Trained in Church teaching, prayer, sacred Scripture, evangelization and discipleship, FOCUS missionaries encounter students in friendship where they are, inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and accompanying them as they pursue lives of virtue and excellence. Through Bible studies, outreach events, mission trips and one-on-one discipleship, missionaries inspire and build up students in the faith, sending them out to spread the good news and to live out the Great Commission: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. (Mt. 28:19) The need is great. 80% of high school students who go into college as practicing Catholics leave the faith before graduating. The Church needs to reclaim its young people. Luke Landiak with FOCUS will be speaking at all Masses this weekend to explain in greater detail the mission of FOCUS and what he will be doing this upcoming year. Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, August 17th. We have volunteers in one-hour shi s from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Offer prayers for the abor on-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. 8 Since 1989, our school has sponsored a Golf Outing to raise money for families in need of tuition assistance. While the image of Naperville affluence may lead people to think that no one in our community could lack the means for an elementary school tuition, that premise does not take into account for twists of fate. 30th Annual Saints Peter and Paul School Golf Outing Over the years families have dealt with job loss, catastrophic illnesses, dissolution of their marriage, or even the death of a parent. Those life changing experiences are compounded further if children have to transfer from our school due to the inability of the family to pay tuition. This year Fr. Baker has received requests for $125,000 in financial aid. That translates into approximately 50 students who wouldn't be receiving a Catholic school education with this assistance. Please join us on Thursday, September 13th, at the Cress Creek Country Club for an enjoyable round of golf with some of the most unique and fun challenges you've ever seen on a course. To register as either a golfer or sponsor, go to our school website: Our previous 29 outings have raised nearly $1.5 million for this worthy cause. Ful illed will help you... 9 Desires of the Heart by Sr. Bethany Madonna Sister Bethany Madonna, vocations director for the Sisters of Life, shares how God not only wants us to know him, but also to give us the desires of our heart and gifts that bring purpose, meaning, and hope. She makes it clear that receiving is the gift that we give to the Lord and that he wants to be invited into every aspect of our lives. Speaking from her own life experience, Sister Bethany shows the importance of asking in order to receive all the Lord has in mind for us. We need to hear more like this: God is our Father in a way that none of our fathers can be. He said, I will not leave you orphans. Donna - College Station, TX There are two words to describe this uplifting talk: 'joyful' and 'hope- illed'. I loved it. Theresa - Ridge, NY Such a wonderful talk! 10 Saint Vincent de Paul If St. Vincent de Paul was able to do so much for the poor of his day, it was because with his mind and heart he had come to know something of the length and breadth, the height and depth of the love of God that is in the heart of Jesus. As children of God, we must constantly be convincing ourselves in prayer of the excessive love with which God has reached out and is still reaching out to us each day and each moment of the day. If we are not convinced that God loves us as we are, even with our frailties, it will be very difficult for us to show the love of God to the poor. It is the work of humble prayer to come to know oneself as a person who is loved by God. It is the work of humble prayer to share that experience with the poor and to convince them that God cares for them. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p292) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, please call NEWS FROM THE KNIGHTS Knights of Columbus Council No E. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today's Gospel is taken from John 6: where the crowds again seek Jesus out. When they find Him, knowing His disciples left in the boat without him, ask, Rabbi, when did you get here? It is as if to ask, how did you get here; where are you from. John seems to be pointing beyond the means upon which Jesus arrived and toward His true origin. Jesus had left the crown because they were prepared to pronounce Him king. Now they refer to Him as simply a teacher. Jesus rebukes them saying you are looking for me simply because you have filled your bellies. Seek for bread that does not perish. In response, they ask Jesus for a sign to justify His rebuke. In John s Gospel, miracles are referred to as signs, because for John, the miracle is less important than the person it points too. The crowd who had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves has failed to perceive who Jesus is. They wish to pronounce Him king, but it is a political or military leader they seek. Jesus is urging them to look beyond their temporal needs, beyond their temporal desires to what will last, what is eternal. It is as if He is saying, what good is there in a political or military victory, if it does not lead you closer to the Father. Jesus tells them it was not Moses who gave you manna in the desert but the Father. It is this same Father who has sent them the living bread from heaven. Again, they remain on a physical level, Sir, give us this bread always. They are like the woman at the well in John Chapter 4 when Jesus offered her living water, Sir, give me this water so that I won t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water. Finally, Jesus tells them plainly, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. Just as Jesus has prompted His listeners to look beyond the present, to look beyond the here and now, He prompts us to get our priorities aright. Jesus is concerned with our here and now; He simply does not want us to get lost in the here and now and forget eternity. Jesus reminds us, Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life. As St. Ignatius tells us, Use the things of this life insofar as they lead you to Christ, and avoid them insofar as they take you away from Him. We are to use the things of this life in service of God and neighbor. To say it in another way, George Burns said, Love people and use things rather than love things and use people. Today s Gospel is pointing us to Christ, pointing us to eternity. It is beckoning us to ask why am I here. Why was I created? Where will I be in seventy eighty years? Am I working for the things that will last or the things that perish? Am I a slave to things or do I use things to further the good of others? Do I love things and use people? Let us pause and consider our priorities, our values, or desires and ask God to help us to Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
