This will help us give you proper credit for your donation. Thank you for your continued support. Actual Fiscal Year-to-Date Average Sunday Collections (22 Sundays) $ 42,063 St. Augustine declared, Certainly, if there are good sheep there are also good shepherds; good sheep give rise to good shepherds. The Lord today is calling the faithful in ever growing numbers to pray, to offer sacrifices, in order to have holy priests. A concern, a passion, for holy priests has spread as a sign of the times throughout today s Church. - Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap., Preacher to the Papal Household Prayerfully consider joining the Saints Peter and Paul Hands in Prayer ministry, which is dedicated to praying fervently for the priests of our parish each and every day of the year. Members of Hands in Prayer make a yearlong commitment to spend an hour in prayer every week, exclusively for the priests of our parish. Ideally, this time of prayer should be offered on the same day of the week each week, and before the Blessed Sacrament, if possible. Let us pray as the English martyr St. John Fisher prayed, for priests who will be strong and mighty pillars that may suffer and endure great labors for the Church. For more information and to sign up for a weekly commitment during 2019, please contact Deacon Joe Verdico at or jverdico@sspeterandpaul.net. BECOME AN USHER We are in need of Ushers for all Masses If you enjoy meeting and greeting others and are looking for a way to serve the church, here s your opportunity. We encourage both men and women to volunteer. Please contact Vijay at: gtgith123@gmail.com for more information. Volunteers Needed! We would love your help in cleaning the sacristy, altars, and statues for Christmas on Saturday, December 15th, a er the 8:00am Mass. Call Susan at or ssans4521@gmail.com. We also need volunteers to help decorate the Church for Christmas a er the 8:00am Mass on Saturday, December 22nd. If you are available, please join us in the Church at that me. It would be a wonderful service to our church to help make it beau ful for this Christmas season. Saints Peter and Paul Church December 9, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 3

4 We look forward to you joining us at our parish s Holy Hour with Benediction on the vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:30PM in the Holy Family Chapel (Ministry Center) to pray that God will give great graces to Fathers Baker, Thomas, Tomy, McGeean and Nestor. Bring the whole family to pray and sign a Christmas card for our priests. Let s fill the Chapel to show our priests that we support them! For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ~Ephesians 6:12 We Need Your Help! Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, December 21st. We have volunteers in onehour shifts from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abortion clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abortion-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abortion clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abortion-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at or janecfonner@comcast.net for more information, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abortion. Year End Giving Considerations THANK YOU to all who have generously helped to support Saints Peter and Paul this past year. Your thoughtful gifts to our parish and its ministries are a wonderful example of your faith and commitment to our parish community and the Lord. The final months of the year are traditionally considered the season of giving. In addition to gifts we give to the important people in our lives, this season of generosity is also the prime time to show support for the causes we love. When we look back at the days and months of the years and the countless blessings we have received, we hope that you will consider special ways to give back to the Lord for all He has given each of us. With the passing of the 2017 Tax Reform law you may be wondering how you can continue to best be charitable in There is still time to make a difference with a gift based on your unique situation while taking into consideration the new tax reform law. Here are a few ideas for consideration during the time that is remaining in Of course, traditional monetary gifts are always greatly appreciated. Donate appreciated stock Gift your appreciated stock and eliminate capital gains tax. Refer to the Parish website for stock donation instructions. Donate from an IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) tax-free (if age 70½ or older) Regardless of whether you itemize your taxes, this gift helps you fulfill your required minimum distribution (RMD) and is not considered taxable income. Contact your IRA fund administrator for specific directions on how they would handle this type of transaction. Employer Matching Gifts Some companies have matching gift programs. If your employer has this type of program, please consider utilizing this program. There are many companies who offer employee matching gift programs for educational purposes. Please consult your attorney or tax advisor to determine what is best for your unique situation. Saints Peter and Paul Church December 9, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 4

5 We Teach More Parents who enroll their children at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic School are not only looking for them to reach their highest academic potential, we believe that parents enroll their children because we are a child-centered school that teaches values and morals based on the Catholic religion. Our highly-skilled educators incorporate faith into their lessons no matter the subject. Our students come to know and love Jesus Christ through daily prayer, celebration of the Mass weekly, prayer time before the Blessed Sacrament, daily religion classes, and praying the Stations of the Cross. Service is another important component of our students experiences at our school. Mrs. O'Malley and all of the Jr. High students put their "Faith In Action" this Thanksgiving by collecting personal items like toilet paper, toothbrushes and shampoo for DuPage Pads. During Advent their "Faith in Action" will be to collect hats, gloves, and hand warmers. We strive to give our students a well-rounded education where each student can flourish spiritually, academically, emotionally, and socially. 7 God knows where we are and comes Advent: Rethinking the Season by Dr. Tim Gray Advent is an odd season. Unlike most other seasons, it s a season that isn t about itself but is instead about preparing for Christmas. But that reality often gets lost in the shuffle and stress of trying to find all the right gifts, decorations, and dinner ingredients. In this talk, Dr. Tim Gray uses storytelling and the readings of the Old Testament to explain that we need to live the pre-season of Advent well, so we can be prepared to welcome and receive the greatest gift God the Father wants to give us at Christmas: His Son, Jesus. Dr. Gray has an engaging way of teaching, with great stories and analogies. He makes the readings from Isaiah and the Old Testament really come alive, no matter the liturgical year. I learned so much about Advent from this talk. Michael Naples, FL This is divine revelation: God coming, God showing, God being with us. Always! Let us, therefore, wear the cloak of justice and the hat of God s glorious splendor. That is, let us still dress like Christ just as we were first clothed in Him at Baptism and radiate His presence just as we were first illumined by Him in that sacramental bath. John the Baptist calls us today to conversion. What will we do? How can we wear mercy like a comfortable cloak, a well-worn hat? How can our daily lives shine in more merciful ways? Oplatki Available at Saints Peter and Paul There s still time to purchase your Oplatki for the Christmas season. The Parish Office is selling Oplatki for $3.00 (cash or check only) through December 21st. 11 Saint Vincent de Paul In today s Gospel, John the Baptist urges us to Prepare the way of the Lord, and this is what Advent is all about. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: Transitional Housing Ministry The holiday season can be difficult for those struggling to make ends meet. The Transitional Housing Ministry has a new family in desperate need of a car so the hard-working mom can get to and from her job. You might recall that this is our second request for a car within the past couple of months we are pleased to announce that an anonymous donor from the parish donated a car to the family in need. Again, we ask for your assistance. If you, or someone you know, has a used car in good running condition, please consider donating it to Ministry. Our sincere thanks to all who have given so generously of your time and resources in supporting our program. We currently house four homeless families in our apartments, and they are most appreciative of the prayers and thoughtfulness coming from Saints Peter & Paul parishioners, particularly during this holiday season.
