The enrollment and set up process is straightforward. Just visit the parish website main page ( and select online giving. When using a plain white or temporary envelope (like the one pictured below), please remember to include your envelope number on either your check or somewhere on the envelope. This will help us give you proper credit for your donation. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms ~ Ephesians 6:12 We need your help! Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, June 15th. We have volunteers in one-hour shifts from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abortion clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abortion-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abortion clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc. but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passerby. Offer prayers for the abortion-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. For more information or to let her know you are available, please call Jane Fonner at or janecfonner@comcast.net. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abortion. CRS Rice Bowl Update Thank you SSPP Parishioners! This year once again our CRS Rice Bowl drive was a parishwide Lenten event. With the help from the folks in the Religious Education office, as well as our school principal and teachers, the parish office staff, and the many volunteers that either passed out the bowls or helped collect the bowls, we are pleased to announce that we have collected $5, Thank you one and all! We are forwarding the funds so they may be put to use by Catholic Relief Services. Thank you all for your generosity! Prayer to St. Barnabas O God, who decreed that St. Barnabas, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, should be set apart to convert the nations, grant that the Gospel of Christ, which he strenuously preached, may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed. Through Our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

7 Faith by Dr. Peter Kreeft How do we understand our Catholic Faith? This presentation explains the relationship between faith and reason, faith and authority, and faith and the Church. Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Holy Scripture, this is taken from the Luke E. Hart Series: Basic Elements of the Catholic Faith and is provided by the Knights of Columbus Catholic Information Service. Serious questions can be answered based on the facts presented here with proof text from the bible and the Catechism. Mark - La Crosse, WI Well organized presentation. I enjoyed his clear and easy to grasp presentation. Rev. Jeremy IA I enjoyed hearing him quote from the bible and compare the present with the bible times. He is very interesting to listen to. The talk was full of wisdom. 8 Saint Vincent de Paul A specific spirituality underpins our Vincentian vocation: Vincentian spirituality, so named for our patron St. Vincent de Paul. For Vincentians, the key aspect of St. Vincent s spirituality are: To love God, our Father, with the sweat of our brow and the strength of our arms; To see Christ in the poor and the poor in Christ; To share the compassionate and liberating love of Christ the Evangeliser and Servant of the Poor; To heed the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This spirituality gives life, color, and meaning to who we are and what we do. Vincentian spirituality is the foundation of our vocation, endowing it with credibility, veracity, and integrity. God s grace strengthens, supports, and energizes the practice of this specific spirituality. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: News from the Knights Knights of Columbus Council No E. The Naperville Knights of Columbus meets there on the first Tuesday every month. Contact Al Knoeck at for more information. Our aluminum can collection has been a great success. It has provided us the funding we need to support our priests and seminarians. Please continue to drop off your aluminum cans next to the trailer behind the Kaycee Club Hall. Transitional Housing Ministry School is out and summer is here! Please consider a contribution to the SSPP Transitional Housing Ministry. The hard-working moms in our program face extra expenses as they make arrangements for summer programs and activities for their children. Every donation is a blessing. Thank you for your continued donations to Loaves and Fishes. Please make sure that when dropping off your non-perishable food items to the Church, you leave your bags by the railing in front of the Altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thank you. 9 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel from Mark 3:20-35 begins with the accusation by Jesus kinsfolk that He is a fanatic; He is insane. He is taking religious observance to an extreme and is an embarrassment, a source of trouble. Who are these kinfolk? In the Greek they can be translated as relatives, friends, or anyone who may have been close to Him, including neighbors and those who knew Him in Nazareth. There is a sense in Greek that insanity may be equivalent to being possessed. This led to the harsher accusation from the Pharisees that the work of Jesus was not the work of God but of the devil. Already in Mark s Gospel we see opposition to Jesus, which intensifies, culminating in His crucifixion and death. Jesus acknowledges that the work that He performs is directed at the destruction of Satan s kingdom but that the devil is too smart and cunning to undermine his own rule. The power that will bring about the collapse of evil and the powers of hell is not of the devil, but of God. 1 The Gospel lends itself to a few lessons. Anyone who strives to take their faith seriously will be accused of being a fanatic, as exorbitant, as irrational, and perhaps even an embarrassment to those close to them. Speaking out against evil will put us at odds with family, friends, and fellow employees. Paul s letters enjoin us to when possible, live peaceably with others, but this does not mean that we embrace the ways of the world or remain silent when something should be said. It is noteworthy too that Jesus does not respond in anger when treated unjustly by those closest to Him. Anger is only just when we observe or are aware of injustices committed toward others. It is only then that by word and action we are bound by charity to respond. In contrast, too often our anger is in response to some affront that we experience, some contradiction, or when our will is not followed. We may even try to justify our anger, arguing that our behavior is the fault of others They should not provoke me as they know I am hot tempered. Our anger may be expressed in moodiness, in outbursts, in cursing others and even God, or by ignoring those who offended us. We may even become angry and despair that God even created us. Giving into our anger makes life hellish for ourselves and those around us. 2 St. John Vianney tells that we should instead use these irritations, these contradictions, by uniting them to Christ on the cross whereby they become redemptive for ourselves and others. He reminds us that just as our children imitate our virtues, they imitate our vices. 3 Jesus ends by speaking about an unforgivable sin. What does this mean? Are not all sins forgivable? The unforgiveable sin is to ascribe Jesus works to the power of one other than God s Holy Spirit manifest in Jesus victory over the demons. 4 Spurning the saving power of God and rejecting His mercy until death is to accurse oneself. Let us pray that we might gain power over our passions, particularly anger and envy. Let us pray for the virtue of patience, forbearance, and thankfulness for what we have received and for the gifts God showers on others. Let us live peaceably with everyone. 1 Joel Marcus, Mark 1-8, Anchor Bible, pp Sermons of the Cure of Ars, Anger does not travel alone, Tan Books, pp Ibid. 4 Marcus, pp For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com
