Raised in a nominal Catholic family, who only lived the externals of the faith, Fr. Ken left the Catholic Church for many years. During that time he worked as a business profession in Advanced R&D and software testing; a few years into his career he joined a few of his co-workers in establishing a 4.5M Internet software company. Focused on money, fitness and success, he made little room for God; but God did not give up on him. During this journey, God presented him with challenges that forced him to question his personal beliefs and the question What is Truth? Through a series of conversions, years of struggle, study and questioning, Fr. Ken found his way from agnosticism, to non-denomination Christianity and ultimately back to the Catholic Church. Fr. Ken joined the Fathers of Mercy in 2006 and was ordained in Having lived a secular existence, Fr. Ken has a great understanding of the personal and societal pressures that individuals face and knows what it is like to hate coming to church. This mission is for people of all ages and levels of faith, from those who are madly in love with Jesus, to those who pretty much cannot stand church or religion. Regardless of your level of faith come and experience God s Divine Mercy! The Fathers of Mercy is a Roman Catholic Congregation of Priests. Their primary Apostolate is to preach parish missions and retreats, with an emphasis on the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Confession. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul Vincentian Meditation Pope John Paul II says to the laity: There cannot be two parallel lives in your existence as lay men and women: on the one hand, the so-called spiritual life, with its values and demands; on the other, the so-called secular life, that is life in a family, at work, social relationships, in the responsibilities of public life and in culture. Every activity, every situation, every precise responsibility are the occasions ordained by Providence for a continuous exercise of faith, hope and charity. (US Manual of the SVDP, p.59) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel taken from Mark 9:2-10 recounts Jesus transfiguration. Why is Jesus transformed before His disciples? What is its purpose? Mark structures his narrative into three parts: 1) proclamation, 2) teaching, and 3) revelation. In Part 1, Jesus proclaims the kingdom of God, heals the sick, expels demons, and calls sinners to repentance. Immediately, the demons recognize Jesus but His disciples become increasingly blind. In Part 2, Jesus then teaches them and cures their blindness. In Part 3, Jesus true identity is revealed. After curing the blind man, Jesus asks His disciples, Who do people say that I am? Peter alone proclaims, You are the Messiah. Jesus then announces He is going to Jerusalem to be rejected, persecuted, and killed. Hearing this, Peter rebukes Jesus saying, This cannot be so. Don t go there. Jesus in turn rebukes Peter, You are thinking like man, not God. Peter misunderstands Jesus mission and his own calling; whereby, Jesus instructs him and the other disciples that if anyone wishes to be His disciple, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow Him. Peter is the spokesperson of not only the original Twelve, but for every disciple. Misunderstanding is really an unwillingness to take up one s cross. Peter understands Jesus but resists because of the cost of accepting it. Positioned between two predictions of Jesus impending death is Jesus transfiguration account. Like Moses on Mt. Sinai, Jesus ascends the mountain and is overshadowed by a cloud. God then proclaims, This is my beloved Son, listen to Him. Peter has just proclaimed Jesus as Messiah. Now God says that Jesus not only the Messiah but is His only begotten Son. This revelation is purposeful. It is as if the Father is telling the disciples, I know what Jesus is saying to you is tough, but listen and heed the message because of Who it is that is saying it! This is not just another man. This is My Divine Son. You can trust Him. Immediately following Jesus transfiguration, in order to reinforce its message, Jesus expels a demon from a youngster, who falls dead, but is taken by Jesus and raised up. The boy s father is the model disciple, saying, I believe, help my unbelief. Following Jesus means dying to self in service to others, but we can trust that Jesus will take us by the hand, pull us up, and raise us to life. Jesus transformation is a foreshadowing of our own transformation into the children of God who share in His happiness and joy. We believe, Lord, help our unbelief. Expel the demons in our life as we take up our cross, follow You, and are transformed into Your likeness. Transformation into Christ s image is what Lent is all about. See, I make all things new (Rev 21:5). For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church February 25, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11

13 Pray With Us COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT... Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7 Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com. PRAYER NETWORK Monday 4am Thursday 3am Tuesday 2am Saturday 7pm Tuesday 3am Saturday 10pm Wednesday 3am Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For Katherine. 2. For the repose of the soul of Gene, Mary, Dorothy, and Marion Sr. McHugh. 3. For the healing of Gene McHugh and Dina Boyce. 4. For the protection of the unborn. 5. For a Holy Lenten season for our Adorers. 6. For the Holy Souls in purgatory.
