3 July 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Our country celebrates a great event this week and our parish celebrated our Patronal Feast Day this last June 29th. Here is some information on our parish patron saints: Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul St. Peter, originally known as Simon, was the son of a man named John, and his brother s name was Andrew. We also know that he was married, since Jesus cured his mother-in-law at the family home at Bethsaida in Gallilee (Mark 11:30). A fisherman by trade, Jesus was to call Peter, along with his brother and James and John, to leave everything behind to become His followers and to catch people s souls in their nets (Matthew 4:19). It is because of Peter s confession of faith in Jesus as Messiah that Jesus gave him the nickname of rock and stated that it was upon the rock of Peter s faith that the Church would rise (Matthew 16:18). All the Gospel writers list Peter first when naming the apostles of Jesus, and there is no doubt that Peter was the first among equals in the minds of the earliest Christians. Time and again in the Gospels, however, Peter demonstrates that his faith is imperfect, but growing. He says things that make Jesus react strongly: he denies that Jesus coming death should ever be allowed to happen (Matthew 16:22), tells Jesus at the last supper that He will never wash his feet (John 13:8), and denies association with Jesus three times, even after Jesus predicted that he would do so (Luke 22:61). St. Peter can show us how difficult discipleship can truly be, but is also an example of the Lord choosing the weak and making them strong in bearing witness to Him. Peter was martyred (crucified upside down on a cross) for the Faith in the year 64 in Rome, the city he served as its first bishop. His successors in that office, who exercise the ministry of Bishop of Rome to this day, are given a primacy of honor and jurisdiction among all the world s bishops and are known by the familiar title of Pope. St. Peter s feasts are June 29 th (Saints Peter and Paul, our parish s patronal feast), and February 22 nd ( the feast of the primacy of St. Peter). St. Paul s background and journey of faith is somewhat different from St. Peter s. Paul, who was originally known as Saul, was an educated Jew and a member of the Pharisee party, as well as being a Roman citizen. He first appears in the pages of Scripture in Acts 7:58, as being present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the first of Jesus followers to be put to death because of his faith in Jesus. Saul persecuted the Christians savagely, but was dramatically converted to the very One he had been persecuting after seeing Jesus in a vision (Acts 9:4). From that time on, Saul, who was now known as Paul, poured the same energy with which he persecuted Christ s followers into bringing the Gospel of Jesus to as many people as he could. Paul traveled around most of what was the Roman Empire, establishing Christian communities and witnessing to the Risen Jesus, while asserting that he, too, was one of the Apostles, although one born out of the normal course (1 Corintheans 15:8). In his many letters to the various Christian communities he established (or those written by others with his approval), today, form the bulk of the writings of the New Testament. Paul was also martyred at Rome, three years after St. Peter, in the year 67 AD, by being beheaded (his Roman citizenship would not permit his being crucified). The feast commemorating his conversion is kept on January 25. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota

4 July 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 4 June 21 to July 4th As we celebrate Independence Day, we remember not only our Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence, but all those who fought and gave their lives so that we might be free. We pray for those still fighting for those freedoms and ask God's choicest blessings upon our great nation. Still, we must not take these liberties for granted. The U.S. bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a two-week period of prayer and action, to address many current challenges to religious liberty. They have asked us to pray the following in support of religious freedom in our nation: Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. About Contributions. Did you know you could set up automatic donations? The enrollment and set up process is straightforward. It is an experience that will inspire you to dig deeper than you ever imagined...and a desire to build a more meaningful relationship than you might have thought possible. Blessed are the Couples! 8 July 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 8 BAPTISM INFORMATION What about Baptism? Do you want to have your child baptized? What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested norms. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore the inability for Ss. Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words. 1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason. 2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 868,2. Godparents When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it. This Godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year. 3 Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. 4 Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 5 Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared. 6 Not be the father or the mother. 7 A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life. A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate. 8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female. 9 The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological parents who are of the same sex so it is impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing the godparents. They will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godparents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements. 3 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1. 5 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 7 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 9 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 6 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 8 CIC 1983, canon 874, 2 SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on the 1st Monday of each month beginning at 7:30 PM in the St. Paul Center for the New Evangelization (formerly called Pastoral Hall). Our next class is Monday, July 10th. If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby s baptism. Both, mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend. Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office, (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Ss. Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to provide a letter of verification. We baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month at 2 PM. Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized to four. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $ Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than ten (10) business days prior to the baptismal date, or your date will be rescheduled. This includes all necessary information regarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation classes and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and community, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.

10 July 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 10 Matthew s Gospel Corner July 2 nd, 2017 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Gospel from Matthew 10:37-42 is the conclusion of Jesus Missionary Discourse where He instructs His Apostles and future disciples about the Christian life and their missionary role. The Missionary Discourse begins in Mt 10:5-15 after Jesus has called His Apostles. He enjoins them to proclaim that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Now is the decisive moment. Now is the time to examine one s life in light of eternity. For the night is far advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness [and] put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12). Matthew 10:16-23 warns the disciples that as they live out the call to discipleship, they will have a share in Christ s sufferings. As He was rejected, they too will be rejected. As He bore the weight of the cross, they too will bear its burden. As He died in obedience to the Father, His disciples must too, in obedience, die to self. Matthew 10:26-33 assures the disciples that as they share in the sufferings of Christ, so will they share in His life and resurrection, that the trials of this life are lessened in light of eternity and that God is a faithful Father who accompanies His children on this journey. Unbounded faith in God courageously looks beyond this world and the boundary of death to the eschatological future which God will give to his own. In today s Gospel Matthew reinforces the themes previously made in the Missionary Discourse, specifically, that living for God must be our first and foremost priority. Everything else, even love of family and neighbor is done in Christ and for Christ. In doing so we are called to take up our cross. As Christians we live no longer for ourselves but for Him (2 Corinthians 5:15). True love entails tremendous self-denunciation. Few themes are emphasized more in the Gospels than the duty to deny oneself and take up the cross in imitation of Christ. It is the cross that most perfectly symbolizes love. It is the irony of the cross that in denying oneself, one finds life. To understand the purpose of the cross is to understand the purpose of life. [He] who loses his life in this world because he looks only to God will win it for the world to come; and he who wins his life for this world, that is, seeks to secure his earthly existence will lose it in the world to come. As St. Paul told the Romans, he tells us: if we wish to be joined to Christ in the newness of life bestowed in baptism, we must be joined to Christ in His death. In most instances, this comes about by living out our vocation with love, patience, kindness, and understanding. Small acts of self-denial can strengthen us for unexpected trials and temptations. Proclaiming the Kingdom of God by giving of our time and resources is another way of sharing in the death of Christ. Let us then aspire to please Him (2 Corinthians 5:14) who loved us and gave Himself up for us (Ephesians 5:2). 1Davis and Allison, Mathew 8-18, International Critical Commentary, p Ibid For more information about Matthew s Gospel Corner Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com
