3 COMMUNICATION FROM THE BISHOP Page 3 SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR DIOCESAN PRIESTS CARE & SUPPORT Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Father s Day June 18-19, 2016, there will be a special collection to care for our infirm and retired priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several retired priests in the Diocese of Joliet. As we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy, prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and retired priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of the Father s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you. Most Reverend R. 7 Page 7 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 12 June 2016 Love and sin These two seem an odd pairing, a doubtful duo. Yet love and sin are bound together in the Bible readings today. Great love leads to forgiveness. And forgiveness leads to greater love. Look to King David who had a husband killed so he could take the wife. Look to the Apostle Paul who was drawn away from persecuting others by the love of the Son. Look to the unnamed weeping woman who bathed and anointed feet. Because of sorrow. Because of forgiveness. Because of great love. Who has forgiven me? What happened next? Who needs my forgiveness? And how does my forgiveness mirror God s forgiveness of me, of others, and of all? WEDDING HOSTESS OPEN INVITATION St. Peter and St. Paul Wedding Hostess are looking for interested parishioners to assist with wedding rehearsals and the wedding day. 9 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January June 12, 31, Page 10 9 LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER The readings today focus on the forgiveness of sin, the disposition necessary as we approach God, and the joy experienced by those whose sins are forgiven. In the first reading from Second Samuel, King David acknowledges his sinfulness and is forgiven by God, even though he will still suffer the temporal consequences of his sin. David, though blessed with abundance, had committed adultery and ordered the death of the woman s husband. Despite the gravity of David s sin, when he acknowledges his sin and honestly confesses it, he is forgiven: He shall not die. In the responsorial psalm, the psalmist reflects how physical suffering led him to confession of sin and God s forgiveness. This forgiveness is followed by a peace and internal harmony he had not previously experienced. In joy he proclaims, Blessed is the one whose fault is taken away, whose sin is imputed. In today s Gospel a certain woman, known to be a sinner, barged into a festive banquet that Jesus had been invited to attend at the home of a Pharisee. The Aramaic word used here for sinner literally means debtor, which lends itself to the parable that Jesus tells. As she stood as close to Jesus as possible, her tears fell and bathed His feet. She then loosened her hair, a shocking thing to do in that culture, and dried His feet and anointed them with oil. The woman's actions prompted the Pharisee to question whether Jesus could be the one who is to come, the great prophet like Moses, (Deut. 18:15), as a prophet would know that she is a sinner and that sinners according to the Law should be shunned, yet Jesus has not withdrawn or rebuked her. Knowing the Pharisee s thoughts, Jesus tells the story of two debtors, one owing the equivalent of 50 days wages, the other 500. Because of their inability to pay, the moneylender forgave them both their debt. The verb used by Jesus for remitting the debt is the same used when He remits the woman s sin. Jesus now addresses the Pharisee by name and asks which debtor would be more grateful for the money lender s forgiveness. Simon correctly responds, The one who was shown the greater favor. Jesus then compares how Simon had treated him upon entering his home with how the woman had. What Jesus is really contrasting is the woman s self-knowledge, disposition, and love with that of Simon. Jesus is not concerned about the external observance of the law, or the common courtesies shown a guest, but with mercy and love, which is the foundation and undercurrent of the law. While the Pharisee failed to recognize who Jesus was and did not show even the smallest sign of gratefulness for His coming, this woman had not ceased showing signs of love and appreciation for Jesus. The Pharisee still regarded her as a sinner; whereas, Jesus had forgiven her, and she was no longer burdened by her many sins. Much had been forgiven the woman; where in contrast, only a little had been forgiven of the Pharisee, not because he had sinned less, but because he lacked the disposition to humbly acknowledge his sins and seek forgiveness. His attitude is depicted in the words of Psalm 36: "He so flatters himself in his eyes that he sees not his guilt." The Pharisee thought that righteousness with God could be obtained by external observance of the Mosaic Law. St. Paul in Galatians writes that no one is capable of true and perfect observance of the law, and as such, no one can be justified through its observance. In Romans St. Paul asserts that the real purpose of the law is to make us aware of our inability to remain faithful so that we will seek justification not in ourselves (our works of the law) but in Christ, the only source of justification with God. Although Jesus did faithfully observe the law, He also accepted the punishment of death for us who have been unfaithful thereby justifying us before God. He paid our debt. The woman in today s Gospel recognized her need for God and sought forgiveness. The Pharisee thought of himself as righteous with no need for forgiveness. Consequently, she wept tears of repentance and of joy, while Simon was filled with indignation. She left having been honored by God, while Simon, a person of honor, remained chastised by God. She, despite her multitude of sins, was found more pleasing to God than the Pharisee who thought of himself as God s favored. The two-fold meaning of Jesus pronouncement, Your sins are forgiven, was clearly understood by the reaction of the crowd: "Who but God can forgive sins?" The question becomes a rhetorical one for the reader who is forced to consider and to affirm Jesus true identity and why He became man. Luke reminds us that Jesus came to reconcile sinners, not the just those who think they are righteous. Let us approach Him in humility, with confidence in His mercy and forgiveness, not letting shame or pride prevent us from confessing our sins and receiving the joy God has in store for us. In this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis urges us to go to Sacramental Confession, despite our hesitation, so that we might share in the joy that this sacrament can produce in us: "Sometimes when you're in line for confession, you feel all sorts of things, especially shame, but when your confession is over, you'll leave free, great, beautiful, forgiven, clean, happy -- this is what's beautiful about confession" (Pope Francis, CNS). 10 Page 10 BACK TO BASICS Pope Francis recently promulgated his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, or The Joy of Love, discussing marriage and family. Amoris Laetitia stands as one element within a great tradition of Catholic thought on marriage and family, and must be read in light of that tradition. Importantly, the tradition of the Church speaks of the family as the domestic church. Christ himself chose to be born and grow up in a family. The Church itself is "the family of God." From the very beginning of the spread of Christianity, the core of the Church was often made up of those who had become believers "together with all [their] household." Much like today, these families who became believers were islands of Christian life in an unbelieving world. Today, in a world often alien and even hostile to faith, believing families are of central importance as centers of living, radiant faith. For this reason the Second Vatican Council, using an ancient expression, calls the family the domestic Church. It is in the family that parents, by word and example, are the first to announce the faith to their children. The family is also where vocations are fostered, with special care to foster vocations to the priesthood or religious life. It is in the family that all members of the family exercise the priesthood of the baptized in a special way: by the reception of the sacraments, prayer and thanksgiving, the witness of a holy life, and self-denial and active self-giving love. Parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith, and only with great difficulty can this role be replaced if it is not assumed by the parents. Thus the home is the first school of Christian life. Here one learns to love, to be generous, to forgive, and above all to worship God in prayer and the offering of one's life. Leap Into FORMED On June 29, the Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter & Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. Learn more about these two saints by exploring the many resources at FORMED.org. Catholicism Session 5 The Indispensable Men - Peter, Paul and the Missionary Adventure Bishop Barron calls Peter and Paul two indispensable men, the ones without whom the church never would have emerged and survived. In telling each man s story, Bishop Barron shows how the Holy Spirit worked through all the Apostles and disciples to build the Church. Following the trail of these Apostles as they took the Gospel to the ends of the earth, Bishop Barron presents the foundations of the apostolic faith, particularly the revelation of Christ s resurrection from the dead.
