8 August 27, 2017 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 8 Christian Service Happenings And More Saint Vincent de Paul Like Peter in today s gospel, we can find that when we open our eyes to see, our ears to hear, and our hearts to experience Jesus presence in our daily lives, God reveals himself to us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul enabled the poor to experience Jesus presence by assisting families with their utility and rent bills, and providing much needed food. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Can You Trust God? by Dr. Tim Gray Our aluminum can collection has been a great success. It has provided us the funding we need to support our priests and seminarians. Please continue to drop off your aluminum cans next to the trailer behind the Kaycee Club Hall. Since the fall of our first parents, humanity has been tempted to mistrust the love that God the Father has for us. Scripture scholar Dr. Tim Gray takes us on a journey that addresses the pervasive misconceptions that God is quick to anger, that the God of the Old and New Testaments are different, and that God doesn t have a merciful heart for us. You will see that you can trust our heavenly Father, who is truly one with his Son. This really helped me understand God and trust him even more. Patrick - Downers Grove, IL Dr. Gray spoke very clearly and in a simple manner but with such enriched points about why we should trust God. The stories about he and his son allowed a personal connection to form between the listener and the speaker which made the message of this CD become ingrained in my mind. Gian - Swansea, S Glam Tim Gray opens our hearts to truly experience God as our merciful Father! Nancy - Union City, TN Volunteers Needed! Saints Peter and Paul volunteers staff the PADS location on the First Wednesday of each month at First Congregational, which is across from SSPP on Benton Ave. We have two schedules of volunteers: Oct/Dec/Feb/Apr and Nov/Jan/Mar/May. Can you commit to volunteer for 4 or 8 days a year for a few hours? Please consider helping. Call or with questions or to volunteer. Oct/Dec/Feb/Apr Schedule: Tammy Geary or tamaraageary@gmail.com. Would you like to be that person in the life of someone earnestly trying to improve their circumstances? Our next Moving UP program starts in January of 2018 and we are looking for mentors for our next class. Moving UP is a 16-week program, where clients investigate the impact poverty has on their lives and what it takes to move from just getting by to moving up. The goal is to help them transform their lives to be more stable, selfdirected and self-sustaining. The members of the program have chosen to attend evening classes exploring past barriers and creating new successes. We need mentors to offer support and encouragement during the program and the months following. (You are not instructors during the program.) The mentors help the client explore in detail their future story. Mentors are a sounding board, a cheerleader and a listener. They provide support, encouragement, and connection to resources; and they guide the client in implementing their personal plan. The relationship can be in person or via phone conversations. Mentor training will be provided in November The Saints Peter and Paul Transitional Housing Ministry has been helping homeless families with dependent children become self-sufficient since Your donations in the pink envelopes help the Ministry provide 2 years of temporary housing, life-skills mentoring, job training and other supportive services for each family in our program. 11 August 27, 2017 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Matthew s Gospel Corner Central to today s Gospel is Peter s confession and Jesus response. The Messianic promise spoken to King David is realized in Jesus: He it is who shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me, and I will not withdraw my favor from him (1Chron 17:3-15 and 2 Samuel 7:4-16). This passage referred not only to Solomon, King David s son, but also to the future Messiah. In Matthew 16:13-20 the fulfillment of this prophesy is revealed through Peter s confession of faith: You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). While regarded by many as a prophet, Jesus is much more than a prophet. He is the unique Son of the Father who came to establish a chosen people, a temple not made of human hands (Acts 17:24). We who follow Him, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5). Peter s confession begets a beatitude, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah as it was not human insight that led him to this confession but rather the revelation of the Father. Jesus then tells Peter in Aramaic antah hu Kepha we al kepha den ebneh (You are Kepha [Rock], and on this kepha [rock] I will build my church. Along with Catholic biblical scholars, two eminent Protestant scripture scholars, W. D. Davies and D. C. Allison, conclude, The most natural interpretation is that of the Roman Catholic tradition: the rock is Peter. The word play and the whole structure of the passage demands that this verse is every bit as much Jesus declaration about Peter as verse 16 was Peter s declaration about Jesus. Jesus goes on to say, I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Not surprisingly, this pronouncement also has an Old Testament parallel. In the first reading, Isaiah describes the role of the master of the palace whose authority to speak on behalf of the king is symbolized by a key: I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one will shut, what he shuts, no one will open Isaiah 22:22). Jesus, the eternal King of David, bestows on Peter a special role within His Church. Peter is the authoritative teacher without peer. His preeminence among the Apostles is clearly established in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. Peter, like Abraham, is given a new name when called by God to lead His chosen people a name that denotes his function. While the other Apostles were also given the power to loose and to bind, Matthew 16:16 refers to Peter s unique role within the universal church; whereas, Matthew 18:18 refers to the role of the other Apostles within the local church. This is consistent with the authority of Peter and his successors compared to the authority of the successors of the other Apostles, the local bishops. Just as Yahweh laid a precious cornerstone as a sure foundation in Zion (Jerusalem), a stone that has been tested, so that all those who put their faith in it should not be shaken (Isaiah 28:16), so Jesus gave the Church a cornerstone, Peter, the Rock, so that the message of salvation might be safeguarded and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. It follows then from the unique role that Peter was given that Peter s successors should also share in the authority Christ bestowed upon him as the authoritative teacher through whom the Holy Spirit works in a unique way. Let us pray then for Pope Francis, the successor of Peter, that he might be strengthened in his role in leading the Church, the people of God, and let us pray for Bishop Daniel Conlon that he might guide our local Church with wisdom and generosity. Let us also pray that we might listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as revealed through His Church, conforming our will to the will of God. 1Joseph A.
