All accompanied by 1st communicants and the Knights of Columbus And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that those who believe in Him may not perish, but may have life everlasting. John 3:14 Invitation to All 1st Communicants All First Communicants are invited to serve as escorts for the Blessed Sacrament in the Corpus Christi Procession. Parents should bring their children, dressed in their First Communion attire to the church by 12:15 pm. They will walk with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament escorted by the Knights of Columbus. For response & questions: Joan Nocera or joannienoce@gmail.com EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE CASCIA, 1330 At Cascia, in the basilica dedicated to St.Rita, is also preserved the relic of the Eucharistic Miracle, which happened near Siena in A priest was asked to bring Communion to a sick peasant. The priest took a consecrated Host which he irreverently placed in the pages of his breviary and went to the peasant. When he arrived at the house of the sick man, after hearing his confession, he opened the book to take out the Host which he had placed there. To his great surprise he found that the Host was stained with living blood, so much as to mark both pages between which the Blessed Sacrament had been placed. Over the centuries, this illustrious Relic has always been honored by the faithful with, great veneration, and the Supreme Pontiffs have promoted its cult with many special indulgences. The miraculous event is particularly commemorated each year by the feast of Corpus Christi, when the Relic is borne solemnly in procession. EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE LANCIANO, ITALY 780AD In the 8th century A.D., in the little church of St. Legonthian, a Basilican monk was having doubts about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. During Mass, after the two-fold consecration, the Host was changed into live Flesh, and the Wine was changed into live Blood. The Host -Flesh can still be seen today. It is light brown, and appears rose - colored when lighted from the back. The Blood is coagulated, and has an earthy color resembling the yellow of ochre. Scientific investigations have taken place since These are some of the conclusions: The Flesh is real Flesh. The Blood is real Blood. The Flesh consists of the muscular tissue of the heart. The Flesh and Blood have in them AB type blood, the same blood type found in the Holy Shroud of Turin.

Augustine Institute/ Lighthouse Catholic Media CD/ Resource Program Evangelizing Catholics by Dr. Scott Hahn In this informative and dynamic presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn discusses why the New Evangelization is the greatest priority of the Church at this time, and how we are all called to share our faith. He shows how the Eucharist relates to explaining Jesus' death and resurrection, and how Blessed John Paul II's called for a New Evangelization must be based on the Eucharist. This talk by Scott Hahn made me realize how important it is to be a "messenger for Christ's Truth". This is the message of Pentecost which we just celebrated! I bought 20 copies of this talk to share with family and different groups within my Church (RCIA, Confirmation, Men's Bible Study, etc.) Audrey - Bayboro, NC "The best information that I have heard on the New Evangelization and what it means to us!" Charlie - Hunt Valley, MD What benefited me was the information Dr. Hahn taught is not only for Catholics, but for all Christians. 9 Page 9 BAPTISM INFORMATION What about Baptism? Do you want to have your child baptized? What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested norms. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore the inability for Ss. Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words. 1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason. 2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 868,2. Godparents When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it. This Godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year. 3 Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. 4 Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 5 Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared. 6 Not be the father or the mother. 7 A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life. A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate. 8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female. 9 The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological parents who are of the same sex so it is impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing the godparents. They will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godparents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements. 3 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1. 5 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 7 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 9 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 6 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 8 CIC 1983, canon 874, 2 SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on the 1st Monday of each month beginning at 7:30 PM in the St. Paul Center for the New Evangelization (formerly called Pastoral Hall). Our next class is Monday, June 5th. If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby s baptism. Both, mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend. Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office, (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Ss. Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to provide a letter of verification. We baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month at 2 PM. Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized to four. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $ Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than ten (10) business days prior to the baptismal date, or your date will be rescheduled. This includes all necessary information regarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation classes and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and community, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.

10 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January June 4, , 2016 Page 10 Matthew s Gospel Corner Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Eleven in the upper room where they had celebrated the Last Supper. In Jesus last discourse to His disciples, He promised that He would send the Holy Spirit who would guide you to all truth (John 16:13). That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost. In the vigil Mass for Pentecost there are three options for the first reading from the Old Testament, each one highlighting a different aspect of the significance of Pentecost. The first is taken from Genesis 11: 1-9 when the people decided to build a tower to the heavens so that they might make a name for themselves. It is not because they wished to build a tower that God punished them, but because in seeking to "make a name for themselves" they wished to live autonomously from God, their Creator, committing the sin of pride. 1 The passage recounts that all peoples spoke one language, but as a consequence of this sin, their speech was confused (babel) resulting in their alienation from each another. In the account of the Tower of Babel, the continued destructive nature of sin is illustrated. In Adam and Eve's first sin they alienated themselves from God, and when Cain killed his brother Abel we see fragmentation and division within the family. Now in the Tower of Babel nations are at enmity with each other, each seeking its own advantage. Left to our own, sin abounds. In contrast, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles, upon receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples immediately go out to proclaim "the mighty works of God," yet the people, gathered in Jerusalem from all the nations, were confused (babel) because each heard the proclamation in their own language. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, the consequences of sin are overcome, our alienation from God, family, and nations is ended and healing and restoration made possible. The second option is taken from Exodus 19: 3-8, 16-20, which describes the fifty days Moses spent on Mt. Sinai when God entered into a covenant with His people Israel and gave them the Law. At the time of Christ, certain Jews commemorated for fifty days the covenant that God had established and the Law that He had given. This Festival of Weeks, or Pentecost, first celebrated by the Jews, is now celebrated by Christians to commemorate the New Covenant God had established with His people and the gift of the Holy Spirit, the law of the New Covenant. The third option is taken from the prophet Ezekiel: 37: 1-14, who in a vision sees a barren land filled with the bones of the dead. Suddenly, God blows life into these dry bones and the dead are raised to life again. The imagery of God blowing life into these dry bones is reminiscent of the Genesis creation account when the Spirit of God blew life into Adam and Eve. This prophecy foreshadows the work of the Holy Spirit, namely, to restore us to life, eternal life. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles recounts the bestowing of the Holy Spirit. The recurring message throughout the Acts of the Apostles is that the driving force behind the work of the Church is the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who leads and guides the Church, the instrument of God's grace. It is the Spirit working through His disciples that moves and changes hearts, leading to conversion and sanctification. It is the Spirit that enables reconciliation with God, family, and nations. In the second reading from 1 Corinthians, we realize that although the gifts of the Holy Spirit differ depending on the specific mission each of us are given, they all flow from the same Holy Spirit, and each gift, each disciple, contributes to the building up of the Kingdom of God we form one body in Christ. In today s Gospel from John 20:19-23, Jesus appears to His disciples and says, Peace be with you. In this, Jesus fulfills His promise to be with them at all times as He bestows on them the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that we come by adoption to be the sons and daughters of God, the source of peace. Let us continue to celebrate the mysteries of our salvation and pray to the Holy Spirit that we might be receptive to the promptings of grace and live out this new covenant of love, proclaiming it with our lives to all peoples. 2 1 Brown, Fitzmyer, Murphy, The Jerome Biblical Commentary, p Brown, The Anchor Bible, The Gospel of John, Volume 29A, p For more information about Matthew s Gospel Corner Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com
