SEE YOU SOON! Who Am I to Judge? by Dr. Edward Sri Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience, renowned author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 keys to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the dictatorship of relativism. He also clarifies the proper understanding of what it means to judge, and the importance of making good judgments. This talk not only helped me understand what relativism is, but more importantly it gave me simple, practical ways to defend against it. Rowena - NSW, Australia Dr. Sri defuses relativism with love. The best talk on the subject to date! John - Denver, CO This is the first time I've listened to a talk that addressed an issue that allows you to talk about the truth with someone that you disagree with, but it doesn't mean that you don't love them. 10 July 9, 2017 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 10 Matthew s Gospel Corner Following Jesus Missionary Discourse to His Apostles (Mt 10), Jesus speaks of the rejection of John the Baptist and Himself by the Jewish leaders (Mt 11:7-19) and then by those who had witnessed His many miracles (Mt 11:2-24). These rejections are followed by His acceptance by little ones (Mt 11:25-30). These three accounts form a triad, a literary devise used by Matthew where he groups or combines three titles, phrases, parables, or narratives for the purpose of instruction or added emphasis. Triads were used as a catechetical tool facilitating memorization of certain passages. The use of triads is one of the most prominent literary features of Matthew s Gospel and, like the five Discourse Narratives, helps form the structure or framework around it. By grouping these three accounts together (something unique to Matthew), the magnitude of Jesus rejection by some and His acceptance by others is underscored. It allows the reader to glance into the hearts and minds of those who encounter Jesus in the Gospel and to assess what prompted some to reject Him and others to lay down their lives for Him. Before delving into the specifics of today s Gospel, let us further address Matthew s use of this literary device, as it will enable us to better comprehend the depth of his message. One need look no further than the first verse of the Gospel to see Matthew s first use of a triad: Jesus the Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. These three titles are then followed by a genealogy structured in three groups around these three figures. The genealogy is followed by three narratives describing Jesus conception (1:18-25), birth (2:1-12), and return to Nazareth (2:13-23). Chapter 3 consists of three stories where the persons and roles of John the Baptist and Jesus are compared and contrasted. Most famously, the Sermon on the Mount of Olives (Mt 5) consists of triads within triads, each crafted to highlight the irony and the significance of the message Jesus instruction about anger is one such example. Following the command given to Moses, You shall not kill, Jesus lays out three injunctions, expanding the meaning of the Mosaic command. Each of these injunctions also consists of three parts: 1. But I say to you, a) whoever is angry * with his brother will be liable to judgment, and b) whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and c) whoever says, You fool, will be liable to fiery Gehenna. 2. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, a) leave your gift there at the altar, b) go first and be reconciled with your brother, and c) then come and offer your gift. 3. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise a) your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and b) the judge will hand you over to the guard, and c) you will be thrown into prison. The injunction in Mt 6:1, Beware of performing righteous deeds in order that people may see them, lest you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father, is immediately followed by three stories about almsgiving, prayer, and fasting which illuminate the lesson. By looking for and paying attention to these triads, we can better understand the meaning of a specific passage or verse by seeing it or contrasting it within its fuller context. In today s Gospel, Matthew reveals that it was to little ones that the mysteries of God are revealed and embraced. While the term little ones might be interpreted literally, in view of the passages that precede and follow it, little ones more appropriately refers to the humble, the meek, and to those who seek God as mentioned in The Beatitudes in Matthew 5. It is to those who are willing to listen and who are open to a change of mind and heart that the mysteries of God are revealed and accepted. Matthew contrasts these little ones with those in the Gospel who refuse to consider or accept the word and deeds of Jesus. Jesus does not condemn those struggling to come to terms with who He is (see Mark 12:28-34), but rather, He reprimands those whose hardness of heart, smugness, pride, and self-reliance stifles every prompting of grace. Matthew recounts these three stories because his readers have a choice. We can live as if there is nothing beyond the realities before us, or we can look beyond the surface and ask ourselves what is the purpose of life. Are we created in the image of God and are we called to share in His divine life? Yes, there is suffering and strife in the world, human lapses that undermine the work of the Church, and injustices that beg the question of whether there is a loving God, but are we open to discovering, searching, and pondering God s revelation of Himself through Jesus, the Christ, who calls out to the weary and burdened, offering them rest? In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that those who hear and perceive the mysteries of the Kingdom of God are those who seek truth rather than those who are so convinced of their own opinions, conclusions, and selfsufficiency. Let us therefore pray for conversion of mind and heart; let us embrace the God of Life that we might come to know and love the Triune God and share the treasure we have found with others. 1 Wesley G.
