3 Page Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Please Make a Generous Gift Consider Pledging This weekend at each Mass we are privileged to participate in our diocesan-wide Commitment/In-Pew Weekend for the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). The CMAA is much different than a onetime special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a pledge and pay it in 10 payments. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of our Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you prayerful consider a pledge to the CMAA, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. God extends His mercy to us each day, and you can be a part of Extending God s Mercy to others through the CMAA. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference, because all parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry, and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese. For those of you, who were unable to make a decision about your commitment this weekend, please prayerfully consider doing so online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or by returning a Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelope to the parish next week. If you received a pledge form in the mail, you may return it via mail. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $192,199 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Lent - What should I do for Lent? Lent begins this Wednesday and the parish would like to give you a gift to guide your spiritual renewal during this Penitential season. We have included in the bulletin this week a stuffer with suggestions of what can be done in each of the three traditional categories of Lenten practice: Prayer, Penance and Almsgiving. Ash Wednesday All Masses on Ash Wednesday will be in the parish church and not in the Holy Family Chapel. Free Book for Lent This Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, Sr. Sandra's New Evangelization Team will be handing out copies of Archbishop Sartain's new book: "A Lenten Pilgrimage," while they last. The small book contains a short reflection for each day of Lent. We ask that each (continued on next page)

4 Page 4 (continued from previous page) family take only one copy and share or perhaps use it as a reflection before your meal together each day or as you all prepare to begin your day together. Each reflection will only take about 2 minutes and can be a wonderful way to set the spiritual tone for each day of Lent. If you would like more copies or you did not receive a copy, please log onto the "Our Sunday Visitor" webpage at Stations of the Cross and Fish Fry Fish Fry begins again this Friday! Please don't miss the best fish in town and thank you to our Knights of Columbus and all other supporters. Fish Fry begins at 5:00 pm in the Social Hall in the Ministry Center. Please do not forget that Stations of the Cross will be held in the parish church every Friday at 7 pm. Please join our Lord on His Way to Calvary. Parish Mission Trending for Eternal Life Father Douglas Martis will be offering our parish mission, preaching most of the Masses here on the weekend of March 1 st and speaking at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm on Monday, March 2nd, and Tuesday, March 3 rd. Father will address the theme Trending for Eternal Life: Daily life in the light of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Annual Appeal This week Bishop Conlon is speaking at all of the Masses at every parish in the Diocese. It is amazing how he is able to do that. Please contribute generously to the Annual Appeal. Our goal this year is $192,000 which is $10,000 higher than last year. Ministry Fair Please stop down at the Ministry Fair held after the 8 am, 9:30 am and 11 am Masses. Visit with parishioners regarding the many wonderful ministries in which they are involved here at the parish. There will be refreshments after each of these Masses as well. Sisters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George The Sisters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George are speaking at all of the Masses this weekend. The Sisters of Saint Francis run hospitals and schools and will be telling us about religious life in their community. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to their mission. There will be envelopes in the pews next week. Please make checks payable to Saints Peter and Paul Parish but designate that the donation should go to the Sisters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George on the envelope. There will be a dinner with the sisters held on Saturday evening for all those young women high school through young adult who might want to find out more about religious life. If you or someone you know may be interested in attending this dinner, please be in touch with Father Borello at the parish office. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota

LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. PLEASE TAKE NOTE! Due to the sanctuary restoration, all weekday Masses, confessions and prayer services will be held in the Holy Family Chapel in the Ministry Center unless otherwise indicated. MASSES ON SUNDAYS AND SATURDAY EVENINGS WILL CONTINUE TO BE CELEBRATED IN THE PARISH CHURCH. **Confessions and Rosary on Tuesday evenings and all Ash Wednesday Masses will be held in the church.

9 Page 9 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel, taken from Mark 1:40-45, recounts the healing of a leper who sought out Jesus to heal him. His faith is exhibited in his simple plea, If you wish, you can heal me. This is the third episode in just the first chapter where Jesus healed the sick. This healing is even more poignant as Leviticus required that the victim of leprosy be cast out of the community and announce to anyone nearby, Unclean, unclean! Beyond the physical pain endured were rejection, loneliness, and the hardship of living adrift. Jesus responds with pity, I do will it, and in an instant the leper is restored. The healing has overtones of an exorcism. In the original Greek, it says that Jesus became incensed, growled and immediately cast him out. Why would Jesus be incensed with this man s request, growl and cast him out? Jesus outburst is akin to His rebuke of the demon in Mark 1: And the wording cast him out is the same language used when Jesus casts out demons. Jesus anger is not directed at the man, but at the evil that brought about his suffering and rejection. Jesus casts out this plague in the same way that He casts out the devil because it is ultimately sin, original sin, which brought about sickness and death. Evil, suffering, and death are not the works of God but are the consequences of sin. As in the healing of Simon s mother-in-law, Jesus stretched out His hand, touched the man, and healed him. Under Jewish law to touch a leper is to touch the dead which makes one unclean. Jesus here will ritually embrace death to give him life. In the Passion He will experience death to give us eternal life. Jesus tells him to go and show himself to the priests because Jesus respects Jewish law and follows it. He also tells the man not to tell anyone what He has done for him, but the man goes and tells everyone so that Jesus can no longer go about freely. What a twist! The leper can now go about freely and announce the good news, while Jesus cannot. In turn, the message now goes beyond Galilee and even abroad. The Sacrament of Reconciliation heals us in an instant, restoring our relationship with God and the faith community, and it can also lead to reconciliation at home and with family. Once healed, how can we not go everywhere, even abroad proclaiming what God has done for us? If you have questions, Bob at marksgospelcorner@gmail.com. 12 Page 12 Christian Service Happenings As we continue to explore the various charitable organizations assisted by the members of Ss. Peter and Paul parish, we present today a summary of one of Aurora s major organizations assisting the poor and homeless, which benefits from the donated resources of SSPP s parishioners. Those donations, overseen by the SSPP Christian Service Commission, assist Hesed House of Aurora and many other needy organizations, which will be discussed in future CSC articles. Thank you sincerely for your continued generosity in the Sunday Offertory collections. Hesed House is the second largest homeless shelter in the state of Illinois, caring for roughly 400 men, women and children each and every day. (A newly homeless person walks through the Hesed House front door every 8 1/2 hours.) Hesed house is one of only five shelters in the entire nation to offer a Comprehensive Resource Center (CRC) on its campus. This unique feature allows Hesed House to partner with dozens of local agencies to meet the basic needs of their guests and to help those guests overcome the barriers that led them into homelessness in the first place. The CRC case workers work one-to-one with our needy clients along with an instructor from Waubonsee College who teaches an employment skills class. Additional services available are addiction counseling, homeless prevention programs, aid in finding permanent housing, and Veterans assistance as 11% of Hesed house guests are veterans. Dental and vision assistance, outreach medical and health centers and private children s counseling are significant services provided by Hesed House along with legal assistance from lawyers of the Northern Illinois University School of Law and the Prairie State Legal services. Hesed House partners with local school districts and other area business groups who want to help their community. Hesed House facilities include after school programs, a computer lab, a bicycle repair shop, a fitness center and much more to encourage its clients to meet their current challenges. The mission of Hesed House if to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and create an atmosphere of Hope for its needy clients. Hesed House is proud that it has over 6,000 volunteers from over 90 different organizations helping to further that mission. Tours are available, volunteers are welcome, and further information may be obtained at We extend a sincere thank you to the Ss. Peter and Paul parishioners for your past and continuing support in helping to end homelessness in the Fox Valley area. -- Submitted by: Mr. Tom Zimmerman, Asst. Development Director, Hesed House ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In the Gospel today Jesus moved with pity touched the leper and healed him. Let us pray today for the grace to be generous with our gifts to help those who are suffering. By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you indeed put your faith into action as you bring healing to the poor, hungry and weeping. Please continue to help us by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. ELIZABETH MINISTRY As Mary went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with a child to help and comfort her, so does our Elizabeth Ministry for all those who are in need. If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is.
