3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Page 3 Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, New Hymnal and Missal After consultation with our music department and our missal and hymnal committee, the parish has made the decision to purchase the Saint Michael Hymnal and Lumen Christi Missal. The new hymnals take into account both traditional and contemporary liturgical hymnody and the missal provides access to all the scripture readings for the Sundays and Solemnities of the Liturgical Year. As you know, major revisions were made to the liturgy throughout the Catholic Church a few years ago with the publishing of the New Roman Missal. It has taken the liturgical books for the congregation some time to catch up. These new books are the most up to date liturgical books available. The Missal also includes all of the entrance antiphons, communion antiphons and responses for the week day liturgy. This means that we will no longer need to purchase the quarterly missalette. We will begin using these two books for the liturgy which will replace the booklets now published on a weekly basis. There will still be a one page liturgical guide published weekly, but we will no longer publish the full booklet. Although we will take some to get accustomed to the change, they will be a great aid to our worship and there will be less paper waste. More will be forthcoming regarding a guide for their use as well as a start date. Please watch the bulletin for more details. Totus Tuus and VBS Congratulations to our religious education department for another successful VBS. We had 73 participants from our parish and 12 from Saint Raphael this year. Both of these numbers exceeding our attendance last year. The program was well received and a positive experience for the children involved. School Doors and Entrances The work on our school doors and entrances is well underway. I hope you like the new look. The doors will also increase security at our school for the safety of our children. The funds for these projects come from Pass It On and our school endowment funds. Fr. Dennis Spies and Fr. Douglas Martis This weekend is the first weekend that Fr. Dennis Spies is with us, he will be living with us at Saints Peter and Paul and assisting in his pastoral care. Fr. Dennis will begin his assignment to serve on the seminary faculty at Mundelein this Fall and will be ministering in our parish until the end of July. Fr. Douglas Martis will be back to assist us here at Saints Peter and Paul for these last two weeks of June. You might remember that Fr. Martis went to teach at the Pontifical College Josephinum this last January. Please welcome both, Fr. Dennis and Fr. Martis. Chapel Masses As in past years, Masses in the Holy Family Chapel will be moved to the parish church during the month of July. Typically, we experience decreased Mass attendance during the latter part of the summer and two Masses at those times are not justified. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota

5 Page 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Twas the week after VBS and all through the hall Not a creature was stirring; there were no kids at all The decorations were down, the Cave was no more And every last crumb had been swept off the floor We sang and we danced to start off our days, And learned Bible points to help us always. Jesus gives us hope and courage, direction and love, He gives us His power and guides from above. Follow Him! we would shout when we heard the day s point Bible buddies each day did not disappoint Radar and Flash and Mawtha and Sal, Don t forget Olivia, the last buddy pal. Clark Cavern would stumble and was always so scared But with plunger in hand he was well prepared We helped him to learn of Jesus, God s son And how by His death our redemption was won. We had fun playing games as we ran all around In the rocks that we smashed some geodes were found. KidVid made us think as we looked up each passage We walked on water; cornstarch gave us the advantage. We ended each day with a PowerPoint show That featured each group with all that they know. Let s not forget snacks; a favorite each day With ice cream sodas and trail mix after we pray. The Year of Mercy wasn t neglected; Loaves and Fishes will benefit from all we collected. Over 1000 items to fill up their shelves What a charitable way to feel pride in ourselves. So many memories bring a smile to my face Hope to see you next year, same time and same place! 7 CHRISTIAN SERVICE HAPPENINGS Saint Vincent de Paul Page 7 In today s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent messenger on ahead of Him. To be the messengers of God, we must know well what God wants to say and do through us, as He sends us out to bring his love to others. In the month of June, you were the messenger of God in bringing hope to the poor. Your gifts enabled the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to assist families, providing food and help with utility and rent bills. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ love and compassion to the poor. Transitional Housing Ministry With the average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in DuPage County at $1176 per month, housing costs continue to be a struggle for many families after they leave the Transitional Housing Ministry program. 10 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January June 26, 31, Page 10 LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER The opening lines of today s Gospel, When the days for Jesus being taken up were fulfilled, Jesus resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, contain within themselves the entirety of salvation history. Being taken up, points to Jesus being taken up or lifted up upon the cross, and to His Ascension into heaven and exultation. Through Jesus, man shares in the exaltation of the divine an exaltation accomplished through the Passion and death of God s divine Son at the hands of those He came to save. The Gospel tells us Jesus resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, which is literally translated, Jesus set His face toward Jerusalem. Luke s descriptive words tell us nothing was going to deter Him from His mission. Jesus mission had entailed preaching and healing those in Galilee, but now He turns toward Jerusalem, the city of destiny. In His deeds, Jesus fulfilled what He had said, I come to do, not my will, but the will of the Father. Jesus actions are foreshadowed in the first reading from Kings when Elijah the prophet, suddenly comes to Elisha while he is working in the fields and lays his mantle upon Elisha s shoulders. Elijah s mantel, or cloak, symbolizes his calling as God s prophet. Elisha, owning twelve yoke of oxen, was extremely wealthy, yet he cuts up his plow as fuel for the fire and feeds his people his oxen, abandoning everything he has in response to God s calling. Elisha was not some false prophet, living on the gifts given to the Temple. He was a wealthy, successful person, surrounded by family and friends, but he left everything to embrace God s will for him. Elisha s story prepares us for Jesus pronouncements in the second half of the Gospel sayings that are intended to shake us: Leave the dead to bury the dead. Leave your family when God calls you to and don t look back. Even Elisha paused to say goodbye. What is the message of these harsh words? The choice of Jesus to journey to Jerusalem clues us in. Nothing can come between us and the will of God not possessions, not family, and not our own ideas about our future. The abruptness of the message prompts us to examine our priorities and motivations. When we are faced with a decision, do we first ask what God s will is for us? Nothing so mirrors God in us than our freedom. We are free to choose the direction of our lives our careers, our spouses, and how we will spend our time and money. How do we use our freedom? St. Paul s letter to the Galatians reminds us we are called for freedom. Do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. Are our choices centered on serving ourselves to the exclusion of God and neighbor, or do we approach each moment with the question, What would God want me to do? How can I serve God and neighbor this day? Do our choices reflect our prayer, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done. So much of our life is caught up in doing our thing, but our exultation, our happiness ironically is only achievable when we choose to give up our own thing and choose God s. This is the irony of the Cross that St. Paul writes about. This is what Jesus meant in last week s Gospel that those who wish to save their life must lose it. Only in choosing to unite our will with the Father s, do we find peace, satisfaction, and fulfillment. Nothing in life is ever accomplished without great desires. So, too, we must desire to be holy with our whole heart, with our whole soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind (Deut. 6:4-5), for Jesus promised, To him who thirsts, I will give the fountain of life, freely (Rev. 21:6). And this directive is not reserved for monks or Mother Teresa s Missionaries of Charity. Dying to ourselves is completely contrary to our culture and our notion of freedom, but God calls us to trust Him like a child trusts his father, knowing that He only wishes our complete happiness, our exaltation at His right hand. God calls us to look beyond a life of gratification and toward eternity. 1 Joseph A. 11 BACK TO BASICS Page 11 Infallibility: Christ s Gift to the Church Most people, even non-catholics, probably have some notion that Catholics believe the Pope can speak infallibly. But many people, Catholic and non-catholic alike, have mistaken notions of what infallibility means and how it is exercised in the Church. In these next few bulletin articles we ll take a look at the meaning of infallibility applied to the teachings of the Church, and the various ways in which the Church can teach infallibly. So what do we mean by infallibility? Christ made certain promises to His Church. He told his apostles, He who hears you, hears me (Luke 10:16), so that in hearing the teachings of the apostles, we are hearing Christ Himself. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to lead his apostles into all truth (John 16:13). Jesus promised to remain with his Church to the end of time (Matthew 28:20). He gave the Church authority the authority to bind and loose (Matthew 16:19; 18:18). And Jesus promised that the gates of Hell would never prevail over His Church (Matthew 16:18). From these guarantees of Jesus, it follows that His Church could never fall into error. How could it be that the Son of God could establish a Church, promise His abiding presence, give His Church the gift of the Spirit of truth, and give that Church His authority all for that Church to end up teaching what is false? No, Christ s promises assure us that the Church will never fail to teach the whole truth of the Gospel in its purity. St. Paul even calls the Church the pillar and foundation of the truth (1 Tim 3:15). This freedom from error is obviously impossible for a merely human institution. Therefore, it must be a gift given by God. In order to preserve the Church in the purity of the faith handed on by the apostles, Christ who is the Truth willed to confer on her a share in his own infallibility (CCC 889). So that we can know with objective certainty that the faith we hold is the faith Christ handed on to the apostles, Christ endowed the Church's shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals (CCC 890). So infallibility means this: under certain well defined circumstances, by the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the Church cannot teach error in matters of faith and morals. Notice what infallibility is not: infallibility does not mean that every utterance of every leader of the Church is without error; there are certain conditions for exercising this gift that we will look at in upcoming weeks. Infallibility does not mean the Church can speak without error on any topic whatsoever; it must be in the realm of faith and morals. It doesn t mean such teachings use the best expressions possible, or cannot be given further clarity and depth later; it simply means such teachings contain to error. In the next few bulletin articles we ll look at the three ways by which the Church can teach with this gift of infallibility.
