Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, July 20th. We have volunteers in one-hour shi s from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abor- on clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abor on-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abor on clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abor on-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul Vincentians are nonjudgmental. A nonjudgmental attitude excludes assigning guilt or responsibility for a person's needs or problems. Vincentians must and do make assessments of the facts, not to determine moral worth but to discern strengths and weaknesses. The people we serve will not reveal their true selves or deeper needs to someone prone to criticize them. When uncertain about the truthfulness of a story, Vincentians give the person telling it the benefit of the doubt. We do not reward deception, but try, by getting to know the person better, to get to the real problems beneath the surface. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel is taken from Mark: 6:7-13 where for the third time Jesus summoned His disciples. The first occurs in Mark 1:16-20 where Jesus called Simon and Andrew: Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, and then a little further on, He called James and John. Once called, they immediately left their nets and followed him. Something about Jesus attracted these men to abandon everything and follow Him like the crowds that followed Jesus, they watched Him and listened to His words with awe and wonder. The second summons is in Mark 3:7-12 when Jesus, pursued by the multitude and those seeking healing, withdrew with his disciples to the lake. Recognizing His human limitations and the little time remaining of His life on earth, Jesus withdrew so that He might instruct His disciples who would be called upon to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Jesus left the crowds, not because He was abandoning them, but because His disciples, after being filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, will further instruct the crowds so that they may come to know Christ in light of His death and resurrection. The third summons of the disciples occurs in today s Gospel. Jesus sends the disciples out two by two in order to preach, heal, and expel demons. They return rejoicing at the wonders they were able to accomplish through Jesus name. They go out with nothing but sandals on their feet like the Israelites who hastily left Egypt during the Exodus, relying solely on God to provide for them. The first exodus foreshadows the New Exodus that Jesus ushers in with His death and resurrection an exodus not from the clutches of human bondage, but from the bondage of selfishness and sin that has led to enormous suffering in the world. Jesus leads us through the waters of baptism where we rise full of life, full of joy, full of the Godhead. These three callings foreshadow the evolution of our own faith in Christ. Initially, there is something that attracts us to Christ something that grabs our attention and keeps us going to Mass, even if the attraction at times wanes. At these moments we must decide whether to continue to follow Jesus or fall away like the crowds or outwardly reject Him like the Jewish leaders. If we choose to continue the journey, Jesus invites us into closer intimacy with Him. Jesus invites us to withdraw from our daily cares, perhaps by lingering longer after Mass, making a holy hour, reading the Scriptures, praying a rosary, or attending daily Mass more frequently. Gradually, if we persist, Jesus becomes more than a miracle worker; rather, we recognize Him as a brother; a friend; the Redeemer; the Second Person of the Trinity, who wants to remain in communion with us. The third summons is often the most difficult. Here Jesus calls us to leave the intimacy of prayer and go back among the crowds, who are sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile, to preach, heal, and even cast out demons. How can we preach or heal or cast out demons when we are not apostles? Just as Jesus told His disciples, He tells us: Amen, Amen, I say to you, He that believes in me, he shall do the works that I do; and greater works besides (John 14:12). As disciples, we preach the Gospel of Christ first and foremost in the way we love our families, our colleagues, our neighbors, and especially strangers and the poor. As St. Francis enjoins us, Preach the Gospel continuously, and when necessary, use words. We are called to heroic love, which the Church refers to as a white martyrdom. What attracted the Apostles to Jesus? What prompted them to abandon everything to follow Him? Undoubtedly, it was Jesus love for each person He met, including the blind, the downcast, the lame, and the sinner and most notably, all those for whom society has no time. What will attract the world to Jesus? It is our love for each person we meet, all whom society has cast off, as well as those very near to us. It was this love that moved the early Roman pagans to consider the Christian message: See what love these Christians have for one another. 1 Do we love in such a way so as to attract the attention of others to Christ? Why not? Today, Christ calls you to that degree of love. Follow Him. 1 Tertullian For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church July 15, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11

Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com. PRAYER NETWORK Monday 9am Monday 10am Monday 1pm Wednesday 3am Wednesday 6pm St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Please call Jay Albarran at Thursday 8am Friday 10am Friday 12pm Saturday 10pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For Beau's well being. 2. For all victimized children of abuse. 3. For relief from debt and the Lord's help. 4. For Albert Bertus good health and sound mind. 5. For visiting family reunion. 6.
