3 Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Welcome back to School! The students of our parish school we welcomed back this Wednesday and we will welcome back the students of our religious education program in about 3 weeks! Wow! Where has the summer gone. Please remember all of our students and families in your prayers as they will certainly be in mine. Parish Church Restoration Thursday, August 7th, we had a meeting to discuss some proposals regarding our church restoration project first mentioned to the community in the Pass It On materials given to the parish. We had nearly 100 parishioners attend and hear presentations on the meaning and purpose of sacred architecture, explanations of some of the principles of Gothic Revival architecture (the style of our parish church) and a photo history of the way our church has been decorated. It was also at this meeting that we explained the project which you see on the front of the parish bulletin today and, if you are in the church, before your eyes: the restoration of the reredos behind our main altar to its original state. You may not have realized that the reredos was not marble but stained wood, because it has been painted white. We have also put the display boards, which were used to demonstrate the look of Gothic Revival architecture in our area and the present look of our parish church, in the upper atrium of the Ministry Center for all who would like to see them. One proposal that has been submitted to Saints Peter and Paul for the restoration work to be done in our parish church was also shown at the meeting. We will be waiting for a second design option to be submitted by the same architect who painted the church in This company is excited about the possibility of working on this restoration project. It should be noted that monies for this work were included in the original "Pass It On" goal and so the purpose of this information is not to solicit more funds from you. Respecting our Heritage and Building our Future: High Altar in the Parish Church One of the goals of Pass It On was showing our gratitude for the sacrifices of our forebears and preparing our parish for the future. Some of the projects of Pass It On are almost entirely unseen like heating systems in the church and Jr. High School...others will be readily seen like the restoration of the sanctuary in our parish church. All of the projects completed today are important. The heating system is almost completed! The high altar is completed. The restoration of our 90 year old wood floors in the church is completed and the tuckpointing of our parish church is well on its way to completion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church declares: "...by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all." World Renowned Expert Denis McNamara explains: "The altar is not only a memorial of the table of the upper room of the Last Supper, but prefigures the radiant table of the Banquet of the Lamb at the end of time when all has been glorified and is radiant with the light of Christ... The cup is indeed a precious chalice even though it keeps a deep connection to the simple cup of Christ's time on earth. Its sacramental role is to prefigure the glorious banquet of our heavenly future and be worthy, becoming, and beautiful by revealing a radiant flash of the transfigured heavenly perfection." In our own beautiful parish church, the wooden reredos (the large high altar behind the main altar in which is reposed the tabernacle) which was painted white a couple of decades ago was originally (1927) stained a dark color stain close to the color of the pews and confessionals. Please notice that the reredos was never marble...it was always made of wood. It was just difficult to (continued on next page)

4 Page 4 (continued from previous page) notice this, because it had been painted white several decades ago. This original design is quite common in American Gothic Revival Churches as is seen in several of the sample images on the display boards which can be viewed in the upper atrium of the Ministry Center. For these reasons, the parish has decided to restore our reredos close to its original beauty. The dark wood will be highlighted by gold leaf trim in keeping with similar altar pieces in other Gothic Revival churches, consonant with the intent of the original builders of our parish church and the understanding of the Eucharist as the commemoration of the Last Supper and Heavenly Banquet Feast of the Lamb...whose image is engraved on the front of our marble altar below the tabernacle. The dark stained wood will highlight the beautiful marble pinnacle above the tabernacle which had been difficult to see with the sun coming in from the large crucifixion window behind it. Please notice that this has not obscured our ability to enjoy this beautiful window. This will also make the central focus of our church more clear, i.e., the altar at which the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated. Please remember that the present main altar is actually a piece of the high altar which was moved to its present location and, therefore, one altar. Although the main central altar is separated by approximately 10 feet from the rear high altar, we should think of these as one reality...the altar of our parish church. As our parish does not remain stagnant but looks to the future, we also remember and respect the many parishioners who built our parish church. Please remember that these are not changes to our sanctuary but a restoration (and not even a complete restoration) of how our church appeared for the greater part of her history...the first 58 of her 87 years. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota EXTENDED PARISH OFFICE HOURS Beginning Monday, August 18th, the parish office will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30am 5:00pm. DID YOU HAVE A PHOTO TAKEN FOR THE PARISH DIRECTORY?
