Speaker: Dr. Lisa Fortini-Campbell Sat., January 30, 2016, 7-9pm - SSPP Ministry Center What is the meaning of real leadership? What is the difference between a "boss" and a "leader"? Tying leadership to authority distorts its Christian meaning and purpose. At this session, we will reflect on the true meaning of leadership and how as lights in this world, we do the work of a true leader - illuminating the light of Christ and bringing the best out in others. 6 Luke s Gospel Corner Page 6 Today s Gospel from Luke begins with a prologue (Luke 1: 1-4) that is unique among the four Gospels. Luke tells us that by relying on eyewitness accounts, as well as other material, he too has set out to write an orderly account about Jesus and His mission in order to assure his reader (s) that the Gospel message passed on is consistent with the message taught by Jesus and handed down by the Apostles. In this way, Luke indirectly describes the primary function of the Church, which is to pass on the apostolic faith that we profess each Sunday in the Nicene Creed. It is quite probable that Luke s Gospel originally began like Mark s Gospel with the birth of John the Baptist (Lk 3:1-6) and that the prologue and infancy narratives were later added by him, so that we now have a systematic progression from Jesus birth, to the Galilean ministry, to His death and resurrection in Jerusalem. In Luke s second work, The Acts of the Apostles, he recounts Jesus ascension into heaven, the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the ministry of the early Church, especially focusing on the work of Peter and Paul. These two Lucan works should be considered as volumes 1 and 2 of one account. It is not Luke s intent to write a biography of Jesus, but to explain why Jesus came and what He accomplished for us. Consequently, Luke chose particular scenes and wove them into a narrative best suited to meet the needs of his audience. Luke s purpose is to tell us that Jesus is The Way, and that strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we are called to join Him on The Way to Jerusalem where He will suffer and rise from the dead. It is also from Jerusalem, Luke tells us, that The Way of salvation went out to all the world, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The language of the Gospel prologue mirrors the language used to honor great Greek and Roman personage, particularly Caesar Augustus, who was proclaimed the savior of the ancient world. The following excerpts from a tribute to Augustus birth and from another official decree, find parallels in Luke s account of Jesus birth and throughout the Gospel. Augustus birth is described as the day when all things first began for he restored everything from chaos and destruction his birth pronounces the beginning of life and ends one s regret for living whereas we cannot give enough thanks for his countless beneficent acts (since) Divine providence has crowned our life with blessings (as He) has sent him (Augustus) to us as a savior to destroy war and our god s birth (Augustus) is for the world the beginning of glad tidings Luke in his writings sets out to proclaim that it is not Augustus, the Roman emperor, who is the Savior of the World, the Prince of Peace, but rather, Jesus of Nazareth, born of a virgin and who suffered under Pontius Pilate. Today s Gospel continues after the prologue with Luke 4:14-21, where returning to His hometown Nazareth, Jesus enters the synagogue and reads the passage from the Prophet Isaiah that foretells the coming of the Messiah. Jesus then concludes with the remark, Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. While Luke s prologue is written in a Romanesque or Grecian literary style, Luke here reverts to one where the prophecies of the Old Testament find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ. Here Luke implores a literary style that mirrors the other Gospels, particularly Matthew. The purpose of Luke s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles is to recount God s work of salvation through Christ and how that message has spread throughout the known world. Luke emphasizes throughout his writings the role of the Holy Spirit, in a way that goes well beyond that of the other Gospel accounts. It is the Holy Spirit who leads and safeguards the Apostles and the faith that they have passed on to us. In Luke s Gospel Jesus proclaims, the kingdom of God is at hand. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus becomes the object of the Apostle s proclamation as we read in Acts 4: 9-13: He (Jesus) is the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved. This passage stands in direct contrast to the assertions made in the announcements of Augustine s birth. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly proclaimed to the Sanhedrin and to the Roman world, Jesus Christ is Lord ; and that the promise of salvation foretold by the Prophet Isaiah was fulfilled in Christ. We too, filled with the Holy Spirit at our Baptism and Confirmation, are called to boldly proclaim that Jesus is Lord; that is He is the Savior of the World, the Prince of Peace. Through our words and actions, it should be clear to all that our hope is in Christ. For more information about Luke s Gospel Corner Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com.

9 Page 9 Liturgically Speaking: The Eucharistic Prayer, Part III We continue to follow Eucharistic Prayer III as a model as we look at the different elements of our Eucharistic Prayers. The words of Eucharist Prayer III will be in bold, while some brief commentary will appear in italics. Back to Basics After the consecration, the anamnesis, or remembrance, is a recollection of the saving death and resurrection of Christ. An anamnesis is never a simple memorial, however. This kind of remembering actually makes present the reality being recalled. We are not just remembering the Paschal Mystery; we are participating in it: Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. (Notice that, in recalling the Paschal Mystery of Christ, the Church also offers to the Father that same sacrifice of Christ, this holy and living sacrifice. ) There can then be discerned a second invocation of the Holy Spirit, an epiclesis in which we ask the Holy Spirit to transform, not bread and wine, but those who will receive them: Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. (Notice again the language of sacrifice: oblation, sacrificial Victim.) Filled with the Holy Spirit, we then offer intercessions for both the living and the dead. We pray for the leaders of the Church, those present, and all of God s people, that they may holiness and eternal life. We also at this time call upon the intercession of the saints in heaven who are present with us, united in the liturgy: May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs and with all the Saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim Church on earth, with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you: in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Then, the final doxology, taken largely from Romans 11:36, directs all our praise and honor and that of all of creation to God the Blessed Trinity: Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. We respond with our Amen. This Amen sums up the entire Eucharistic Prayer that has been prayed on our behalf. In our Amen, we unite our hearts, minds, and voices to the praise, thanks, and joy of the whole church of heaven and earth. The great Amen was said to have resounded in heaven, as a celestial thunderclap in the Roman basilicas (St. Jerome). Have a question about the Liturgy? mikebrummond@gmail.com

We knew we were getting in over our heads, but it had also become apparent in our research that a basic knowledge of food policy is essential for our parishioners to exercise their faith in the public realm, which is, after all, the mission of social justice and part of Christ's call. A basic knowledge of food policy is also essential for putting into proper context the various intersections between food and social justice that we intend to address this year. So, we put on our thinking (or rather, learning) caps, and we invite you to do so, too, as we take a brief look at an area of public policy that impacts everyone, everywhere, every day. The first obstacle to understanding food policy in the United States is, in the words of food advocates Mark Bittman, Michael Pollan, Ricardo Salvador, and Olivier De Schutter, "we have no food policy." Despite the enormous and far-reaching impact of food production and food consumption, government policies related to food are often made piecemeal and oversight is spread out over several federal agencies. In the interest of space and time, we are going to deal with the "mother" of all food legislation in the United States, the law commonly known as "The Farm Bill." This law deals with almost all areas of food policy, from farm to fork, and it is a law our Church leaders recognize as highly important to the Catholic conscience. The Farm Bill is what is known as an "omnibus" piece of legislation. That's a fancy way of saying it is large in size and broad in scope. We might do better to think of it as several laws smashed together into one big law. The most recent Farm Bill contained twelve titles- Commodity Programs, Conservation, Trade, Nutrition, Credit, Rural Development, Research, Forestry, Energy, Horticulture and Organic Agriculture, Crop Insurance, and Miscellaneous. The Farm Bill can create new programs, as well as modify, do away with, and/or reauthorize programs originating in separate laws. In general, the Farm Bill requires reauthorization every five years, and each time it is reauthorized, it gets a new name. Thus, there have been many "Farm Bills" since the "Agricultural Adjustment Act" (AAA) of 1933, which is commonly thought to be the first Farm Bill. The most recent Farm Bill is officially titled "The Agricultural Act of 2014." For convenience, we'll refer to it here as the "2014 Farm Bill." During the extended development of the 2014 Farm Bill, which took about two years (it should have been the 2012 Farm Bill ) and was overshadowed by budget concerns, a coalition of Catholic leaders including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Catholic Rural Life, Catholic Charities USA, and Catholic Relief Services made sure a moral voice was heard on the following Farm Bill issues: 1. Farm subsidies- The very first Farm Bill, the AAA, was passed in large part to support struggling farmers during the economic depression of the 1930s. This support has continued and has taken various forms. Catholic leaders urged Congress to redirect these subsidies away from large, wealthy producers, toward small and medium-sized producers, and others who truly need the support. Our leaders also urged Congress to make sure the support provided to our producers did not disadvantage poor farmers abroad. 2. Conservation- Even before Pope Francis made headlines with Laudato Si, Catholic leaders were urging Congress to use the Farm Bill to encourage food producers to be responsible stewards of their land and common waterways. 3. International nutrition assistance- It may account for a small portion of our government spending, but our efforts to increase food security in vulnerable communities abroad can help them survive acute disasters, and build resilience in the face of environmental and other pressures. Accordingly, Catholic leaders encouraged Congress to include strong international nutrition assistance programs in the Farm Bill. 4. Domestic nutrition assistance- Our leaders were particularly vocal regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps ), and other domestic nutrition assistance programs that provide a lifeline and a leg-up for our most vulnerable neighbors. Our Catholic leaders vigorously defended these programs in the face of large proposed cuts, asserting that agricultural policies must be evaluated according to whether or not they provide our most vulnerable brothers and sisters with sufficient nutritious food. 5. Rural development- Along with urging Congress to redirect farm subsidies toward those who truly need them, our leaders also urged Congress to include programs that provide loans, grants, loan guarantees and technical assistance aimed at ensuring the rural communities that produce our food have the housing, economic and business opportunities, health care, first responder services and equipment, and infrastructure (water, electric and communications) they need to thrive along with the rest of our nation. When the 2014 Farm Bill was finally signed into law on February 7, 2014, Catholic leaders saw mixed results in all of the above policy areas. Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, chair of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, summed up much of the coalition s response thus: While we are disappointed that the final compromise continues to call disproportionately for sacrifices from hungry and poor people in this country and around the world, especially when large industrial agricultural operations continue to receive unnecessary subsidies, we are glad to see support will continue for domestic and international nutrition and development aid, rural development and conservation. Furthermore, in evaluating the 2014 Farm Bill, it is important to bear in mind that many Farm Bill programs do not receive mandatory funding. A mandatory program is a program that generally is not subject to the appropriations process; by contrast, a discretionary program is a program that depends upon the discretion of Congress during the appropriations process to get

11 Page 11 the funding it needs to operate, even if its scope of operations is authorized in the Farm Bill. Thus, many of the programs our Catholic leaders supported in the 2014 Farm Bill are at the mercy of Congress increasingly contentious appropriations process, and require the continued support and advocacy of all concerned if we want them to exist in actuality, and not just on paper. Confused? That may be a good thing. Most of us should never assume we ve got a handle on U.S. food policy. It s just way too complicated. In fact, many food policy advocates argue that it s too complicated for its own good. However, all of us eat, so none of us should assume we aren t a part of it all the good and the bad. Thus, we are called to be aware of our food system, and take part in shaping it. Several organizations are waiting to help you answer this call, including Catholic Rural Life (catholicrurallife.org), the USCCB (usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/agriculture-nutrition-rural-issues), the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (povertyusa.org), and Catholics Confront Global Poverty (confrontglobalpoverty.org). Finally, the Peace and Social Justice Committee owes a debt of gratitude to Food Policy Action (foodpolicyaction.org) for answering our questions and guiding us in our research for this article. At their website, you can find the National Food Policy Scorecard, which provides easy-to-understand information about food legislation considered by the House and Senate, as well as how all members of Congress voted on those issues. Now that we have a better picture of food policy in the United States, and the Farm Bill in particular, we will have an easier time contextualizing, and thus, an easier time understanding the food-related social justice issues we will be discussing this year. In the meantime, let us be grateful that although the food policies crafted by humans can be maddeningly complex, the most important food policy, the one offered by God, is simple and echoed at every celebration of the Eucharist: Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. It is the love offered in this food policy that gives us the courage to learn and speak about worldly food policies, in order to find ways to start setting the table for God s heavenly banquet. It is only with our heart that we can bring compassion, respect and devotion to the destitute and marginalized. It is only with a heart on fire with God s love that service can root us in the faith that in the poor we will see the face of Christ. The St. Vincent de Paul Conference, of Saints Peter and Paul Church is truly blessed to have such generous Parishioners support. Together, we were able to make both Thanksgiving and Christmas more enjoyable for many of your neighbors in need. More than ever before, the needy are close to all of us. At the Thanksgiving Day Mass, the Church was completely filled. Your generosity to share your resources with those in need was shown in the offertory collection. It totaled over $8,200. Your Giving Tree response with food & gas gift cards for SVdP totaled $2,550. Several parish families and two Naperville businesses sponsored families for Christmas. This holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas: 38 families received children s gifts, and gift cards for food; and because of your overwhelming generosity, SVdP purchased over $10,000 of food gift cards and prepared dinners this holiday season which provided over 2,000 meals to families and seniors in our community. All of that is in addition to regular assistance SVdP provides families and individuals monthly with necessities, such as rent, mortgage, utilities, auto expenses, medications, gas gift cards and Pace bus passes to help them get to work. You are a Parish of doers. Without your continued financial support, your SVdP Conference would not have been able to fulfill its mission to help the needy in our community. As you place your gift for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul s continued work, know that you are a sign of God s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust.
