1 NOVEMBER 4, st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Look at the crucifix and it will teach you everything St. Francis and the Tau Cross Due to the Tau s resemblance to the cross, this sign was very dear to St. Francis of Assisi; so much so that it occupied an important place in his life, as well as his gestures. In him the ancient prophetic sign was actualized, regained its saving power and expressed the beatitude of poverty, which is an essential element of the Franciscan way of life. The Saint of Assisi took hold of this sign in a manner so complete and intense that, at the end of his life and through the stigmata impressed in his flesh, he became the living image of the Tau that he had so often contemplated, drawn, and especially loved. The St. Francis Perpetual Adoration Chapel has been generously gifted with a first-class relic of St. Francis of Assisi. Come and pray with us. Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, November 16th. We have volunteers in one-hour shi s from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abor on clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abor on-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abor on clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abor on-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at or janecfonner@comcast.net for more informa on, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abor on. Book of the Deceased Beginning November 1st until the end of the month, we remember in a special way and pray for all those who have died, especially among our friends and family. Located near the Pieta statue at the back of the church will be a register where you are welcome to write the names of your deceased friends and family. 9 Pray Like a Saint by Ma hew Leonard We are taking a break over the holidays! We have finished a short book The Hearts of Fire and recommend this reading to all. We will meet again after the holidays to begin another exciting adventure in reading and sharing: Martyrs of today, they do exist. Please join us on Mondays in the Evangelization Center (corner of Benton & Brainard Streets) from 9:15-11:00am. In this talk, interna onally known speaker and author Ma hew Leonard defines and discusses the three tradi- onal stages of prayer. According to scripture, every one of us is called to "be perfect" and to "pray without ceasing." Prayer is the path to God and we've been saying prayers all our lives. But are we really praying? Ma hew lays out the prac cal steps to achieve union with God through deep prayer, even in the midst of this busy world. Really good stuff - definitely going to have to listen more than once. The guy was inspira onal, fluid. Good ps...great stuff! Dominic - Aurora, IL Just totally loved it! One of my favorites. Gave me some new ideas with praying. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul Luke 21:1 2 When he looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. On the surface, both actions appear the same people making contributions to the temple. As the story unfolds, however, we realize that the contributions are not equal. One gives from a surplus, the other from need. Whether it s our time, or our money, our giving stems from a desire to share what we have with others. It has to do with justice, and justice is based on love. In Scripture, we often see God s justice expressed through compassion for the sick, the poor, and the needy. As followers of Jesus, we honor others by treating them with the same compassion that God gives us. With whom can I share my time, talent, or treasure today? How willing am I to give from my need instead of my surplus? Compassionate God, you know the secrets of our hearts. Turn my offering, however small, into something useful for those whose needs you alone know. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Beginning in the irst chapters of Mark s Gospel, Jesus has had to contend with the hostility of the Jewish leaders the Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, and most especially, the scribes, the experts in the Law of Moses. In last week s Gospel, Jesus was confronted by the Sadducees who had hoped to trip Him up with a question about marriage and resurrection from the dead. Witnessing the brilliance of Jesus response, the scribe in today s Gospel raises a weightier question, What is the irst of all the commandments? What is noteworthy is that after hearing Jesus with an open mind, this scribe has come forward and approached Him with sincerity, hoping to learn from Him what is most pleasing to God. The encounter underscores the importance of our evangelical witness to Christ. Are others drawn to God by hearing and seeing us in the ordinary circumstances of life, particularly in moments of trial? This also emphasizes the importance of learning our faith and the basis for our beliefs so that we are prepared to respond to those who wish to tear it down hopefully, we will draw others to inquire further into the truth that we possess. Jesus response to the question is taken from Deuteronomy, as we heard in today s irst reading: "Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today." This injunction, which Jews refer to as the Shema, meaning to hear, implies that we are to love God and follow His will with our entire being, in every thought and action. As He witnessed in the Gospels, Jesus not only called upon others to love God entirely, He left us an example even to the point of death. Having just shared His teaching on the cost of discipleship with His disciples, Jesus now shares it with this expert in the Law. Unprompted, Jesus brings up the second weightiest commandment: And you shall love your neighbor as yourself, quoting from Leviticus 19:18, which summarizes those commandments dealing with love of neighbor. By tying these two commandments together, Jesus makes it clear that love of God is inseparable from love of neighbor. St. John s irst epistle reaf irms this point clearly: If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother (1 Jn 4:20). Jesus demonstrated His love for others, as He did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mk 10:45) 1. The exchange continues as the scribe af irms what Jesus has said, adding that without love of neighbor, prayers and sacri ices offered to God have no avail, summarizing the message for the prophets. Seeing and hearing the wisdom of the scribe s response mirroring the opening lines of the passage prompts Jesus to say, You are not far from the Kingdom of God. Notice the transformation that has taken place in this scribe since irst encountering Jesus. His journey to God is not yet complete, but he is very near. Jesus has taken his simple but sincere question and used it to further this man s faith, much like Nicodemus and the woman at the well in John s Gospel. The passage ends with, And no one dared to ask him anything more. Jesus has silenced His enemies who feared being further humiliated, and those drawn to Him are no doubt left wondering, Who is this who speaks with such wisdom? 1Joel Marcus, Mark 8-16, p See also pp For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church November 4, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net
