5 8 th Annual Literary Debate Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School recently hosted the 8th Annual Crosstown Challenge Literary Debate. Seventh and eighth graders from our school, All Saints Catholic Academy, and St. Raphael, gathered to debate topics relevant to three literary works, as well as a selection of public policy topics. This year we had 73 students from the three schools participate. Prizes were awarded to the top 5 individuals and top three teams. Trophies were awarded for the public policy debate. Debate topics included: All students should be required to participate in at least one sport while in school, Limiting screen time should be more of a family issue than a societal issue, and There are more negative than positive role models for teens. As part of the Literature Plus program, SSPP language arts and reading teacher, Ms. Pat Mahoney, created this event in 2011 and has coordinated it ever since. Months of planning and student preparation allows this academic event to take place each spring. Skype Interview with Author of the Book Coco On Wednesday April 20th, 8th grade Spanish students had the opportunity talk with Coco author, Angela Cervantes, during a Skype interview. Ms. Cervantes discussed her journey writing the book version for Disney's new movie Coco and the challenges she faced transforming the movie script into a chapter book. She also talked about her family and personal life and how she still honors her ancestors each year during Dia de losmuertos. The students were then able to ask questions at the end of the presentation, which she enjoyed very much! 10 Saint Vincent de Paul St. Vincent was a great inspiration to Frederic Ozanam in his life, work and writings. For Vincent, however, and for Frederic, it was the charity of Christ which pressed them on to do what they did for the poor of their time. It is a mystery how God could love mankind, disfigured by sin and infidelity. Likewise, it is a mystery of God that the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are able to love people who are disfigured by the effects of poverty and injustice, and who are often so unattractive in their poverty. As we work for and visit the poor, we take heart from the thought that we are reflecting into this dark world the light and the love of God. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel is taken from John 15:1-6, where Jesus reveals that He is the true vine, the source of life. Jesus begins by saying, I am the true vine. I AM is the name Yahweh used for Himself when He appeared to Moses in the burning bush. John wants us to understand that it is not merely a man who speaks these words, but God s only bego en Son. Jesus does not pull any punches: Any branch that does not bear fruit is cut off. We need to realize that these are branches already united to the vine Chris ans already united to Christ that will be cut off. Like Judas at the Last Supper, par cipa on in the Eucharis c meal does not guarantee salva on. Only those who remain in Him and bear fruit will be saved. How do we remain in Him? John tells us keep His commands. What does He command? Love one another. Love is the apostolic mission. It is what dis nguishes a true Chris an from a false one. Love is shown in ac ons, not merely in words. Love puts the good of others before self. The Ten Commandments show us what pu ng others before self looks like. Does this mean that if we are cut off there is no returning? Certainly not, John reminds us that Jesus is our intercessor in heaven. The Sacrament of Reconcilia on is our path back to Christ. Frui ulness is both a sign and a consequence of discipleship. Just as the branch can only produce fruit if it is united to the vine, we can only produce fruit united to Christ. Separated from Him, our labors are in vain we can produce nothing that leads to eternal life. The Gospel enjoins us: work for that which lasts. Jesus assurances of forgiveness and life everlas ng are made frui ul through His death and resurrec on. Similarly, with us, unless the grain dies, it produces no fruit. It is only by dying to self that the fruits of love can be realized. In John s Gospel, Jesus refers to Himself as a spring of water welling up to eternal life (Jn 4), the bread of life come down from heaven (Jn 6), and the life-giving vine (Jn 15). 1 The water, the bread, and the vine are Eucharis c symbols that give and sustain life. If you compare John 15:1-17 with John 6:51-58, the Bread of Life Discourse, the parallels are striking: John Chapter 15:1-7 I am the true vine He who remains in me and I in him It is the vine which gives life to the branch No man can have greater love than this: to lay down his life for those he loves John Chapter 6:51-58 I am the living bread The man who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I am him The man who feeds on me will have life because of me The bread that I shall give is my own flesh for the life of the world 2 I am the living bread and I am the true vine are John s way of expounding on This is my body and This is my blood found in Ma hew, Mark, and Luke s Gospel and St. Paul s Le er to the Corinthians. It is Jesus abiding presence, par cularly in the Eucharist, that gives and sustains life. The Eucharist enables us to remain united to the vine, sustains our spiritual life, and enables us to produce fruit that will last. In the Eucharist, Christ is present to us Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. In this fi eenth-year anniversary of the Saints Peter and Paul Adora on Chapel, take advantage of this opportunity to spend me with Our Lord, and if possible, commit to spending one hour with Him weekly. 1 Brown, The Gospel According to John, The Anchor Bible, p Ibid. p. 673 For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church April 29, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11

Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com. PRAYER NETWORK Monday 3pm Monday 6pm Wednesday 3am Wednesday 6pm St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Please call Jay Albarran at Thursday 8am Friday 2pm Friday 3pm Saturday 7pm Saturday 10pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For the faith and purity of our family. 2. For the successful treatment and healing of Kathy O. 3. For a grandson to find a meaningful job. 4. For healing for Maria. 5.
