3 REJOICE, HE HAS RISEN, ALLELUIA! I SAY AGAIN REJOICE FOR THE LORD HAS TRULY RISEN! We have arrived at the Easter Celebration, filled with joy and awe as we greet the Risen Lord into our minds, hearts and homes. We have made the journey through these forty days in the desert, stripping ourselves our earthly attachments, focusing on love of the Lord, and His Christ. We have followed our Lord through the Sacred Triduum, experiencing the last days leading to His passion, death, and resurrection. We sat with Him at the table where he instituted the Eucharist, and the priesthood, calling his apostles to be servants, not looking to be served but to serve on Holy Thursday. We have walked the bloody road to Calvary, and witnessed his mortified and crucified body being sealed in the tomb on Good Friday, and now come to Easter Sunday. The Day of our Lord s Resurrection, were the stone has been rolled away, and we rejoice over Christ s victory over death and sin. He has restored us; brought us back into right relationship with the Father, lost by our first parents Adam and Eve. He is the New and Eternal Covenant, a Priest forever, seated at the right hand of the Father. Since that first Easter Day, people have shared in the Good News of Christ Resurrection. They have shared the good news that Christ is the Lord of their life, and King of all hearts. Christ has a mission and the mission has a Church, and the disciples of Jesus witness to this love, for they too have met the Risen Lord in Word and Sacrament. We are all called to be witnesses, not out of duty, but out of Love. It is in recognizing the Love with which we have been loved, that drives us out of comfortable lives, to share the Good News with the our brothers and sisters in Christ. We are Gods people, and we rejoice especially at Easter, because we share in the Victory of Christ! Wishing you all a Joyous and grace filled Easter with family and friends. Let us all take this opportunity and spread the Good News! He has Risen, Alleluia! PAX, FR. DAN Saints Peter and Paul Church April 1, 2018 sspeterandpaul.net 3

11 Mark s Gospel Corner He is Risen. He is not here. He goes before you to Galilee. All four Gospels proclaim the Resurrection of Christ because it is the central tenet of our Christian faith. The actual Resurrection itself is not described it cannot be, having been a unique eschatological event, never happening before or since. What all four Gospels do describe is the continuity between Jesus of Nazareth, the Cruci ied One, and the Risen Christ it is the same person who appears to the disciples after the Resurrection in Galilee and along the shores of Lake Tiberias. All four Gospels attest that the Resurrection was not resuscitation of a corpse, as experienced by Lazareth or Jairus daughter. The Risen Christ is also not simply a spirit or ghost: Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have lesh and bones as you can see I have. And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. Christ is Risen Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. Today s Gospel can be taken from any one of the resurrection accounts in Mathew, Mark, Luke or John. We will focus on Mark 16:1-8. Mark s account differs signi icantly from all the others. In its initial draft, Mark s Gospel concluded with verse 8. The earliest and best-preserved ancient manuscripts end here. The Church Fathers saw that the word choice and style differs from the rest of the Gospel beginning in Mark 16: Why did Mark initially choose to end the Gospel after verse 8? We read that following the Sabbath, three women who witnessed Jesus death (two of whom also witnessed His burial) set out early in the morning, after sunrise, to anoint the body. Throughout the Old Testament, deliverance is associated with the morning light. King David compares his ascension to the throne to the sun rising in the early morn. The women, however, are not thinking of the Messiah, the son of David. They go simply to anoint a corpse, to show respect for the dead. 2 All that remains are memories and dashed hopes. As they proceed, their entire focus is on who will remove the massive stone placed at the entrance of the tomb. Mark wants to emphasize to us the impenetrable barrier between life and death. Humanity is simply incapable of bridging the two. 3 Suddenly the women look up and the stone is gone it is reminiscent of when Jesus looked up to heaven before healing the deaf mute and the blind man from Bethany (Mk ¹:78 and ²:68). The use of the Greek verb α ναβλε ψασαι here hints at the wonder soon to be revealed. The stone, though extremely large, has been rolled away. What was impossible for them to accomplish has been inexplicably done. Entering the tomb, the women see a young man dressed in white and they are amazed literally, they were dumbfounded. Their reaction is similar to other angelic or divine appearances in the Old and New Testament and to the reaction of the apostles after Jesus calmed the raging sea in Mark 4:41: They were illed with great fear and said to one another, Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey? The young man (or angel) is sitting on the right side of the tomb the place of favor, honor, and power in the presence of the king. St. Peter Chrysologus suggests that the man s youthfulness denotes the new era that has just dawned (Sermon 82). Like the angel Gabriel, the young man tells the women, Do not be afraid. Recognizing the purpose of their journey, he says to them: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the cruci ied. He has been raised; He is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him. He then tells them to go to Peter and the other disciples and tell them: He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you. Terri ied and bewildered, the women lee and tell no one because they were afraid. Mark s Gospel initially ends with the proclamation, He is Risen and a promise but Him they did not see. Mark ends here because the experience of the women mirrors the experience of the early Church it is the experience of each one of us. We believe that Jesus is risen and has promised that He will come again, but Him we have not seen. In Mark s Gospel we have a promise but the presence is not felt. 4 There are some among us, even some saints, who have not experienced, have not always felt Jesus presence such as St. Mother Teresa, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. John of the Cross. We may feel like the man in the Gospel s who cries out, I believe Lord, help my unbelief (Mk 9:24). Mark s Gospel attests to this kind of faith. 5 As with St. Paul, Mark s Gospel reminds us: We live by faith and not by sight (1Cor. 5:7). Mark s Gospel reminds us that faith along with the persistence of doubt is not inconsistent in our journey to God. The disciples believed, yet remained for a time incredulous, uncertain. Faith is a gift. It is a journey. While some recognize Him quickly, others come to believe gradually, incrementally, much like Nicodemus in John 3:1-21 and the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-42. What Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman had in common was their willingness to listen, to remain open and not shut down grace, to admit human limitation and their sinfulness in the face of Jesus gradual revelation. They did not turn away like those in John 6:60: His words are hard, who can believe? Rather, they cooperated with grace and did not persist in their doubt, even when Jesus words were hard to believe. They allowed their faith to steadily grow. Easter is a time to allow our faith to grow, to discover or deepen our faith in the Risen One by having an open mind and praying with our whole hearts. 1 The Council of Trent confirmed that Mark 16:9-20 is a part of the inspired Gospel of Mark. 2 Brown, Mark 8-16, The Anchor Bible, pp Lectures presented on the Passion and Resurrection, Mt.
