4 Have you ever been unable to explain the why of Catholic beliefs? Have you ever wondered why the Old Testament sounds so different from the New Testament? In the Old Testament, God began building a plan and laying a foundation for the beautiful traditions of the Catholic Faith. That plan was ful illed by Jesus in the New Testament. Ful illed: Uncovering the Biblical Foundations of Catholicism is an apologetic approach to sharing the Catholic Faith using the Old Testament Tabernacle as a blueprint for God s plan. While it is designed as a faith-sharing Scripture study, you will also gain an understanding of some of the most questioned Catholic teachings. Ful illed will reignite your love of Scripture and help you share and defend the Catholic Faith with the Word of God. Part Two focuses on the elements found in the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle and how they connect to the Magisterium, the Eucharist, incense, Mary, and more. Part One focuses on the elements found in the outer sanctuary of the Tabernacle and how they connect to the liturgical calendar, the priesthood, purgatory, baptism, and more. 7 Sessions Starting January 14/15, 2019 Monday Evenings 7:00 8:30pm OR Tuesday Mornings 9:00 10:30am Ministry Center Social Hall Cost: $25.00 if new to Fullfilled; $20.00 if attended Part 1. REGISTRATION Contact Denise at or dstephen@sspeterandpaul.net. Registration deadline is Monday, January 7 th to guarantee materials by 1 st session. Supplemental questions will be offered which relate to the video shown. Saints Peter and Paul Church January 6, 2019 sspeterandpaul.net 4

5 Nourish is for anyone juggling the challenges of life, health, career and caring for an aging parent, grandparent, or spouse, in town or at a distance. Nourish provides family caregivers practical and emotional supports, shared experiences and useful tools, all with a Christ-centered view. Discover blessings in caring for another. January 24, pm in the Ministry Center Contact Paulette Shea at for more info. This month s topic: A Season for Everything Scripture reminds us, there is an appointed time for everything. Caregiving too is an ever-shifting period of loss and growth, solitude and rebirth. Our Catholic faith helps us recognize this ebb and flow, so we can embrace our purpose and direction. Be nourished. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authori es, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ~Ephesians 6:12 We Need Your Help! Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, January 18th. We have volunteers in one-hour shi s from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abor on clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abor on-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abor on clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abor on-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at or janecfonner@comcast.net for more informa on, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abor on. We will be meeting on Wednesday, January 9th, at 10am in the St. Paul Center to make prayer shawls for our parishioners who are sick or going through difficult times. If you know someone who would like a prayer shawl, we would be happy to wrap one up for them. For more information, call Paulette at Stay in the know! Sign up for parish s. 9 Walk the Walk: Following Christ as His Disciple by Dr. Tim Gray Being a disciple of Jesus has always been synonymous with being a Christian. From the Scriptures and from his own experience, biblical scholar Dr. Timothy Gray explains how Christian discipleship calls us to follow in the footsteps of Christ as engaged participants in God's plan, ordering our lives to bear witness to the Lord in our families, workplaces, communities, and to the world. After listening to Dr. Gray, I now realize that being a disciple of Christ is exciting and even dangerous at times! Steve - Chantilly, VA The scripture examples were perfect for driving home the point that following Jesus at distance can lead to denying Him. I've listened to this cd three times and each time I get something different to reflect on in my spiritual life. Mari - Tampa, FL We warmly welcome new families and individuals to Saints Peter and Paul. To register, please call or stop by the Parish Office during regular office hours. 10 Baptism Information The following norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect. We baptize at Saints Peter and Paul almost every Sunday of the month at 2:00pm. We do not schedule private baptisms. Please contact the parish office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $20. Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation Class at SSPP or at the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than 10 business days prior to the baptismal date. If required paperwork is not correctly submitted within that time, the baptism will be rescheduled. A Sponsor Certificate must be provided by each godparent - signed by a priest and with the church seal. Copies of the form will not be accepted. The Sponsor Certificate can be found on our website at: Godparents The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year Be a Catholic who has received their First Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared Not be the father or the mother The role to be undertaken means someone who: Is practicing their faith weekly Believes what the Church believes Is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life And has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness (which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate). A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live in the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female. The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. If in doubt, please contact the parish office prior to choosing your godparents. Baptism Preparation Class SSPP offers a Baptism prep class for parents on the first Monday of each month. If this is your first child, you must attend a class before receiving a date for your baby s baptism. (Both parents are asked to attend. Godparents are also welcome.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. To schedule a baptism please contact the Saints Peter and Paul parish office at: Saints Peter and Paul Church January 6, 2019 sspeterandpaul.net 10

11 Saint Vincent de Paul Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. The Savior of the world comes for the people in dark places. The real, lasting, and deep joy is that the Light shines there. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Light has shown; bringing real, lasting and deep joy to the hearts of the poor who live in dark places in our streets and neighborhoods. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.
