1 Shrine Herald June 19, 2011 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Father Prus Next Sunday, June 26, everyone is celebrating Father Ed Prus 50th anniversary as a priest. The celebration begins with a 1 pm Mass at St. James Parish in Ferndale where Father is currently in residence. After the Mass there will be a reception with food and dancing to celebrate the joy of this great occasion. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. For more information, to RSVP, or to volunteer to help go online to Father James Lowe Some time ago, Deacon Jim Lowe wrote to me with the following request: You may remember me. I was a Life Teen Core member in 2001 (at Shrine). I am now finishing my last year of seminary and will be ordained a priest on June 11 in Ottawa, ON. I would like to come back to the National Shrine to celebrate a thanksgiving Mass. I actually had a powerful encounter with the Lord at the National Shrine through the Eucharist. This is what began my journey toward ordination. It is for this reason that I would like to request celebrating a thanksgiving Mass on Sunday, June 26 at the Sunday Evening Mass. It is the solemnity of Corpus Christi. I thought that would be most fitting. Father Lowe is a member of the Companions of the Cross out of Ottawa, Canada and served as a deacon in Houston, Texas. Father will celebrate the 6 pm Mass on Sunday, June 26. Pilgrimage Father Tomek Maka, Father Siaosi Patau, and I are leading a pilgrimage from October 6 to 21 this year. We will be going to Fatima, Santiago de Compostela, Assisi, and Rome. Along the way we will visit sites in Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Visits to significant churches, daily Mass, and hopefully a papal Royal Oak, MI The Most Holy Trinity audience are all part of the pilgrimage. I am really looking forward to this pilgrimage. There are very few places still available with the group. Those who went to the pilgrimages in the Holy Land and to Poland last year can tell you how wonderful they were. If you are at all interested, please contact the parish office. Shrine Catholic Alumni Next weekend is a big weekend for all Shrine Catholic Alumni. There is a golf outing, a Bar BQ, class reunions, a fun run and more. Please refer to this edition of the Shrine Herald for more detailed information. continued on page 3...

Sisters of Charity Associates in Mission The Sisters of Charity have a long history at the National Shrine, having established the Shrine Catholic Schools many years ago at the invitation of Father Coughlin. Our congregation of Sisters, like so many others, also has a lay membership program that invites men and women into a special covenant with the Sisters of Charity. This special relationship strengthens the spirituality and gifts of vowed religious and the covenanted laity, mutually. Currently, we, Sisters of Charity have 185 Associates in Mission throughout the United States who are deepening their faith and being attentive to living the Mission and Charism of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. We, Sisters of Charity urged by the love of Christ and in the spirit of our founder, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, strive to live Gospel values. We choose to act justly, to build loving relationships, to share our resources with those in need, and to care for all creation. Our beloved Carol Hoolehan was an Associate in Mission, as is her husband Jack, along with Randy Husaynu and Jamie Kelly. I am inviting others of you who may be interested to talk with me or Sister Alicia, or one of these Associates. 3 June 19, 2011 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Rosie, Carlito, and Kodiak I was away from June 8 to 15. Rosie stayed at the rectory and had it all to herself. I think at first she was happy not to have Kodi around, but then she found it rather boring. Carlito was his ordinary self. He is hoping that now that I am home he will get to go outside in that big aviary in the courtyard. Kodi had the time of his life. His trainer, Karen, took him on walks, hikes, visits to a bunch of university students, and to a dog park. As I write this, I wonder if he will be happy to see me when I get home or not. God so loved the world that He gave up His beloved Son for us. You created us out of love. You became flesh out of love for us. You humbled Yourself and lived among us out of love. You gave us the Gospel and Your life out of love. You allowed Yourself to be crucified, to die on the cross for us out of love. You do all things out of love. In the inexpressible heart of Your love you give us Yourself in the Eucharist so as to quench our thirst for love and, above all, to teach and enable us to love the Father and the Blessed Trinity, which is eternal fire and the source of love. Jesus, I love You in the Eucharist, which overflows with blood by virtue of Your infinite love, which surpasses man's understanding. I love You with the love of Your own Heart. I love you with the Holy Spirit of love-the Spirit out which the Eucharist sprang like a fountain....i wish to lose myself in Your love, that all may come to know and love You. 7 June 19, 2011 Page 7 Lending Library The Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is at the heart of the Catholic faith. Sadly, recent polls indicate that many Catholics no longer believe in that. A Key To the Doctrine of the E u c h a r i s t b y A b b o t V a n i e r could help people to have a better understanding about it. This book was recommended by Cardinal Avery Dulles as "one of the few classics in Catholic theology composed in English...This book should never be out of print." Peter Kreef wrote the preface for this edition, and said, "I have seldom read such a convincing, clear and comprehensive study in Eucharistic theology." Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at or JoAn Gilleran at Life Matters As we celebrate Father s Day, we should also honor St. Joseph. God chose St. Joseph to be the foster father of our Lord; to protect him and provide for his well-being. Like St. Joseph, all fathers are charged with protecting, guiding, teaching, and loving their children; this is both an awesome responsibility and a tremendous gift. In some countries, Father s Day is celebrated on St. Joseph s Day so it s fitting that as we honor our earthly fathers today, we also pray to St. Joseph asking for his guidance and for intercession from his Son. Let us also pray for the fathers who are victims of an abortion, that they may be healed from the pains of lost fatherhood. Missionary Intention: That the Holy Spirit may bring forth from our communities numerous missionary vocations, willing to fully consecrate themselves to spreading the Kingdom of God. A Family Perspective As the Father sent his son into the world, so parents send their children into the world so that the world might be saved. This is the missionary role of the Christian family. Your family is a school where your children develop convictions which enable them to make a difference in the world. - Bud Ozar Vocations God so loved the world, He gave His only Son (John 3:16 18).
