Dear parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Praised be Jesus Christ! I hope this letter finds you well. During my time at Saints Peter and Paul, there were many who reached out to me to express their prayers, offer encouragement and even material support during my mother s illness as I became full-time caregiver for her. This support continued as my mother completed her early pilgrimage and now takes her final journey to the Lord. How appropriate that I write to you on the Feast of the Passion of Saint Elizabeth s son. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Brad Baker, priests, deacons and staff of Saints Peter and Paul for their hospitality and support in allowing us to offer her funeral Mass at Saints Peter and Paul, for the beautiful liturgy and for all their hard work. I would like to thank all those who volunteered helping with the liturgy, cleaning the church, handing out Holy Cards and magazines, singing, ushering, setting up in the sacristy, assisting with the luncheon for the priests and bishops, and so much more. Thank you! I am grateful to all of you who welcomed my family to the parish, visited at the wake, are offering prayers and Masses, have written such beautiful cards and letters, offered gifts and support as we mourn her loss. My family and I are truly grateful and we pray, now, that this beautiful woman, my mother, bask in the glory of the Lord. All of you who were so supportive to me during my time at Saints Peter and Paul and continue to show your support, please know of my gratitude and my continued prayers for you. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota Saints Peter and Paul Church September 9, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 3

10 Saint Vincent de Paul St. Vincent tells us that humility is a grace of our Lord Jesus. Humility only comes when the light of Jesus penetrates deeply into our being and into all our thinking and reflection. When that light does penetrate into us, it transfigures everything, not only our opinion about ourselves but our attitude towards others. With humility, God will be glorified, the poor will be served and made happy, and we ourselves will enjoy the grace and peace of Jesus Christ, who is gentle and humble of heart. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p.586) For St. Vincent, simplicity consisted in referring things to God alone, or purity of intention. In this sense, simplicity is doing everything for love of God and for no other end. It entails avoiding human respect, or doing things merely to look good in the eyes of others. Simplicity is speaking the truth. It is saying things as they are, without concealing or hiding anything. The heart must not think one thing while the mouth says another. Vincentians must avoid all duplicity, dissimulation, cunning, and double meaning. (Maloney, He Hears the Cry of the Poor) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Having done verbal battle with the Pharisees in last week s Gospel, today in Mark 7:31-37, Jesus has traveled north into the Gentile regions into what is today Lebanon. Even here His reputation for healing had spread as they brought Him a deaf and dumb man. Taking the man away from the crowds, Jesus thrust His finger into the man s ear, clearing the way so that the man could hear, and after touching His own tongue, Jesus sighed and then touched the man s tongue with His spittle. Immediately, the man spoke freely, and although ordered to remain silent, he and his companions immediately proclaimed to all what God had done. Astonished by what Jesus had accomplished, the crowd observed, He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. Jesus thrust His finger into the man s ear. The Greek word for thrust is ἔβαλεν, meaning throw or cast the same verb used when Jesus casts out or expels demons. It is as if symbolically Jesus thrust His finger into the man s ear to cast out the evil that caused this man so much sorrow. The meaning of the use of spittle is harder to comprehend. While spittle was thought to have had both healing and destructive powers in the ancient world, here Jesus seems to transmit to the man the power of speech that He Himself possessed because immediately afterwards, the man proclaimed to all who would listen what God had done. Why did Jesus sigh? Seeing the effects of sin in the one He loved, Jesus was moved to compassion, while at the same time seemingly angry at the demons who continually pulled the man down. Elsewhere in the Gospel, Jesus disciples ask Him if it is because of personal sin that people suffer, and in response, Jesus tells them that those who suffer are no guiltier than those who have been spared. After witnessing the miracle, the crowd responded, He does all things well. These words re-echo the words from Genesis after God created the world: God looked upon all that He had created and saw that it was very good. Jesus miracle fulfills what Isaiah prophesied would occur in Lebanon when God once again visited His people: Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy (Isaiah 35:5-6). In Chapter 35, Isaiah speaks of the time of new birth, a new creation, when God would restore what was lost through disobedience. Mark s allusions to Genesis 1 and Isaiah 35 mirror St. Paul s words to the Corinthians: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (1Cor. 5:17). In and through Christ, God has brought forth a new heavens and a new earth. Jesus obedience has healed our disobedience. He came to restore to all that was lost through sin. Why did Jesus instruct those He healed not to proclaim what He had done? Throughout Mark s Gospel Jesus vehemently commanded the demons not to speak and instructed those healed to remain silent. Mark used this literary device to drive home the point that it is only after Christ had died on the Cross that we were able see clearly who Jesus is and why He came to dwell among us. After the multiplication of the loaves, the crowds wanted to carry Him away and make Him king. The Pharisees, in contrast, said the work He accomplished was the work of the devil. The disciples told Jesus that some believed He was John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets. None of these descriptions are fitting. Jesus true identity was only revealed as the full measure of His love was poured out on the Cross. The climax of Mark s Gospel comes when, Seeing how He died, the Roman centurion proclaimed, Surely, this one was the Son of God. Only then, in light of the Cross, can we truly understand who Jesus is and comprehend the extraordinary measure of the Father s love. It is from the Cross that Jesus proclaims what God has done for us. Jesus left Jerusalem in the opening verse of the Gospel because the Israelite leaders were looking for a way to kill Him, but the time for His passion and death had not yet come. Rejected by many of the Jews, Jesus had taken His message of salvation to the Gentiles. This action foreshadows the activity of the early Church, that after it had been expelled from Jerusalem, took the Good News to the Gentiles. Jesus offers us His forgiveness and healing, but He does not force Himself upon us. Salvation is a gift that each of us has been given, but it is a gift that we must freely accept and fervently live out. And, like the early Church, if we have been forgiven, if we have been healed, let s joyfully proclaim to others what God has done for us, for He has done all things well. 1 1 Joel Marcus, Mark 1-8, The Anchor Bible, pp For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church September 9, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11

The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Please call Jay Albarran at Friday 10am Friday 12pm Saturday 8pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.
