3 Page 3 Diocese of Joliet Contact: Edward Flavin eflavin@dioceseofjoliet.org office of Communications Blanchette Catholic Center Weber Rd. Crest Hill, Illinois A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP OF JOLIET, R. DANIEL CONLON In this Holy Year, we look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society. How many uncertain and painful situations there are in the world today! How many are the wounds borne by the flesh of those who have no voice because their cry is muffled and drowned out.during this Jubilee, the Church will be called even more to heal these wounds, to assuage them with the oil of consolation, to bind them with mercy and cure them with solidarity and vigilant care. [#15] These words stand at the center of Pope Francis s proclamation, The Face of Mercy, inaugurating the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Now in the midst of that year, I wish to invite all of us to open our hearts to those who have been the victims of sexual abuse while they were minors in the Church. For more than two decades, the Catholic Church in the United States has suffered the agony and shame of this tragedy. Many efforts have been made to heal the wounds. Yet, I am painfully aware that the victims have not, for the most part, been made whole and that the reputation of the Church remains profoundly stained. So distressing is the situation, it often seems beyond repair. But Pope Francis reminds us that from the heart of the Trinity, from the depths of the mystery of God, the great river of mercy wells up and overflows unceasingly. It is a spring that will never run dry, no matter how many people draw from it. Every time someone is in need, he or she can approach it, because the mercy of God never ends. [#25] Therefore, I remain optimistic, not on account of our efforts or sentiments, but on account of the unfailing mercy of God. The Holy Father, in proclaiming the Year of Mercy, turned our attention to the beautiful example of the Blessed Mother, who, at the foot of the cross, attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception. [#24] Inspired by the Mother of Mercy, I invite every parish and chapel in the Diocese of Joliet to use this upcoming September 15, the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, to pray for an outpouring of God s love and mercy upon all of us, especially those who experienced abuse. I recommend that Mass or other forms of prayer be scheduled that day at a time convenient for people to participate, and that the Universal Prayer (petitions) reflect the need for God s mercy in the area of child abuse in the Church. As a bishop, I comprehend that the damage caused by the sexual abuse of minors by ordained ministers of the Church is deep and will last a long time. Still, with Pope Francis, I profess that the Church feels the urgent need to proclaim God s mercy. Her life is authentic and credible only when she becomes a convincing herald of mercy. She knows her primary task, especially at a moment full of great hopes and signs of contradiction, is to introduce everyone to the great mystery of God s mercy by contemplating the face of Christ. In this Jubilee Year, may the Church echo the word of God that resounds strong and clear as a message and a sign of pardon, strength, aid, and love. May she never tire of extending mercy, and be ever patient in offering compassion and comort. [#25] Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet-in-Illinois

4 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Page 4 Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Divine Mercy Sunday Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. Mass will be offered at 12:30 pm by Fr. Sebastian Gargol and the new Divine Mercy Shrine Dedicated and the relics of Pope Saint John Paul and Saint Faustina Kowalska enshrined. Confessions will be heard from 1:30 pm through the praying of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3 pm. Please join us during this very special Divine Mercy Sunday during the Year of Mercy at one of the Pilgrimage Sights of Divine Mercy. Special thanks go to Fr. Sebastian and his team who have designed and executed a beautiful shrine that matches the architecture of our church. We thank all of those who donated to make this shrine possible. Pass It On Plaque and Booklet Pass It On has officially come to an end with the publication of our Pass It On Booklets which were mailed to those who donated to Pass It On. This booklet contains the names of all those who donated to Pass It On over the last four years. Please also notice that a commemoration plaque for Pass It On has now been installed on the Pass It On monument in front of our Jr. High School. The names of all those who donated above $2500 are listed on the plaque as originally explained in our promotional materials at the time Pass It On was originally proposed four years ago. This is the reason that we also made a commemorative booklet contained all the names of those who donated in that every donation matters. Thank you!! 11 Page 11 The Spiritual Works of Mercy BACK TO BASICS There is today a danger that we could misunderstand the meaning of mercy. Some would have us believe that mercy is simply the dismissal of sin a kind of I m OK, you re OK version of mercy. According to this view, God s mercy will excuse our offenses against Him without any contrition or conversion on our part. God simply turns a blind eye to our sins while we keep on sinning. And we are supposed to do the same to others. But this is not mercy. This is license and the sin of presumption presuming on God s mercy without repentance. The Spiritual Works of Mercy serve in part to unmask this false notion of mercy. It is not mercy to leave our brothers and sisters in doubt, ignorance, and sin. Far less it is loving and merciful to confirm someone in these. No, true mercy sees the spiritual need of one in doubt, ignorance, or sin, and seeks to respond by counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, and admonishing the sinner. Admonish the Sinner To admonish means to correct, warn, or reprimand. This is perhaps the least popular of the works of mercy. After all, everyone, even the most biblically illiterate person, knows one Bible verse: Judge not, lest ye be judged! (Matthew 7:1). None of us like to admonish another probably because we ourselves don t like being corrected. When we do admonish the sinner, even in the gentlest way, we may be rebuked with the worst indictment our society has to offer: you re being judgmental! But the truth is that admonishing a sinner, when done in love rather than arrogance, is a great act of charity and mercy. Sin is a cancer; sin is destructive; sin kills our immortal soul. To silently leave a person in their sin may be an act of indifference or cowardice, but it is certainly not the loving, merciful thing to do. Consider what scripture says about reproving one in sin: Jesus himself tells us, Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him (Luke 17:3). Paul gives the same instruction: Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted (Galatians 6:1). James says as much: My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins (James 5:19-20). Certainly, we must act with gentleness and sincerity when admonishing another. We must also avoid hypocrisy, as our Lord warns us: Why do you notice the splinter in your brother s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? (Matthew 7:3). We are also told to make such corrections in private (at least at first), not some kind of public shaming: If your brother sins, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother (Matthew 18:15). Those most directly having care over another are most clearly bound to admonish the sinner. This is especially the case for parents and their children. Above all, the virtue of prudence should guide us in this spiritual work of mercy. Prudence is the virtue that helps us discern the true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it. The prudent person knows when to speak and when to remain silent. The prudent person knows when to use soft language and when to be more forceful. The prudent person knows when they are being loving and when they are being arrogant. Perhaps one of the best ways to practice this spiritual work of mercy, admonishing the sinner, is to invite people to come to the sacrament of Confession with us. This act would show that we are all sinners, all in need of God s mercy. It is also a gentle invitation to conversion and the change of heart that opens one to the mercy of God.

12 LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER Page 12 Today s Gospel is taken from John 20:19-29 when Jesus passes through locked doors, proclaims peace to His disciples, and then shows them His hands and His side. Immediately they come to believe. Yet Thomas, one of the Twelve, was missing and when he returns, he refuses to believe the words of the other disciples, insisting that unless he can shove his finger into the wounds in Jesus hands and probe His side, he will not believe. The next Sunday Jesus appears and tells Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe. Immediately, Thomas proclaims, My Lord and my God! In four episodes John s Gospel describes different ways in which people come to belief in Jesus resurrection. John, the beloved disciple, saw the linen that wrapped Jesus body in one place and the one that wrapped His head in another and came to believe. Mary Magdalene saw the same wrappings but concluded that someone had stolen the body of Jesus. Mary only believed when a man she mistook for the gardener spoke her name.. The disciples, hidden in a room for fear of the Jews, came to believe when Jesus, passing through a locked door, showed them His hands and His side. Lastly, Thomas came to believe when Jesus appeared specifically for him and offered to let him probe His wounds. After Thomas proclamation of faith, Jesus turns His attention to us who will follow the disciples those who will come to belief through the preaching of the apostles and those who would succeed them: Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. The language mirrors the Beatitudes from Luke s Gospel those who come to believe, not having seen the Lord, are recognized as being more blessed, more favored, more noble than those who saw Jesus following the Resurrection. John s Gospel assures us our assent will be rewarded more plentifully. It is somewhat reminiscent of the words from Isaiah prophesizing about Jesus death and resurrection: While we thought of him accursed, as one stricken by God, he shall be given a place among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty (Is 53). We might be tempted to feel that we are accursed, as stricken by God; we might think that if only we could have seen the Lord our faith would be stronger, yet Jesus assures us that like Himself we will given a place among the great and enjoy the blessings of heaven with the mighty. In this He has shown us His mercy and love. For more information about Luke s Gospel Corner Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com
