1 Shrine Herald June 27, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Augustinian Missionaries This weekend Father Tony Burrascano OSA is with us. Father Tony is an Augustinian Father of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova and will be sharing the work of the Augustinian Missionaries with us. The Augustinians minister up and down the East Coast of the United States, as well as internationally in Peru, Japan and South Africa. They take their spirituality and way of life from Saint Augustine of Hippo, 5th century bishop and Father of the Church. To that end, they carry on Augustine's legacy of journeying together to Christ. Father Tony invites us to join the Augustinians on this shared spiritual journey - as friends and supporters of their ministries, as volunteers, and as Augustinians carrying on Augustine's message - Christ's message - of a life centered upon God. The missionary Cooperation envelopes in the pews can be used to support this mission. All of the proceeds from the envelopes will be shared directly with the Augustinians. You can use the envelopes this weekend or next. Father Bogusław Migut Father Bogusław, a professor of theology from the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland, will be with us beginning this week for the month of July. Father Bogusław is also an author, and is working on an international conference for priests that will take place in Rome next year. One of Father s goals is to become more familiar with the English language. We are most fortunate to have him with us for the next month. During the month of August, Father Jarosław Kowalczyk will be with us. Father We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jarek will be on holiday from his parish in Poland and wants to practice his English in a parish setting. We are fortunate to have both of these priests spend time with us. I am sure everyone will extend a warm National Shrine welcome to them. For those of you who were asking about the Polish Connection, you can see that it is still there and functioning. continued on page 3...

I wish to thank everyone for their kind expression of thanks and support last Sunday and on the last days as my assignment at the National Shrine comes to an end. I would also like to extend a special thank you to the National Shrine Ladies Guild for sponsoring the wonderful reception! I thank our Lord for the privilege of being in your midst and serving you for the past few years. May God be praised in all things and may He reward you for your kindness! - Fr. Kris Nowak Dear friends and parishioners of the National Shrine: It has been three wonderful years that I spent at the National Shrine. The time of assignment has come to an end. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for welcoming me to the parish family. I experienced lots of kind words, comments, and compliments from so many of you. I appreciate the generosity of your hearts and prayers so much. Many of you asked me and wonder about my upcoming future. I will be taking time off for personal reasons at this time after consultation and approval of Archbishop Vigneron. I would ask you to keep me in your prayers during my time of discernment. - Fr. Pawel Kaczmarczyk Archdiocese of Detroit 2010 With six weeks completed in this year s CSA drive, we are at 80% of our goal, or about $160,000, from 778 contributors. There are still about 800 cards that were mailed out or picked that have not been returned. This weekend, you can drop your card off in one of the Heritage Hall CSA boxes, or as always you can return your card by dropping it off in the regular Sunday collection; you can drop it off at the parish office, or you can send it in using the U.S. Mail service. Even if you are unable to support the CSA at this time, please indicate that on the card and return it to us. You can tell the underlying theme is to return your card. Your help and contribution is greatly appreciated as we push toward our goal. We re getting close, but we really need your help to push us over the top. Thank you.

3 June 27, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Week of Transition This week will be a big week of transition as Father Pawel and Father Krys move out of the rectory. Please keep them in your prayers. At the same time, Father Anthony and Father Beto will be moving in. Please keep them in your prayers as well. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak This past weekend, Rosie taught Kodi how to swim. More about that next week. However, Rosie had her own little escapade while at the lake. When we went in for dinner, Rosie stayed outside swimming. At the end of our meal we heard a strange voice from the front door asking Is this your dog? There was a young couple at the door with Rosie on a rope leash. Embarrassed, I asked what she had done. They pointed way down the lake and said We live way over there. We were having our Bar-B-Q when this very friendly dog swam over and got out of the lake. We had no idea where she had come from or how long she had been swimming. She greeted everyone and then joined in by helping herself to a bratwurst. We enjoyed playing with her but knew she belonged to someone. She is such a nice dog. So we tied the rope to her and asked Where is home? and she brought us all the way back to here down the road. She knew exactly where she was going. The people were really nice and even invited Rosie to visit again if she wanted. 5 June 27, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Under the benign influence of the Divine Presence, the natural should submit to the supernatural, our souls doing their utmost to lead this higher life, to grow more rapidly in this holier love. With our inward and outward activity under the complete control of Christ, love-the principle of His working within us-will be the law of our relations with our fellowmen. Preoccupied with the absolute certainty of Christ's Presence, we will be filled with religious fervor. We will sanctify others, for Christ within us will always ennoble the world around us. How distressing, then, it is that we human habitations of the Eucharistic God speak and act so often from natural impulse. The natural, the carnal, is powerless to uplift, to beget sympathy, for it is the nature of natural things to resist each other. man will never yield to, much less be inspired by, what is no better than himself. His dissatisfaction with the finite -his searching but fruitless seeking for happiness without alloy, proves that he will be influenced and ruled only by God, or by him who represents God. God alone can appease the ravenous hunger of the human heart. " - Fr. Why are so many people experiencing depression today? What are your habits? How would you like your life to change? Is Jesus still relevant? Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations at or visit our Web site at A Family Perspective The Gospel reports Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem and his disciples could not dissuade Him from this commitment. The life changing commitments of marriage and parenting bind a family together. No one puts a hand to the plow and looks back because commitments set our face to a future we create. - Bud Ozar Manhattan Declaration: The Sanctity of Life Our commitment to the sanctity of life is not a matter of partisan loyalty, for we recognize that in the thirty six years since Roe v. Wade, elected officials and appointees of both major political parties have been complicit in giving legal sanction to what Pope John Paul II described as the culture of death. We call on all officials in our country, elected and appointed, to protect and serve every member of our society, including the most marginalized, voiceless, and vulnerable among us. These are words from the Manhattan Declaration, drafted to bring about a movement of Christians who will stand together alongside other men and women of goodwill to advance the sanctity of human life, rebuild and revitalize the marriage culture, and protect religious liberty. Archbishop Allen Vigneron encourages all faithful to learn more about the Declaration, and the values it espouses, at manhattan.
