bev Causby, Holly Ruhle, Bob Crowley, Mary Uhan, Ginny Gamber, and Judith Mikich. Think of this... If one of your gifts is to pray with someone and bring Holy Communion to them after you leave a daily or Sunday Mass, please talk with me about becoming one of our regular Eucharistic visitors to the homebound. You will not only bring the Body of Christ to someone waiting, but you will be a special servant of the Body of Christ! Sister Noreen , ext. 411 Update from Jim Jirkans Jim and Barbara s son, Paul, had two successful surgeries for the serious brain aneurysm. He is at home (Cincinnati) and is resting 20 hours per day. His recovery will be many months. For now, Jim and Barbara are his caregivers as well as caring for the children M F. The family is grateful for your continued prayers. Office of Priestly Vocations Pray for the Camino Pilgrims! Buen Camino! This is the greeting that will most regularly be received by the thirty-seven men who will be travelling along the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) with Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations. The translation of this greeting is, Good Way and is the traditional blessing for Camino pilgrims. The pilgrimage will be from June 10-19, 2013 and the group is composed of 28 discerners, 5 seminarians, 3 priests, and 1 Bishop. The support and prayers of the people from the Archdiocese of Detroit has been overwhelming and much appreciated. Be assured of their prayers for you during the pilgrimage. Learn more about the pilgrimage and follow them along the Way at their blog: vocationcamino.wordpress.com. Contact Fr. 3 June 9, 2013 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Audit The Archdiocese of Detroit audits the financial records of every parish. Ideally it should happen every 4 years. Here at the National Shrine we are just finishing the audit, the first one in 16 years. The preliminary report shows that there is nothing seriously out of line. Thanks to the hard work of our Finance Council and Mrs. Safranski our CFO, we have made great strides. The majority of the areas that need to be addressed are in relationship to proper reporting and controls in the area of fundraising on the part of groups within the parish. A set of policies and reporting forms have been established to assure that the necessary corrections are made. I want to thank everyone for their cooperation especially the officers of parent groups and other fundraising groups. Rosie, Carlito and Lord Stanley A few times I have mentioned that Rosie is experiencing difficulties and weakness that come with age. Father Camilleri reminds us that she is the equivalent of 90 years old. This past week she had a spell and was quite sick. Thanks to the expert care of Dr. Jim Mast at North Main Animal Hospital she is doing better. When people see Lord Stanley they often ask where Rosie is. Well at her age, she likes to rest more and conserves her energy. 5 June 9, 2013 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Give me, O Lord, invincible hope; teach me to hope against all hope, teach me to hope with all my strength." "The least act of hope, of trust in God, made in the midst of trials, in a state of interior or exterior desolation, is worth far more than a thousand acts made in times of joy and prosperity. When we are suffering in mind or body, when we are experiencing the void of abandonment and helplessness, when we find ourselves prey to the repugnances of rebellions of nature which would like to throw off the yoke of the Lord, we cannot pretend to have the comforting feeling of hope, of confidence; often we may even experience the opposite sentiment, and yet, even in this state we can make acts of hope and confidence which are not felt but willed. The theological virtues are practiced essentially by the will....when the act must be made by the will alone, then this exercise is dry and cold, but is not for this reason of less merit; on the contrary, it is even more meritorious and therefore gives more glory to God. " - Divine Intimacy Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. Open Holy Hours: Monday, 2 pm; Thursday, Saturday, 2 pm, 6 pm; Wednesday, 4 pm; Friday, Noon. What a powerful witness they made, dressed in their Communion attire, with Msgr. Easton holding the Blessed Sacrament following. Our reverent little children truly enjoyed the ice cream social that followed. The screams and giggles could be heard throughout the neighborhood as the children enjoyed the beautiful weather running around the grass. So much for the white dresses and suits! It was a perfect way to end their sacrament prep year! Thank you to all who participated. A huge thank you goes to Christine Wist and the Shrine youth group for hosting the social and to Kathie Dorsch for all her behind the scenes help! In his 1987 encyclical on Mary, John Paul II's papal writing draws on Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition to explore Mary's place in the life of the Church and in Catholic devotion. Evangelization: Discernment & Evangelization Discerning when and how to share your faith story with another is an important part of evangelization. To proclaim randomly and without thought may turn people away. To be shy about being a witness of God s action in your life limits the power of the message. Pope Benedict XVI writes, A Christian knows when it is time to speak of God and when it is better to say nothing and to let love alone speak. He knows that God is love (cf. 1 Jn 4:8) and that God's presence is felt at the very time when the only thing we do is to love. (Deus Caritas Est, 31)

10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Preschool As our preschool year comes to an end, we thank God for the many blessings He so generously gives. During the month of May, we helped the children reflect on their many experiences this school year and celebrate their growth and learning. These past weeks we sang Rain, Rain, Go Away as we learned about the water cycle. We were paleontologist and studies dinosaurs by observing fossils and bones. Then we discovered that birds aren t the only ones that lay eggs, as we studied birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and fish. Our classrooms were decorated by the children with pictures and collages of butterflies and caterpillars. We thoroughly enjoyed an author study of Eric Carle. We even tried our hand at making our own paintedpaper collages. Many of Carle s books are about insects and God s world of animals. Our favorite story was A House for Hermit Crab. Just like the hermit crab, our 4 year olds are growing and moving on to a bigger school. We have been taking care of God s world by recycling and reusing. We made musical instruments out of recycled items from home. Our 14 caterpillars formed chrysalis and after several weeks became butterflies! As we released them into God s world, we blessed each one as they flew up into the sky so freely. Just like our butterflies, we say goodbye with blessings to all of our children for the Summer. Mrs. Oldani

13 June 9, 2013 Page 13 About the Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay men and women in the Catholic Church, with about 3 million active members in almost every country of the world. The Legion of Mary has been active in the United States (USA) since 1931, has been approved by 7 Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give Glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Members of the Legion of Mary become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service in a family atmosphere. Works include door-to-door evangelization, parishioner visitation, visitation of the sick or aged, Catholic education, visiting the newly baptized, visiting families, and meeting the other spiritual needs of the parish community. Legionaries are under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the pastor. The Legion of Mary is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor. Members meet weekly for prayer, planning and discussion. Then members do two hours of definite work each week in pairs. The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who: faithfully practice their religion; are animated by the desire to fulfill their role in the Catholic Church's apostolate through membership of the Legion; are prepared to fulfill the duties which Active and Auxillary Membership of the Legion involves. 15 June 9, 2013 Page 15 Year of Faith The Tradition that comes from the apostles makes progress in the Church, with the help of the Holy Spirit. There is a growth in insight into the realities and words that are being passed on. This comes in various ways. It comes through the contemplation and study of believers who ponder these things in their hearts. It comes from the intimate sense of spiritual realities which they experience. And it comes from the preaching of those who have received, along with the right of succession in the episcopate, the sure charism of truth. Thus, as the centuries go by, the Church is always advancing towards the plentitude of divine truth, until eventually the words of God are fulfilled in her. Dei Verbum 8 Question Do I take time to contemplate the words of Scripture and pay full attention to the homily at Mass? Prayer Lord Jesus, let me know myself and know you, And desire nothing, save only you. Let me be willing to obey for the sake of you. Let me cling to nothing, save only you. Look upon me, that I may love you. Call me, that I may see you, And forever enjoy you. Amen.
