3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is with profound sadness that we have received additional knowledge of harm and misdeeds conducted by those who were in positions of trust and authority within the Church. This week the Pennsylvania Grand Jury released a report which details allegations of child abuse over a period of 70 years. The numbers are staggering. Words cannot adequately express the level of anger, pain and humiliation felt by people of faith, including myself. I am genuinely sorry for the wounds inflicted upon precious children. I know that for many victims the wounds will never fully heal and for others the scars will remain a constant reminder of the pain endured. The violation of trust experienced by all is deep. It is alarming to realize the extent to which some of my brother bishops and priests have failed to uphold their obligations to care for the people. This is particularly disheartening for those of the clergy and laity who have faithfully served our Lord and yet find themselves with the burden of this weighty stigma. To all who have been touched by these tragedies, I am truly sorry. There is no place in the Church for those who cause harm to children or participate in covering up egregious abuse. The protection of children and vulnerable adults is a critical component of the ministries in the Diocese of Joliet. Prior to the adoption of the national Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, the diocese had begun to address this issue of sexual abuse with implementation of a Misconduct Policy in By 1993 a committee, which would later be known as the Review Board, had been established. The policies and procedures developed by this board have evolved significantly over the years and will continually be evaluated and revised. Today, the Joliet Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection is tasked with implementing the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and all related policies. This includes screening all clerics, seminarians, employees and volunteers who work with children, educating children on ways to stay safe and how to seek help when needed, training adults about the warning signs of abuse, and the appropriate actions to take if they suspect a child is at risk. The diocese has specific procedures in place for receiving allegations, immediately reporting allegations to appropriate civil authorities, and assisting victims with access to support services. Men seeking acceptance to the seminary or diaconate formation program must participate in an extensive process. This includes psychological testing and interviews with respective committees. Throughout their training the candidates are constantly evaluated in regard to their behavior, self-awareness, social interactions, disposition and overall character. Every effort is made to ensure that only those who are suitable for ministry are ordained. The Church must work diligently to regain the trust that has been lost. To promote transparency the diocese participates in annual audits conducted by third parties. These audits assess the level of compliance to Church and governmental requirements. Indeed, this week the Diocese of Joliet participated in and passed an audit conducted by the FBI to review the application and management of criminal background checks. The diocese first published a list of diocesan priests with credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors over a decade ago. It can be found on our website. I pledge to you that anyone with a credible allegation will not be returned to ministry. Evil is present in our society. I ask each of you to join me in efforts to rid the earth of this scourge and to protect the most vulnerable among us. I ask that you work with me to heal these wounds which have violated our trust and challenged our faith. I ask you to pray with me that we will all come to know and live the true message of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon To make a report of child abuse, first contact civil authorities (local police and/or Illinois Department of Child and Family Services ABUSE). Then, if the allegation involves a priest or other agent of the Church, contact the Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator at Saints Peter and Paul Church August 26, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 3

Over the years, school families have dealt with job loss, catastrophic illnesses, dissolution of their marriage, or even the death of a parent. Those life-changing experiences are compounded further if children have to transfer from our school due to the inability of the family to pay tuition. This year, Fr. Baker has received requests for $125,000 in financial aid. This impacts approximately 50 students. Since 1989, our Golf Outing has raised $1.5 million to help meet this need. The need is so great, however, that we are in need of Golf Angels to assist our efforts. Perhaps you can join us for golf at Cress Creek on Thursday, September 13th. Maybe you have tickets to a sporting event which you could donate. Or maybe you want to help this cause by making a tax-deductible donation. Whatever you can do to support this event will be greatly appreciated. Please go to our school website, and click on the 30th Annual Golf Logo image to register as a player, sponsor, or auction donor. 11 Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disability Drive God's Plan for Love by Archbishop Aquila In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the encyclical Humanae Vitae, Archbishop Aquila explains how Blessed Pope Paul VI s teaching still serves as a great light amidst a world that is deeply confused about sexual intimacy. He provides valuable insights about how God imbued our sexuality with truths that are reflective of his own divine love. He challenges Catholics to share the liberating truth of God s plan for sex within marriage and witness this reality as the way of lasting happiness. I was always told that we never use contraception because the Pope said so. After listening to this talk, I see that it s not just a rule, but a way to love deeper. Brittany - New York, NY Archbishop Aquila did an amazing job of connecting real life and the importance of following God s plan; especially considering the moral chaos that we live in today. Cody - Branson, MO Saints Peter and Paul Naperville Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disability Drive (tootsie roll drive) is fast approaching! It will be held over two weekends in September (8-9 &14-16). The funds raised will be distributed to local organizations that support individuals and their families. 12 Saint Vincent de Paul My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Thomas Merton Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 13 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel from John 6:60-69 concludes the Bread of Life Discourse that began as Jesus fed ive thousand with a few barley loaves and ish in John 6:1-15. Later in verses 35-50, He announced to the crowd that He is the Bread of Life, sent by the Father as the fullest revelation of God s love to redeem all those who believe in Him. In last Sunday s Gospel (Jn 6:51-58), Jesus revealed that His lesh is real food and His blood is real drink. At this, the disciples murmured at His words: How can this one claim to have been sent by the Father and to give us His lesh to eat? Jesus words seem both fanatical and offensive. Jesus question, Does this shake your faith? seems like an understatement. His command to eat His lesh and drink His blood was not merely hard to comprehend, it seemed incredulous. Recognizing the leap of faith required, Jesus says, What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is as if Jesus was saying, Believe in me. After I have been raised from the dead and ascend to my Father, the Spirit that I will send you will enable you to believe what now seems beyond your ability. At this point in the Gospel, many of His disciples leave Him, refusing to believe. Jesus then turns to the Twelve and asks, Will you also leave? Peter, the spokesperson for the Twelve, responds, Lord, to whom shall we go? It is you who have the words of eternal life; we have come to know and to believe that you are God s Holy One. Hearing Jesus, for some, has led to disbelief at least for now; whereas, for others, hearing Him has led to a wondrous proclamation of faith. There are some among us who hear the word of God and at least for now, do not believe. For these we must pray to the Holy Spirit to enlighten their faith and remove every obstacle to belief. There are others among us who may still wonder, still question how, but who share Peter s sentiment, Lord, to whom shall we go? You alone have the words of eternal life. Like Peter, we have come to know and believe that Jesus is the Holy One of God. This knowledge, this conviction, is as irm as life itself and is what has led some of the saints to even martyrdom. In verse 63 Jesus says, It is the Spirit that gives life; the lesh is useless. The words I have spoken to you are both Spirit and life. This passage has led some to claim that Jesus was only speaking iguratively about eating His lesh and drinking His blood. Today most serious biblical scholars, both Catholic and mainstream Protestant alike, accept that when Jesus is speaking here about the uselessness of the lesh, He not speaking of His own lesh as referenced in verses 51-58; but about man s inability, left to himself, to do anything worthy of salvation. Faith is a gift, a gift that we have to accept and live out, but it is God who redeems us. No one would suggest that when Jesus is speaking of eating His lesh that His lesh is useless, for it was His lesh and blood, sacri iced on the Cross, which has won for us our salvation. Verse 63 actually refers to verse 65: No one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father. 1 In the Gospel we hear that many of His disciples walked away because they took His words literally when He said, Unless you eat my lesh and drink my blood, you shall not have life within you. If Jesus came that all might be saved, why did He not stop these disciples who were walking away and correct their misunderstanding if He meant it only iguratively? Why would Jesus allow disciples to abandon their faith because they failed to understand He only meant it symbolically? 2 Our post-resurrection faith tells us that Jesus allowed them to walk away precisely because He meant what He said that He wished to truly leave us Himself whole and entire, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist to nourish and strengthen us on our journey to Him for eternity. St. John Vianney tells us that in the Eucharist, Jesus gave us a gift we could not have even imagined or dared to ask for, He gave us Himself. 3 1 R Brown, The Gospel According to John, The Anchor Bible, pp Beginning Apologetics, Jim Burnham and Steve Wood, pp St John Vianney, The Little Catechism of The Cure of Ars, p. 43 For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church August 26, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 13
