10 Saint Vincent de Paul St. Vincent was a great inspiration to Frederic Ozanam in his life, work and writings. For Vincent, however, and for Frederic, it was the charity of Christ which pressed them on to do what they did for the poor of their time. It is a mystery how God could love mankind, disfigured by sin and infidelity. Likewise, it is a mystery of God that the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, are able to love people who are disfigured by the effects of poverty and injustice, and who are often so unattractive in their poverty. As we work for and visit the poor, we take heart from the thought that we are reflecting into this dark world the light and the love of God. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Four elements in today s Gospel from Matthew 28:16-20 (the commissioning of the Apostles by Jesus) parallel those found in the Book of Joshua when Moses commissions Joshua to lead God s people into the promised land: 1) both take place on a mountaintop just prior to Moses and Jesus departure from this world; 2) both Joshua and the Apostles are commissioned to go forth Joshua into the promised land and the Apostles to all the nations; 3) both are told to observe all that God has commanded them; and, 4) both are promised God s abiding presence. By modeling the commissioning of the Apostles after the commissioning of Joshua by Moses, Matthew makes clear to his Jewish Christian community that Jesus, the New Moses, has established a new and lasting covenant between God and His people and that the Apostles, like Joshua, are called to lead God s chosen people into this Promised Land. Similarly, the promise of God s abiding presence with Joshua foreshadows God s abiding presence with the Apostles and the Church Christ established through the gift of the Holy Spirit. 1 Those who rejected Jesus and crucified Him have not destroyed Him. He is raised up and is victorious! All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. He is Lord of Lords. He has destroyed death and the consequences of sin. He then enjoins His disciples, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And, behold, I am with you always, until the end of the world. This baptismal formula and promise to remain with us as preserved in Matthew s Gospel are as old as the Church itself. Catholic and mainstream Protestant Scripture scholars attest to the authenticity of Jesus words. Baptism is the efficacious sign established by Christ that cleanses us from sin and incorporates us into the One Body of Christ, the Church, as evidenced throughout the Acts of the Apostles. And, as members of His body, we are heirs to the Kingdom. Christ bids us to go out and invite others into His Kingdom. Pope Francis bids us to open wide the doors of the Church not only so that those who wish to enter may come in, but so that we can go out into the streets and invite all to the wedding feast of the Lamb. If we do not invite them, who will? If others cannot see the face of God through us, how shall they recognize Him? In doing so, we give adoration, thanks, and praise to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on this day, the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. 1 Davis and Allison, Matthew 19-28, International Critical Commentary, Volume III For more information about Mark s Gospel Corner, Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com Saints Peter and Paul Church May sspeterandpaul.net 11
