Ms. Kleist shared her academic and career path that led her to CBS Chicago. After the assembly, Ms. Kleist moved outside for the 11a.m. live broadcast from the mobile weather lab where several of our students were on air and helped her to report the weather. 11 November 5, 2017 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Matthew s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel from Matthew 23:1-12 is mirrored after the condemnation of the scribes in Mark 12:38-40: In the course of his teaching he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greet ings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation. 1 Here, at the beginning of Matthew Chapter 23, Jesus also accuses the Pharisees of hypocrisy while ending the chapter with the accusation of murder the Pharisees go from bad to worse. 2 Jesus directs the message to His disciples and the crowd, reminding us of its application to those who wish to follow Him. By acknowledging that the scribes and Pharisees occupy the seat of Moses, He recognizes their teaching authority but rejects their failure to live out the Law and the Prophets: As their words attest, the scribes and Pharisees know the truth and often teach it, but they do not live the truth. 3 In the first reading the Prophet Malachi, writing 516 years before the birth of Christ, condemns the Levite priests: You have turned aside from the way, and have caused many to falter by your instruction (Mal 2:8). Similarly, Christ condemns the scribes and the Pharisees who have laid a heavy burden on others shoulders with no intention of carrying it themselves or lifting so much as a finger to help them. 4 The Pharisees burdened others and exaggerated religious practices so that they might be applauded for pious show. 5 They feigned humility but sought out the favored place at table and in the Temple. They enjoyed the praise of men, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation Rabbi (teacher) (Mt 23:8). Now, contrast the scribes and the Pharisees with the example of St. Paul in today s second reading: With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us. You recall, brothers and sisters, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. (1 Thes 2:7-9,13) Jesus tells His disciples to listen to the Pharisees but not imitate them. Those who wish to follow Him must serve the rest. He tells them, Let no one among you be called father, teacher, or master, so they might recognize that all authority derives from God the Father. Fathers, teachers, or masters must be the servants of others, not lording over them, not seeking recognition, for whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted (Mt 23:12). Does Jesus really forbid us from these terms for our earthly father, teachers, and superiors? No, persons are called father, for example, 124 times in the New Testament, and Jesus himself referred to others as father: What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? (Lk 11:11). St Stephen, the first Christian martyr, calls Abraham the father of the people of Israel (Acts 7:2). St. Paul calls Abraham the father of faith (Rom 4:12) and calls himself the spiritual father of those he brought to Christ: I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. Therefore be imitators of me. For this reason I am sending you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord (1 Cor. 4:15-16). St. Paul understood that earthly fatherhood is a sharing in the Fatherhood of God (Eph. 3:14-15) 7. Jesus does not prohibit recognizing our earthly father or referring to priests as our spiritual fathers; rather, He demands that those who share in God s Fatherhood nurture, protect, and guide those in their care and walk humbly before God. He demands the same of those called teachers and superiors. 1 Most scripture scholars assert that Mathew relied upon Mark s Gospel as well as a collection(s) of sayings of Jesus in writing his Gospel. Mark s Gospel also provides the general framework for Luke s Gospel. 2 Davies and Allison, Matthew International Critical Commentary, p Ibid. p Ibid. p Ibid. 6 Fr. Mario P. Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7 Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com. St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For the Holy Souls in purgatory. 2. For the intentions of our Holy Father. 3. For complete healing of all troubled marriages. 4. For the protection of the unborn. 5. For all of our Priests and Deacons. 6. For all our Seminarians and Religious. PRAYER NETWORK Sunday 11am Saturday 7pm Saturday 10pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.
