3 October 1, 2017 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Fr. Stanley Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017 in Oklahoma City, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the beatification - as the Prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints on the pope s behalf at a mass attended by approximately 20,000 people. Fr. Stanley was a missionary priest serving in Guatemala and killed for his outspoken views in defense of the innocent and those in need. On the morning of July 28 (1981) just after midnight, gunmen broke into the rectory of his church and shot him twice in the head after a brief struggle. The killers forced the teenager Francisco Bocel (who was in the church at the time) to lead them to the bedroom of the red-bearded Oklahoma-born missionary. The men threatened to kill Bocel if he did not show them Rother and so Bocel led them downstairs and knocked on a door near the staircase saying: Father. They are looking for you. [6] Rother opened the door and a struggle ensued as Bocel ran upstairs hearing Rother yell: Kill me here! One shot pierced his jaw and the fatal shot struck the left temple; there were bruises on both hands. The priest at the neighboring parish and a close friend of Fr. Stanley was a priest by the name of Msgr. Gregory Schaffer, who soon became a legend in his own right serving the Lord in His people in Guatemala. Although Msgr. Schaffer has gone to his rest in Christ, his nephew, Fr. Gregory Schaffer now serves the Lord in His people in one of the poorest areas in Venezuela, and will be visiting our parish after having attended the Beatification ceremony of his uncle s close friend Fr. Stanley. Right now, the people of Venezuela are going through a tumultuous time not unlike that of the people of Guatemala in the 1980s and Fr. Gregory Schaffer is right in the middle of it addressing the basic medical, vocational, nutritional and spiritual needs of God s people...much like Fr. Stanley. We know you have been asked to support those in need in a special way these last three weeks with special collections for the victims of the hurricanes, but we ask one more time. Fr. Schaffer will speak at most of our Masses this weekend and a collection will be taken to support his efforts to support those most in need. Thank you again for your generosity! In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota PARISH SACRIFICIAL GIVING We sincerely thank everyone for their generosity and support. 8 October 1, 2017 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 8 America is at a historic crossroad. Secularists are trying to remove God from the public square. They reject His beneficial action upon society. But without God, where would our leaders gain the wisdom needed to solve the great problems we face? As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the miracle of sun at Fatima, our Religious freedom is at stake. We need our Lady s intercession and protection more than ever. As the sanctity of Marriage and family is endangered by the legalization and normalization of homosexual marriage. Babies are being killed in the womb, and their body parts sold like a commodity. Satanic Black Masses are celebrated publically to offend our Lord. We must not allow the secularist to advance their agenda and pray to God for help. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. In The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering. So please come and join us. What: The Holy Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and other Marian Prayers. Where: The corner of Washington and Benton Streets in downtown Naperville (in front of the IVF clinic). When: Saturday October 14th, at 12:00 Noon. All are most warmly welcome. This is a wonderful way to spend some quiet time with our Blessed Mother asking for her intercession before school pick up. For our mothers with young children, please know they are always welcome. OUR LADY OF FATIMA ROSARY RALLY This year marks the 100 th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima s appearances and the Miracle of the Sun, witnessed by over 70,000. 11 October 1, 2017 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Matthew s Gospel Corner Today s parable about the two sons (Mt 21: 28-32) follows Jesus triumph entry into Jerusalem, the sub sequent indignity of the Pharisees, the cleansing of the Temple, and the cursing of the fig tree. The Pharisees, who rejected John the Baptist s call to repentance and Jesus proclamation of the Kingdom, professed to be doing the Father s will; whereas, their motives and actions demonstrated that their focus was solely on personal appeasement. When the Pharisees challenged Jesus authority to call out those who had turned His Father s house into a marketplace, they refused to answer Jesus question: By whose authority did John the Baptist preach? While they rejected that John was sent by God, they feared to say so lest they lose the respect and financial backing of the crowd and so claimed ignorance. This exchange with the Pharisees leads to today s Gospel. Those sinners who repented at the words of Jesus and John the Baptist are represented by the first son who initially responded with open refusal to do the father s will but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The Greek τέκνα, is an affectionate term for a beloved child, and so his refusal would have been particularly hurtful to the father. 1 The use of a vineyard ties this parable to the one immediately following it as well as the parable of the laborers that preceded it. The Pharisees are represented by the second son who respectfully responded to his father but had no intention of doing the father s will. The son s use of the word sir heightens the hypocrisy of his response, who in his words honored the father but by his actions distained him. The Pharisees, knowledgeable of the law and the prophets, like the second son, could not claim that they were ignorant of what was required of them. Even the Pharisees had to acknowledge that it was the second son who was the obedient and faithful one. By doing so, they implicitly acknowledged their own failure before God. Unlike the confrontation previously when the Pharisees claimed ignorance regarding John s authority, here they are forced to admit the obvious. When the Pharisees first heard John the Baptist, they rejected him as a false prophet, as a fanatic seeking attention and notoriety. While that in and of itself was inexcusable, they still refused to acknowledge that John was truly sent by God even when they witnessed that the most notorious sinners, prostitutes, and tax collectors had repented upon hearing his words, because doing so would mean that they, too, must acknowledge their own failings and need for repentance. The Pharisees, like Matthew s hearers, would have been appalled at the suggestion that prostitutes (the unchaste) and tax collectors (the unjust) would be welcomed into God s kingdom while they themselves risked exclusion. The parable from today s Gospel pointedly confronts the falsehood of those who profess to serve God, merely giving lip service to Him, while refusing to acknowledge their own sinfulness and repent. In doing so, they condemn themselves. Throughout the Gospels Jesus makes it clear that it is not the sinner He condemns, but the incalcitrant hypocrite who believes that they have no need of forgiveness while condemning other s failures. Jesus cleansed the Temple because its leaders had turned it into a source of revenue. Like the fig tree, it no longer produced fruit and needed to be dug up and tossed into the fire. Even Jesus harshness toward the Pharisees was aimed at their repentance, however fruitless the effort might be. By comparing themselves to great sinners, the Pharisees considered themselves on safe ground. As Christians, we are called not to compare ourselves with other sinners, but with Christ. It is in His light that we can clearly see our sinfulness and who we are called to be. The trap that the Pharisees fell into is a trap each of us face particularly those who strive to pray, fast, attend daily Mass, and give generously to those in need. It is often easier for the disenfranchised, the down trodden, the least important in society to recognize their need for God than it is for the self-made, the educated, the successful, and the wealthy. 2 Matthew s parable is directed not at the Pharisees, but at the early Christians and to us. St. Paul reminds us: Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith (Heb 12:2). It is by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus that we will see ourselves as God sees us and we will know what direction leads us to Him. 1 Davises and Allison, Mathew 19-28, International Critical Commentary, p.167; see also pp Ibid. St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1.
