1 Shrine Herald August 8, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton The Assumption Next Sunday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Normally, if this feast falls during the week, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. This year, the feast falls on a Sunday. On all Sundays, all members of the Church who are physically able are obliged to attend Mass. This is not an option, but a responsibility to be taken very seriously. Attending Sunday Mass, be it the Vigil Mass on Saturday or the Mass of the day on Sunday, should be the first and most important priority for us. It is more important than any other activity we could be involved in on the weekend. Everything else should be planned around our attending Mass and not the other way around. Since the feast falls on a Sunday, the readings and prayers next weekend will be those of the feast. There are special readings for the vigil Mass on Saturday and other readings for the Mass of the day on Sunday. This feast celebrates the fact that after her death, the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up into the Kingdom of Heaven. In this, she is a precursor of the entire Church. Where she has gone we also hope to go. After our life on earth, we hope to be joined with the angels and saints in the Kingdom of Heaven awaiting the resurrection of the body at the end of time. Mary glorified and assumed into heaven in and through her son the Lord Jesus Christ, is the sign and hope of what we shall become. Dream Cruise Party A week from this coming Friday, we will have our annual Parish Dream Cruise Party (August 20). There will be fun, food, music, and cars galore. It is always a fun time and a chance to share with members of the parish of all ages. We at the rectory, animals Royal Oak, MI Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time included, will be looking forward to seeing you at this fun event. Mark Your Calendar Monday September 13 at 7 pm a parish wide event will take place. This includes all members of the parish as well as those involved in parish schools and the religious formation program. This event is a must for everyone. It will set the tone and the pace for the entire upcoming year. More details will come soon. continued on page 3...

3 August 8, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Summer Last Sunday before one of the Masses, one of the altar servers commented, happened to July and August as vacation months? Then, the more I reflected on the statement, I think the server was correct. In August we already have orientation meetings, training for sports teams, faculty retreats, the first day of school, and more. Everyone wants to get a jump on things. We move ahead faster and faster and cram more and more into our busy schedules. I know we have to do a lot of these things. I would suggest that we do them with a slow and steady pace. Take time out whenever possible. Slow the treadmill presence can put all that other stuff into the proper perspective. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak Last weekend Rosie spent a good amount of time swimming in the North moved on Monday. Kodi is off to Boot Camp and all reports are good so far. Carlito is attempting to add to his limited vocabulary. All three of them are excited about this EVENT on 9/13/2010. Life Matters Have you ever thought of abortion as genocide? The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform is calling it just that in their Genocide Awareness Project (GAP). GAP is a traveling photo-mural exhibit which compares the contemporary genocide of abortion to historically recognized forms of genocide. It visits university campuses around the country to show as many students as possible what abortion actually does to unborn children and get them to think about abortion in a broader historical context. Throughout history, we as a society have a sad legacy of dehumanizing those who get in our way or have something we want. Each time, the perpetrators of the genocide started by dehumanizing the victim class - calling them non-persons, parasites, sub-human, animals, etc. In Germany, the Nazis made it lawful to kill Jews. In the United States, slave owners and racists made it lawful to abuse and even kill slaves. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the Roe vs. Wade decision, made it lawful to kill unborn children for any reason or no reason at all. Even if some of the motives are different, the end result is the same a defenseless class of people targeted for killing and a large number of dead victims. But also part of history, are a number of courageous men and women who fought to end the killing of Jews genocide victims. Visit some pro-life websites: School Backpack Collection The National Shrine of the Little Flower Knights of Columbus Council #12408 again is collecting backpacks for the children that are helped by the Oakland County Criminal Justice Ministry. Sister Peggy Devaney, IHM, is the long-time chaplain of the jail ministry. Now through Sunday, August 15, there will be barrels in Heritage Hall by the door into the church and at the Northwood ramp door. During the weekend Masses, please place the backpack in the barrel and a member of the council will make sure it gets to the right place. During the week, the backpacks should be brought to the church office. We are looking for new backpacks only. Please consider putting pens, pencils, and other school supplies inside. 7 August 8, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library A r e y o u h a v i n g problems remembering things? Kevin Vost has written a book, Memorize the Faith (And Most Anything Else): Using the Methods of the Great Catholic Medieval Memory Masters that may prove intriguing. "Even saints can't live by truths they can't remember. That's why, over 700 years ago, St. Thomas Aquinas devised a method to help him recall the teachings of our Faith. it's so simple and easy that, over the years, countless Christians have relied on it... and so can you! Refining techniques taught by the ancient philosophers, St. Thomas created a mental 'memory mansion' and a way to store information in its 'rooms', where it remains, fresh and accessible, until you return to retrieve it. Because it's a system that can be used to remember anything, Aquinas's method is more powerful and more flexible than all the memory tricks we learned as school children. No wonder Dr. Kevin Vost has used a 'memory mansion' for years now to help him recall names, dates, birthdays, grocery lists, and a host of other things, including (just for fun, and in forward and backward order) random fifty-digit numbers called out to him by students in his college classes." (Back cover) Does that sound interesting? (Section 1, Catholic). Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at or JoAn Gilleran at A Family Perspective servant waited for the master to return. Waiting is a normal part of family life. We wait for a up. Later we wait for teenagers to return home safely. Finally, we wait alone anticipating a call or visit from an adult child. Waiting is sacred time, for even in the waiting we are connected. - Bud Ozar Sunday, August 8 Masses 7:30, 9:00, 10:45 am; 12:30, and 6:00 pm Lending Library CC-C 10 am Discalced Carmelites Secular CC-SH 12:45 pm Rosary For The Unborn AC 5 pm 6 th Grade Boys Basketball GS Gym 7 pm Monday, August 9 Masses 6:30, 8;30 am Altar Server Training Church 7 pm Ladies Guild Meeting CC-A 7 pm RCIA for Children CC-B 7 pm Legion of Mary Devotional Meeting CC-B 7:30 pm Tuesday, August 10 Masses 6:30, 8;30 am Mother of Perpetual Help Devotions STC 6:45 pm Altar Server Training Church 7 pm Knights of Columbus Meeting CC-SH 7 pm Vocations Committee Meeting CC-A 7 pm ENDOW Mulieris Dignitatem CC-B 7 pm Love of God Prayer Group Meeting STC 8 pm Wednesday, August 11 Masses 6:30, 8:30 am CC-B 6:15 am Saint Therese Devotions STC 7 pm Events Calendar Thursday, August 12 Masses 6:30, 8:30 am Hispanic Group Meeting YR 6 pm SCRIP Gift Card Sales HH-EW 6:30 pm Altar Server Training Church 7 pm Friday, August 13 Masses 6:30, 8:30 am Lending Library CC-C 9:15 am CC-SH 9:30 am Saturday, August 14 Mass 8:30 am Confessions 3-4 pm, 5:30-6:15 pm Sunday Liturgy 4:30, 6:30 pm Master Plan Oversight Committee Meeting HH-BR 10 am Sunday, August 15 Masses 7:30, 9:00, 10:45 am; 12:30, and 6:00 pm Lending Library CC-C 10 am Rosary For The Unborn AC 5 pm 6 th Grade Boys Basketball GS Gym 7 pm Events Calendar Location Guide A Academy AC Adoration Chapel, Coughlin Building CC-SH Conference Center, Seton Hall CC-A Conference Center, Room A CC-B Conference Center, Room B CC-C Conference Center, Room C CL Choir Loft CR Choir Room GS Grade School HH-BR Heritage Hall Board Room HH-B Heritage Hall Mtg.
