4 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authori es, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ~Ephesians 6:12 We Need Your Help! Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, August 17th. We have volunteers in one-hour shi s from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abor on clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abor on-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abor on clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abor on-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at or janecfonner@comcast.net for more informa on, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abor on. Saturday, September 8th at 1:00pm Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery (corner of North Ave. & Columbia) Naperville, IL On Saturday, September 8th, pro-life Americans throughout the country will gather at the gravesites of aborted babies and other memorial sites dedicated in their honor for the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. Solemn vigils will be held at these sites to commemorate the more than 59 million people who have lost their lives to legal abortion since 1973, and to remind our society of the humanity of the unborn child. For more information, please contact Deacon Joe Verdico at: or jverdico@sspeterandpaul.net. Together let us remember the victims of abortion and pray for a final end to this injustice in our land. 8 Religionless Spirituality by Dr. Tim Gray Renowned Scripture scholar and author, Dr. Tim Gray, provides a fascinating explanation of the importance of the visible Church and the centrality of God on Earth. He offers incredible insights that make clear the role of the Church as an essential part of God s plan for salvation, which are sure to help those who have left her, or who mistakenly claim to be spiritual, but not religious. Dr. Gray s presentation made it completely clear just how essential it is to know the story of the Church. Candace - Orlando, FL I am always amazed each time I learn more about my Catholic tradition, history, and story. It greatly enriches my Faith. Glory be to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit! John - Fort Collins, CO We have listened to DOZENS (over 50?) Lighthouse Talks over the years...we're junkies. This de initely ranks in the top 5. Dr. Gray's delivery was engaging, and his information valuable. It was information we had never heard before. His whole "Why Did Jesus Live?" angle was so enlightening. We have 3 teens, and they were riveted. My husband and I listened to it twice. The teens listen to Lighthouse talks in the evening before bed while they play chess and ping pong. I know this is one our teen boys will add to their ping pong play list. Kerry - Kansas City, MO Young Adult Missionary Opportunity! Love playing sports? Looking to serve the Church? Catholic Young Adults Sports is looking for missionaries to serve in the Joliet Diocese. One of the locations is Sts. Peter and Paul! Catholic Young Adult Sports (CYAS) is a Denver-based, young adult recreational sports outreach. Its mission is to build a community of fellowship through sports and socials that lead to discipleship through Bible studies, retreats, and mission trips. CYAS s core mission values are hospitable outreach, integrity, and Catholic orthodoxy. Every missionary plans and coordinates recreational sports league (basketball, ultimate, volleyball, etc.) and fun social events for young people. For more information, contact Paul Spotts at: info@catholicyoungadultsports.com. How to Be An Everyday Contemplative: What The Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Happiness, Meaning and Community Award-winning author and journalist Judith Valente will discuss how to live a more mindful and meaningful life based on the Rule of St. Benedict on Wednesday, September 12th from 9:15-11:15am at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Naperville. The Rule of St. Benedict is a treasury of timeless wisdom in which Benedict seeks to create a society that emphasizes community over competition; consensus over conflict; simplicity over consumption; service over self-interest; and quietude over the constant distractions of daily life. Valente will demonstrate how we can live the Benedictine values of listening, community, hospitality and balance outside of a monastic setting, and become "everyday contemplatives. Valente has worked for The Wall Street Journal, PBS-TV, The Washington Post, Chicago Public Radio, and regularly contributes articles to America magazine and US Catholic. Her poetic, yet down-to-earth style has made her a sought-after speaker and retreat leader. The event will be held in St. Margaret Mary s Cor Center. An $8 per person donation is requested. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul If St. Vincent de Paul was able to do so much for the poor of his day, it was because with his mind and heart he had come to know something of the length and breadth, the height and depth of the love of God that is in the heart of Jesus. As children of God, we must constantly be convincing ourselves in prayer of the excessive love with which God has reached out and is still reaching out to us each day and each moment of the day. If we are not convinced that God loves us as we are, even with our frailties, it will be very difficult for us to show the love of God to the poor. It is the work of humble prayer to come to know oneself as a person who is loved by God. It is the work of humble prayer to share that experience with the poor and to convince them that God cares for them. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p292) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, please call NEWS FROM THE KNIGHTS Knights of Columbus Council No E. All of the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The Knights also have an insurance program that has a top notch rating. For more information, please contact our Grand Knight, Tom Rogers at or our Membership Director, Nick Thompson at The Kaycee Cub Hall is available for parties and meetings. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner In today s Gospel from John 6:41-51, the Jews murmur at Jesus revelation that He is the true Bread come down from Heaven, and that those who eat this bread will live forever. Jesus, who promises to lead us out of slavery to sin, to feed us with His very self, receives the same reception that Moses received when he led the Israelites out of Egypt. Pursued by Pharaoh s army, the Israelites murmured against Moses, Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Would we not be better to return to Egypt? (Numbers 14:2-3) Spared from Pharaoh s army, though later in want of food, the people again grumble, If only we had died at the Lord s hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our kettles of meat and ate our fill of bread! But you have led us into this wilderness to die of famine! (Exodus 16.2) Though the crowd had just been fed by Jesus from five barley loaves and a few fish, they now find His claim that He is the true bread come down from heaven incredulous. How can this man claim to be from God? Do we not know his kinsfolk? Jesus responds to their murmuring by simply saying, Unless the Father draws him, no one can come to me. If only they desist from their murmuring and their unbelief, God will open their hearts and minds to Jesus who will raise them up on the last day. 1 The bread from heaven sent to the Iraelites in the wilderness was a sign, or revelation, from God of His providential love for them. Jesus, the true Bread from heaven, is the perfect sign or revelation from God of His love for us. If we but desist from our unbelief, our excuses, and our fears, God can open our hearts and minds to Jesus who will raise us up on the last day. We need only to remain open to His promptings of grace. Isaiah prophesized that when the Messiah came the people would be taught by God. In Jesus, this prophesy is fulfilled in a way that far exceeded any expectation: God Himself, in the person of Jesus, teaching us about the Father. The crowd failed to recognize Him because they refused to believe that God could reveal Himself in the midst of their ordinary lives. Is this not the carpenter s son? The crowd failed to recognize Him because they were looking for someone to free them from the Romans while Jesus was offering to free them for eternity. In the midst of our daily lives, Jesus reveals Himself to us and invites us to eternal life. We are not expected to abandon our work or our families, which are our daily obligations; we are called to recognize Him in the midst of all these things. It is in the midst of the ordinary, the material, and the mundane, that God will reveal Himself to us if we stop our murmuring and grumbling, and allow God to speak to our hearts. St. Josemaria Escriva wisely instructed, Your ordinary contact with God takes place where your fellow men, your yearnings, your work and your affections are. There you have your daily encounter with Christ. It is in the midst of the most material things of the earth that we must sanctify ourselves, serving God and all mankind. 2 It is in the midst of these things that His will is revealed to us and we are called to raise our hearts and minds to God. 1 The Gospel According to John, The Anchor Bible, Volume 29, Raymond E. Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com. PRAYER NETWORK Sunday 8am Monday 1am Monday 9am Wednesday 3am St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Please call Jay Albarran at Friday 10am Saturday 8am Saturday 9pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For visiting family reunion members. 2. For Father Brad Baker. *Due to the ongoing repairs of the air conditioning system in the Chapel, only two candles will be at the altar of our Lord.
