When using a plain white or temporary envelope (like the one pictured below), please remember to include your envelope number on either your check or somewhere on the envelope. This will help us give you proper credit for your donation. Thank you for your continued support. Actual Fiscal Year-to-Date Average Sunday Collections (31 Sundays) $ 47, Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge your gift to the CMAA! This is Commitment Weekend, when we are all asked to pledge our support for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). As Bishop Conlon shared in his homily today, God calls all of us to be His partners in caring for those in need in the Diocese of Joliet. The CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit so many and allow us to do God s work here on earth. Our parish could not possibly accomplish all that the Diocese is able to without all of us working together. Our parish s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $204,500. If we raise more than this goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to the parish. Please prayerfully reflect on how you can best support this year s CMAA and complete an in-pew envelope today. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It begins on Valentine s Day this year. Fitting. Forty Days to fall in love again, to stay in love with the One whose Baptism we share. Let us return with great hope to these special days for fasting, praying, and giving. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul Vincentian Meditation Pope John Paul II says to the laity: There cannot be two parallel lives in your existence as lay men and women: on the one hand, the so-called spiritual life, with its values and demands; on the other, the so-called secular life, that is life in a family, at work, social relationships, in the responsibilities of public life and in culture. Every activity, every situation, every precise responsibility are the occasions ordained by Providence for a continuous exercise of faith, hope and charity. (US Manual of the SVDP, p.59) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel from Mark 1:40-45 recounts the healing of a leper who sought out Jesus. His faith is exhibited in his simple plea, If you wish, you can heal me. This is the third episode in just the first chapter of Mark where Jesus has healed the sick, but this healing is even more poignant as Leviticus required the victim of leprosy to be cast out of the community and announce to anyone nearby, Unclean, unclean! Beyond the physical pain endured were rejection, loneliness, and the hardship of living adrift. Mark tells us that Jesus was moved with pity. Biblical scholars wrestle with determining the correct verb intended in this verse. Our reading uses σπλαγχνισθεὶς, translated as moved with pity, which is certainly consistent with how Jesus responded to those in need. Some ancient manuscripts, however, have the Greek, ὀργισθεὶς, meaning incensed, enraged, growled. This same verb is used two verses later in Mark 1:43 when Jesus sternly instructs the man to say nothing to others about his cure and in John 11:33, 38 when Jesus, incensed at the death of his friend Lazarus, restores him to life. Some translations of John have ἐμβριμώμενος, meaning that Jesus was deeply moved. There is a sense that Jesus is both moved to pity for the one who is suffering or has died, as well as incensed/enraged by the consequences of sin. 1 Jesus outburst is akin to His rebuke of the demon in Mark 1: Jesus anger, however, is not directed at the man, but at the evil that brought about his suffering and rejection. Jesus casts out this evil in the same way that He casts out the devil because it is ultimately sin that has brought about sickness and death. Evil, suffering, and death are not the works of God, but are the consequences of sin. As in the healing of Simon Peter s mother-in-law, Jesus stretched out His hand, touched the man, and cured him. Once again we see the healing touch of Christ. In contrast to those in today s first reading who fear touching a leper lest they become unclean, Jesus has no hesitation. Ironically, Jesus is not made unclean; rather, the man is made clean. Jesus tells him to go and show himself to the priests as He respects Jewish law and follows it. He also tells the man not to tell anyone what He has done for him, but the man goes and tells everyone so that Jesus can no longer go about freely. What a twist! The leper can now go about freely and announce the Good News, while Jesus cannot. In turn, the message now goes beyond Galilee and even abroad and all those who hear come to Jesus. The Sacrament of Reconciliation heals us and restores our relationship with God and can also lead to reconciliation with family members andothers. Our Lord recognizes our misery and is moved to pity. He stands ready to cast out the selfishness and evil within us if we approach Him. Once healed, we are compelled to immediately go and announce to all what God has done for us in the hope that others too may come to Jesus. 1 Wessel, Expositor s Bible Commentary, Mark, pp For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church February 11, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 11
