3 A Message from our Pastor... This is a reprint of A Message from our Pastor originally published in the September 16th bulletin. Please note the boldface change in practice, as indicated in the message below. Dear Saints Peter and Paul Parish Family: As many of you are aware, for the past thirteen years, I served the parish community of the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet, the Mother Church of the Diocese of Joliet. When Bishop R. Daniel Conlon became the Bishop of Joliet, he promptly informed me that the liturgy at the Cathedral needed to be the liturgical model for the rest of the Diocese. We should therefore not be doing anything liturgically at the Cathedral that could not be practiced at all of the parishes of our Diocese. When I arrived at Saints Peter and Paul in June, I discovered that there were some elements of liturgical practice at our parish that were not in conformity with the liturgical practices of the Church. Therefore, we have introduced some minor modifications to our liturgy at Saints Peter and Paul. At our Sunday Masses (Saturday evening and Sunday), we will sing the entrance hymn without the entrance antiphon following the entrance hymn. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the congregation should participate in unity in either the entrance hymn or the entrance antiphon, but not both. However, at daily Masses, and at the 6:30am Mass on Sundays, the entrance antiphon will continue to be recited, because that is the practice when music is absent. The liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council sought to instill in the faithful a proper sense of the liturgy. The reforms were an effort to restore active participation to the laity, by emphasizing the liturgical prayers and actions that are proper to the laity, and to remove elements from the Mass which were devotional, rather than liturgical (part of the Mass proper). Among the non-liturgical elements that were removed following Vatican II was the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. In his Angelus message given in St. Peter's Square on April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II requested the faithful to take up the praying of the Prayer to St. Michael in the battle of our times "against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world." But even the Holy Father offered this: "Although today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it, and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world." Of course, the Prayer to St. Michael can still be offered by individuals and prayer groups. And in light of the liturgical norms, it is still appropriate for the congregation to recite the prayer, either prior to the start of the liturgy, or once the celebrant recesses from the liturgy, as the Mass is ended. This is similar to the Holy Rosary commonly prayed immediately before Mass by members of the faithful, yet not incorporated into the beginning of Mass. So what will this look like for our congregation at Saints Peter and Paul? At daily Mass, the congregation can still pray the Prayer to St. Michael and the Hail Mary after the presiding priest reverences the Altar and begins to recess out from Mass. At our Sunday Masses (including Saturday evening), the Prayer to St. Michael and the Hail Mary will now be prayed by the congregation following the lector's announcements; immediately before the entrance hymn. I ask for your cooperation and support in reference to these two minor modifications in our liturgical practices at Saints Peter and Paul. I believe it is important to make these changes so that our celebration of liturgy may seem familiar to all who may worship with us, especially those who may be visiting our Saints Peter and Paul community for the first time. Every time I celebrate the Eucharist, I believe there is likely someone present in the pews who is giving the Church one last chance, and someone present who has joined us following a long absence from the practice of their Catholic faith. I believe we need to do all we can to make our community and liturgy welcoming to those who may be worshipping with us. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. In the Peace of Christ, Fr. Crest Hill, Illinois September 17, 2018 FURTHER WORDS FROM BISHOP CONLON REGARDING THE CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL I am aware that the child abuse scandal con nues, understandably, to upset people. There are some signs of hope. The recent mee ng of officers of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with the Pope, and his calling for a general mee ng of the presidents of all the bishops conferences to deal with the issue indicate a high level of concern. People are looking for accountability. Some mes it is hard to provide accountability for events that occurred years ago. The Illinois A orney Generals recently announced inquiry into diocesan records, with which we have agreed to assist, may help. Meanwhile, we need to keep focused on our highest priori es of trying to bring healing to those who have been hurt and preven ng future abuse. As the chief shepherd of the Diocese of Joliet I am firmly commi ed to the Charter for the Protec on of Children and Young People and its Essen al Norms, most especially the repor ng of all allega ons of child sexual abuse to the proper civil authori es, along with the observance of other per nent state laws, and the removal of all perpetrators from ministry. Some mes people have their own expecta ons, but we have to work with objec ve standards. I admit that I am discouraged that we are at this sad moment in our history. I worry about those who have been abused and those whose faith has been shaken. I rely on the Lord, through prayer, to help me and to heal our Church. I invite you to do the same. Most Reverend R. 7 Guest speaker, Kelsey Tainsh, gave an inspirational talk to our students about overcoming the physical challenges she faces each day. As a result of surgery on a brain tumor, Ms. Tainsh suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed on her right side. 12 Saint Vincent de Paul St. Vincent tells us that humility is a grace of our Lord Jesus. Humility only comes when the light of Jesus penetrates deeply into our being and into all our thinking and reflection. When that light does penetrate into us, it transfigures everything, not only our opinion about ourselves but our attitude towards others. With humility, God will be glorified, the poor will be served and made happy, and we ourselves will enjoy the grace and peace of Jesus Christ, who is gentle and humble of heart. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p.586) For St. Vincent, simplicity consisted in referring things to God alone, or purity of intention. In this sense, simplicity is doing everything for love of God and for no other end. It entails avoiding human respect, or doing things merely to look good in the eyes of others. Simplicity is speaking the truth. It is saying things as they are, without concealing or hiding anything. The heart must not think one thing while the mouth says another. Vincentians must avoid all duplicity, dissimulation, cunning, and double meaning. 13 Mark s Gospel Corner In today s Gospel from Mark 9:30-37, Jesus foretells for the second time that the Son of Man will be turned over to the hands of men, to be killed. Isaiah 53:6 forms the background for this prophecy where the Suffering Servant will be handed over to his enemies. The Book of Daniel also spoke of how the holy ones of the Most High with one like a son of man would be turned over to the hands of their enemies at the end time. The same phrase was used numerous times in the Old Testament when Jerusalem was handed over to its enemies by an angry God because of Israel s unfaithfulness to the covenant: I have set my face against this city, for evil and not for good. It shall be given into the power of the king of Babylon who shall set it on ire (Jer. 21:10). The prophet Ezekiel also used this phrase to describe what God would do to Israel, as required by the covenant, for those who had been unfaithful: I will hand them over as spoils to foreigners, as plunder to the wicked of the earth, so that they may de ile them (Ez 7:21). Look what happened instead. Although God punished the Israelites, He did not abandon them to death for their unfaithfulness; rather, He handed over His only begotten Son in their stead. Jesus tells His apostles that it is necessary that He go up to Jerusalem. He became one of us so that as one of us, He could pay the price for our unfaithfulness to God. Through the incarnation of Jesus, God the Father ful illed the old covenant requirement by lipping it on its head so that God Himself could stand in the place of sinners. God s justice is ful illed by His mercy. How do the apostles respond? But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him. Mark contrasts the mercy of God with the obstinacy and dullness of the apostles. Their failure to understand is tied to their unwillingness to accept that they are called to follow in Jesus footsteps to the cross. Their negligence in not asking Jesus to explain is tied to their wish to remain ignorant don t teach me the truth, Lord, I d rather hide behind my ignorance! 1 As with the irst and third passion predictions, the second prediction is followed by an illustration of what the cross means in the life of a Christian. On the way to Capernaum, the disciples are discussing among themselves which of them is the greatest. When Jesus asks them what they are discussing, they are instantly silenced. Jesus does not rebuke them for the desire for greatness, for we are called to greatness; rather, He corrects their misguided understanding of how greatness is achieved. Jesus says that those who wish to become great must become the least. Those who wish to be irst among you must become the servants of others. In contrast to the disciples arguing over who is the greatest, Jesus instructs them in the very house that Peter s mother-in-law, cured of her fever, rose up and served their needs (Mk 1:31), inferring that it is the mother-in-law who is more perfectly modeling what it is to be a true disciple. Jesus rede ines greatness and instructs us that it is the servant, the slave of all, who is greatest in the Kingdom of God. Jesus shows us in His death that the path to greatness, glory, and resurrection is through humble self-sacri ice in the service of others, especially the least among us. He embraces the little child not simply to tell us that we must become childlike, but to tell us that as Christians we are called to serve in very concrete ways the most vulnerable in society. Jesus action in lifting up and embracing the child mirrors the ceremony of adoption in the ancient world. Mark recounts this scene for the early Christian Church because of a particular need in their society, outside the Church and within. Speci ically, He tells them that they must take in the abandoned infant found in an alley (as abandonment was widely practiced in the pagan world) or the orphaned child of a fellow Christian. In a like manner, we are called to take in those in our society who are most in need.
