3 October 29, 2017 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Thank you! Thank you! I recently experienced these words in a nearly miraculous and baffling way. They came from my mother, an advanced Alzheimer s patient barely able to speak. I was baffled because they were spoken to me. Why was I baffled? Although my mother now lives with me in the rectory (my father foots the bill for her care) and I bear a great many responsibilities for her care, I owe her much more than I could ever repay. The point here is not that she does not need to thank me, but that I should be thanking her. How many times did she sit up with me at night when I was sick? How many diapers did she change? She gave me the gift of life. Without her faith and example, I would most certainly have never answered the call to be a priest. Gratitude to Saints Peter and Paul I have a great deal for which to thank Saints Peter and Paul Parish. I am grateful to so many who were generous with their words and gifts as I celebrated 25 years of priesthood this last year. I am grateful for the beginning given me here so many years ago as a young priest. The ability to experience the love and support of so many has left me with an incredible sense of thanksgiving to those who have been generous to me personally. Many of you feel the same way. Many of you have expressed gratitude for gifts you have received through the ministry of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. Perhaps you received the generosity of the parish through the parish subsidy which keeps our school tuition more than $1,000 lower than it would be. Perhaps you received a visit from one of our communion ministers in your home or at the hospital. Perhaps you attended Religious Education classes and received your sacraments here. Perhaps you are one of those who receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the many confession times we offer each week. No doubt, many of you feel the same sense of wonder and bafflement when our Lord and His Church turn and thank you for your generosity. How can Jesus Christ, who gave His life on the cross for us, thank me? How can Almighty God who created me in His image and likeness turn to me and ask for assistance? He does! God involves us in His redeeming work when He asks us to contribute to the good of His Church and the community that has sacrificed so much for us. Indeed, the very existence and mission of our parish depends on the continued generosity of our parishioners! When you make your donation to Saints Peter and Paul Parish each week, you are giving to Christ in service to His people this means you are directly participating in the ministry and welfare of the Church, which benefits you, your family and your friends. If you have or have had a child in our parish school, you have experienced the generosity of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in paying the portion of the cost your tuition dollars do not pay. If you have or have had a child in our Religious Education program, you have experienced the generosity of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. If you have gone to confession, received Communion, had a minister visit your home, you have received the generosity of your fellow parishioners. Saints Peter and Paul Parishioners need your help. Thank you for taking the time to reflect on the many reasons you and I have for being thankful to God and His Church. How will you make a return of the goodness God has showered upon you? Is your giving commensurate with the spiritual and other benefits you and your family and friends have received from God and His Church? Please consider increasing your weekly donation to the parish. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota

7 October 29, 2017 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 7 The Baseball Priest by Fr. Burke Masters More gripping than the pull of professional sports, the call to the priesthood reveals the great plans God has for those he has called. In this homily, Fr. Burke Masters tells the story of his journey through baseball, to Catholicism and eventually to the priesthood. In a bonus segment, Major League Baseball all-star Mike Sweeney discuss being the perfect teammate with examples from his time in the pros. 10 October 29, 2017 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 10 Christian Service Happenings And More Saint Vincent de Paul In this Sunday s Gospel, we find the truth that loving God isn t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but that it must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to show that we, indeed, love our neighbors by assisting families with food, utility bills, and rent. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to -person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 October 29, 2017 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Matthew s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel continues the hostility aimed at Jesus by the leaders of Israel which began in Matthew 21:23. It begins with: "When the Pharisees heard that he (Jesus) had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together." Mathew uses the Greek word, ἐφίμωσεν, to silence, to tie shut, to muzzle, meaning that the Sadducees not only remained silent, but they were incapable of responding to Jesus s words regarding the Resurrection (Mt 22:23 33). The Pharisees and Sadducees disagreed on many theological points, but here and in Matthew 16:2 they are one as they conspire against Jesus, as was foretold in Psalm 2:2: "The rulers conspire together against the Lord and His Anointed One." 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees did not seek to understand; they did not seek truth; rather, they sought to trip up, ensnare, and foil the One who threatened their way of life, their status quo. This learned Pharisee sought to test and cause Jesus to stumble, much like the devil did when he tempted Jesus three times in the desert (Mt 4:1 11). As such, the Pharisee asks Jesus, What is the greatest commandment? By this time in Jewish history, the law and its application to daily life included 613 injunctions. In Jesus's response, He unites all of the law and the prophets, that is all of Scripture, in a way everyone can grasp. Jesus makes clear that love of God is inseparable from love of neighbor. The first part of Jesus's response is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4 6, which Jews refer to as the Shema : Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength. We are commanded to give ourselves whole and entire to Him, undivided. The passage continues with the injunction to keep this teaching ever before them, reciting it twice a day and teaching it to their children. Some Jews went so far as to place a small leather box called a phylactery on their foreheads, which contained in it this Scripture passage. The Shroud of Turin, believed to be Jesus's burial linen, shows such a phylactery. What is transformational in Jesus's response is that He joins Deuteronomy 6:4 6 with Leviticus 19:18: Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." This commandment to love is not an emotional one, but an act of the will, to be for others alter Christus, another Christ. This passage from Leviticus is quoted three times in Matthew's Gospel, more than any other Old Testament passage. In Matthew 5:43 we are told that our neighbor is not simply those close to us, but includes even our enemies. And to love one s enemies does not simply mean not seeking revenge or holding grudges, but actively working for their good. Jesus s commandment goes far beyond the Jewish understanding of Leviticus 19:18. In Matthew 19:19 we learn that Leviticus 19:18 embodies all of the Decalogue (the Ten Commandments), some relate to what is owed to God, others, to our neighbor. In today's Gospel, specifically Matthew 22:39, Jesus tells us that love of God is inseparable from love of neighbor, who include even those who hate us and do us harm. 2 We are to love God and others with our entire self, undivided, unreservedly. Once again, Jesus s words left the Pharisees, scribes, and Sadducees speechless. It is this love of neighbor that distinguished the early Christians and made the Faith so attractive to those outside the Church. Sacrificial love, in which we are broken and spent, 3 can again fill our Churches. 1 Davies and Allison, Matthew 19-28, International Critical Commentary, p Ibid, p Ibid, p For more information about Matthew s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com

Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1.
