3 September 17, 2017 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Venezuelan Mission Fr. Gregory Schaffer will be visiting our parish September 30-October 1 and speaking at all of the Masses. Although the hurricanes have rightly dominated the news of late, the reality is that the situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate not only politically, but also the ability of people to secure basic needs. Fr. Schaffer will make an appeal to our parishioners to help support his efforts to care for the most vulnerable in Venezuela. Octoberfest On October 29 th, Saints Peter and Paul will hold its first, hopefully annual, Octoberfest. There will be great music, food and of course beer for the adults. Please join us not only in the evening for Octoberfest, but also Trunk N Treat that afternoon in the parish parking lot for children of all ages. Please watch for more details to come. Stewardship Materials Thank you for the positive response to our financial report this last weekend. 11 September 17, 2017 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Matthew s Gospel Corner Peter s question to Jesus about how often he must forgive his neighbor, followed by the parable of the unmerciful servant, provides context for Jesus previous instruction on fraternal correction. Although the spirit of forgiveness cannot mean blindness and indifference to sin, and reproof is not the antithesis of love, those who exercise fraternal correction within the Christian community must do so with unbounded forgiveness and with an acute awareness of their own sinfulness and need for forgiveness, mindful that fraternal correction s purpose is to lead the errant to repentance and restoration within the family of God. Peter s suggestion that one forgive seven times must have seemed excessive, given that common wisdom in the Israelite community dictated that one forgive his neighbor three times. Peter s suggestion and Jesus response may point back to the sevenfold punishment Cain received from God for murdering his brother and the seventy-plus-seven punishment Cain s descendent, Lamech, received: If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times (Genesis 4:24). Sevenfold would have recalled a number of Old Testament passages to those who heard Peter and Jesus exchange. Aaron sprinkled the blood of the sacrifice seven times in atonement for the sins of the people in the desert (Leviticus 16:14). The Israelites are warned that their disobedience would lead to a sevenfold chastisement and seven-times-sevenfold for their children (Leviticus 26:18). And in Proverbs, while the wicked stumble, the righteous persevere: Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes (Proverbs 24:16). Jesus command to forgive seventy times seven times clearly teaches that a Christian s willingness to forgive, in imitation of God the Father, must be unlimited. How is this possible? It is possible only through the indwelling of God within us, which is granted to those who believe. The basis for such a command is illustrated in the parable that Jesus immediately relates after giving this injunction to forgive:. A master or king decides to settle accounts with his servants the parallel between the parable and the last judgment should be clear. He first calls to account someone who has been the recipient of the master s abundant generosity. The man had been lent $10,000 talents (the largest known denomination). By comparison, the amount of taxes collected annually throughout all of Palestine would have been roughly 600 talents, and it is likely that Solomon s temple, in all its splendor, was built for a sum equal to what the servant had received. Undoubtedly, hyperbole is employed here to underscore the overwhelming generously of the king who, σπλαγχνισθεὶς, moved to compassion (a phase frequently applied to Jesus in the Gospel) forgave this man s entire debt. The key to understanding the message of the parable is the Greek word ἀποδοῦναι meaning utterly incapable, completely unable. This man owed a debt that could simply never be repaid, such that it was ludicrous to beg for more time, yet in an instant, he had the sum completely wiped away. Immediately he goes out and meets a neighbor who owed him a mere trifle, a hundred denarii, the equivalent of one day s wage. The neighbor is throttled by the neck and told to pay up. Begging that he be given a little time to do so, a reasonable request, given the small amount he owed, he is denied any mercy and is thrown into debtor s prison along with his wife and children. Shaken by what had occurred (ἐλυπήθησαν, meaning grieved, pained, angered), those who witnessed it approached the master and relayed all that had happened. The master then summoned the man he had forgiven and in anger asked, Could you not show pity on another who owed you a mere pittance, given all that I have forgiven you? Now he is held to account, not for the 10,000 talents, but for his failure to show mercy. The punishment is now worse than what was threatened before he is thrown into prison and tortured until his debt is paid. As the parable now stands, with the debt amounting to 10,000 talents, the punishment must be perpetual, for a debt so immense could never be repaid, a clear reference to the last judgment. The Gospel ends with an interpretation of the parable that no one can miss if we fail to show mercy toward those who have transgressed against us, our heavenly Father will treat us in kind. Luke 6:36 enjoin us, Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. It is in light of this parable that we should apply the lesson from last week s Gospel. While there is behavior that is incompatible within the Christian community and admonishing a sinner or at times excluding someone from communion within the Church is necessary, fraternal correction must be exercised with a recognition of all that God has forgiven us and should be motivated and carried out with mercy and compassion. Just as we have received God s mercy, we must exercise mercy. 1 W.D. Davies and D.C. Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7 Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin. Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For the salvation of the souls. 2. For protection of those who suffer from natural disasters. 3. For the repose of the soul of Tom Marnell. 4. For healing, inner peace, and happiness of a daughter. 5. For the protection of the unborn. 6. For the holy souls in purgatory. PRAYER NETWORK Sunday 11am Wednesday 4pm Saturday 7pm Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend.
